The forest was unnervingly silent as the team regrouped. The fallen creature's body lay in a twisted heap, steam rising from its wounds as the black ichor pooled around it. Zara crouched beside the beast, her twin blades dripping with the creature's blood. Her eyes scanned its grotesque form, searching for clues.
"What kind of thing even is this?" Mia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She clutched her knife tightly, her knuckles pale.
"It's not like the usual infected," Callum muttered, reloading his rifle. "This one feels… engineered."
"Exactly," Zara said, rising to her feet. "This isn't just evolution or random mutation. Soone—or sothing—is pulling strings. And they know we're here."
Andre paced nervously. "If that's true, then this wasn't a random encounter. We're being hunted."
Zara nodded. "Which ans we need answers fast. Check the periter, see if there are tracks or anything unusual. Callum, stay on overwatch in case more are coming."
The team fanned out cautiously. Zara stayed by the beast, studying its injuries and strange anatomy. Her gut churned as she examined the jagged spines along its back and the eerie, glowing veins beneath its thick hide. Whatever this creature was, it wasn't natural.
"Zara, over here!" Andre's voice cut through the quiet.
She rose quickly and jogged toward him, blades at the ready. He was crouched near a cluster of bushes, pointing to the ground. Zara's heart sank when she saw the massive footprints leading away from the clearing—prints too large to be human.
"There's more than one," Andre said grimly.
Before Zara could reply, a faint sound reached her ears. It was distant but distinct: a low, rhythmic hum, like machinery buried deep underground.
"You hear that?" Callum's voice ca through the comms, tension clear.
"Yeah," Zara confird, her eyes narrowing. "It's coming from the northwest. Everyone, regroup. We're moving out."
The team reconvened, their nerves on edge as the hum grew louder with every step they took. The forest seed darker now, the trees closing in around them as if trying to warn them away.
After several minutes, the source of the noise ca into view. They erged into a small clearing, where a tal hatch was embedded in the ground. Rusted and weathered, it looked old, but the hum emanating from it suggested otherwise.
"An underground facility?" Mia asked, her voice barely hiding her fear.

Callum adjusted his rifle. "This feels like a trap."
"Everything does these days," Zara said, pulling out a small device from her belt. "But if we want to find answers, we don't have a choice."
She placed the device on the hatch's panel. It emitted a soft beep before the hatch creaked open, revealing a dark ladder leading into the depths below. Zara glanced at her team.
"Stay sharp. Whatever's down there, it's not friendly."
And with that, she descended into the darkness, her team following close behind.
