The corridor stretched endlessly, its walls lined with rusted pipes and flickering ergency lights. Zara tightened her grip on her pistol, her every step calculated to avoid the puddles on the concrete floor. Beside her, Rowan moved just as cautiously, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. The silence was heavy, broken only by the faint hum of machinery and the occasional distant clatter, which could easily have been the infected—or sothing worse.

"We need to figure out where this leads," Rowan said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Zara nodded, holding up the beacon she'd taken. Its blinking red light was a constant reminder of the bait they carried, though she'd managed to disable its tracking signal. For now. "If we're lucky, this path connects to the maintenance tunnels. Those should lead us back to the surface," she said.

"Lucky hasn't exactly been on our side lately," Rowan muttered, casting a wary glance behind them.

As they moved forward, Zara's mind raced. The ambush at the safe house wasn't random—it was precise, targeted. Whoever was behind it had intimate knowledge of their movents, their skills, even their weaknesses. It wasn't just the infected they were fighting anymore; soone had set the stage, pulling the strings from the shadows.

They reached an intersection where the corridor split into three paths. Zara knelt, studying the ground. A faint trail of dried blood led to the left. She pointed. "This way."

Rowan hesitated. "And if it's a trap?"

Zara smirked. "Then we spring it on our terms."

The left passage was narrower, forcing them to walk single file. The air was damp and carried the faint stench of decay. Zara's senses were on high alert, her instincts screaming that they were being watched.

They turned a corner and stopped dead in their tracks. A figure stood at the end of the hall, shrouded in dim light. It was humanoid but moved with a jerky, unnatural gait. Its head tilted at an odd angle, as though listening for them.

"Infected?" Rowan asked, raising his gun.

"Not quite," Zara replied, her eyes narrowing. She motioned for him to hold his fire.

The figure suddenly lunged, but not toward them. It darted into a side passage, its movents too deliberate to be mindless. Zara's blood ran cold. "It's not infected. It's leading us sowhere."

Rowan frowned. "A scout?"

"Possibly. Or bait." Zara's voice was steady, but her mind was racing. They were being herded.

"Do we follow?" Rowan asked, his tone implying he already knew the answer.

Zara checked her ammo and adjusted her bag. "We don't have a choice. If it knows we're here, the others won't be far behind."

They moved cautiously, following the trail left by the strange figure. Every step felt heavier, the air thicker with tension. Zara's thoughts were interrupted by the faint sound of whispers—human voices, coming from deeper within the passage. Your next read is at My Virtual Library Empire
