Now reading: Chapter 2216: Story 2217: The First Imperfect Choice from Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition, a Action novel by Sir Faraz.

The choice did not arrive like the pulse.

It did not echo.

It did not command.

It happened quietly—so quietly that, for a mont, Ayaan wasn’t sure it had happened at all.

But sothing changed.

He felt it in the air first. Not pressure, not weight—movent. A subtle shift, like the world taking its first uncertain step without knowing where it would land. The stillness that had held everything in place began to loosen, not breaking, but softening.

Zara noticed it too. Her fingers tightened slightly around his sleeve as she looked around, her eyes searching for the source. “Did you feel that?” she asked.

Ayaan nodded slowly. “Yeah.”

The figures in the street reacted next.

Not all at once.

Not together.

One of them—a man standing near the edge of the road—turned his head. Not sharply. Not with the eerie precision they had once moved with. This ti, the motion was hesitant, uneven, like soone rembering how to move after being still for too long.

Then he took a step.

But unlike before—

The step wasn’t perfect.

His foot dragged slightly against the ground. His balance shifted awkwardly. For a brief second, it looked like he might fall.

He didn’t.

But the imperfection remained.

Zara stared at him. “That’s... new.”

Ayaan’s gaze sharpened. “It’s not being corrected.”

Because nothing ca to fix it.

No pulse.

No alignnt.

No silent force reshaping the mont into sothing flawless.

The mistake stayed.

And the world continued anyway.

More figures began to move, each one slightly different from the last. So walked steadily. Others stumbled. A few hesitated mid-step, as if unsure whether to continue at all.

For the first ti—

They weren’t the sa.

Zara exhaled slowly, sothing shifting in her expression. “They’re choosing,” she said.

Ayaan nodded.

But sothing about that didn’t sit right.

“They’re trying to,” he corrected.

Because choice wasn’t natural to them.

Not yet.

Above, the sky rippled faintly—not in the overwhelming, consuming way it had before, but in fragnts. The presence was still there, watching, existing—but now it felt... distant. Not in space, but in influence.

It wasn’t guiding this.

It was witnessing it.

Ayaan lifted his gaze, his eyes narrowing slightly. “It’s learning again,” he said quietly.

Zara followed his gaze. “From us?”

Ayaan hesitated.

“From everything.”

The man took a slow step forward, his movents no longer smooth, no longer certain. He looked at his own hands, turning them slightly as if expecting them to behave in a way they no longer did.

“This is... unstable,” he murmured.

Zara glanced at him. “It’s real.”

He looked at her, sothing unreadable in his expression. “Reality was never ant to be this... undefined.”

Ayaan stepped forward then, his attention drawn to the ground beneath his feet. The layers were still there—but they were no longer shifting uncontrollably. Instead, they overlapped in quieter ways, subtle differences existing side by side without tearing each other apart.

A cracked road remained cracked.

A smooth one remained smooth.

Neither replaced the other.

They coexisted.

Ayaan crouched slightly, touching the surface. It felt solid. Consistent. But when he moved his hand just a fraction to the side, the texture changed—rough, broken, uneven.

He pulled his hand back slowly.

“It’s not choosing one version,” he said.

Zara frowned. “Then what is it doing?”

Ayaan stood, his voice low.

“It’s letting them all exist.”

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Because if everything could exist—

Then nothing had to make sense.

The sky flickered again, and this ti, the presence shifted more noticeably. Not forming. Not erging.

Adapting.

Its vast awareness spread across the fractured world, not controlling it, not correcting it—but observing every imperfect choice being made.

And changing because of it.

Zara stepped closer to Ayaan, her voice uncertain. “Is that good?”

Ayaan didn’t answer right away.

Because he didn’t know.

Imperfection ant freedom.

But it also ant unpredictability.

And sothing that vast—

Sothing that had once been perfect—

Learning imperfection...

Was not sothing they could understand.

A sudden sound broke the mont.

A laugh.

Soft.

Unsteady.

Human.

Both of them turned sharply.

One of the figures—a young boy—stood a few steps away, his expression confused but alive in a way none of them had been before.

He laughed again.

Not perfectly.

Not evenly.

But real.

Zara’s breath caught. “He’s...”

Ayaan nodded slowly.

“He’s becoming.”

The sky above dimd slightly, as if sothing within it had just taken notice of that single, imperfect sound.

And sowhere, deep within the shifting silence—

Sothing vast tried to imitate it.
