The fortress stood eerily silent, its halls lit only by the flickering glow of damaged overhead lights. Damien leaned heavily against a steel column, his breathing labored. Blood sared his torn jacket, but his grip on the shotgun remained firm. Beside him, Mira steadied herself, her blade stained with the dark ichor of the mutated creatures.
"We can’t keep doing this," Mira said, her voice a mixture of exhaustion and determination. "The Shadow King is too strong. This enhancer serum only bought us ti."
Damien wiped the sweat from his brow, his steel-gray eyes scanning the hallway. "We don’t need to beat him here. We just need to survive long enough to get to the core."
Mira frowned. "And blow ourselves up in the process? That’s a hell of a plan."
Before Damien could reply, a faint glow appeared at the far end of the corridor. It wasn’t the harsh red of the Shadow King or his horde—it was soft, warm, almost inviting.
"What now?" Damien muttered, raising his shotgun.
Out of the light stepped a woman, her features shrouded in mystery, but her presence radiated peace. She was cloaked in white, her eyes glowing with an ethereal brilliance. She raised her hands, palms open, as if to signal she ant no harm.
"Damien Rook," she spoke, her voice lodic yet firm. "You stand on the brink of darkness. But there is another way."
Mira stepped forward, her blade at the ready. "Another way? Like what? Singing the Shadow King a lullaby?"
The woman smiled faintly, her gaze steady. "Not everything must end in destruction. The Shadow King was once a protector of this world, corrupted by despair and greed. The core you seek to destroy can also be used to purify him."
Damien straightened, gripping his shotgun tighter. "Purify? You expect to believe that after everything he’s done—after everyone he’s killed—there’s any part of him left worth saving?"
The woman stepped closer, and Damien felt an unexplainable warmth wash over him. "What you believe does not matter. What you choose does."
Mira scoffed. "Choose? We’ve been fighting for survival, not debating philosophy."
The fortress shook violently, the Shadow King’s enraged roar echoing through the halls. The woman’s glow faltered slightly, but she stood firm.
"You have little ti," she said. "Decide now. Fight to destroy or fight to redeem."
Damien looked at Mira, then back at the woman. His jaw tightened. "If you’re lying, we’re all dead anyway."
The woman’s serene smile returned. "Faith is not without risk."

Without another word, she dissolved into the light, leaving a glowing amulet in her place. Damien picked it up, feeling a surge of energy and calmness intertwine.
Mira stared at him. "You really think this will work?"
Damien pocketed the amulet. "No. But it’s the only shot we’ve got."
They turned toward the core, the fortress trembling as the Shadow King’s approach grew closer. Together, they ran—not to destroy, but to save.
