The tremors in the tunnel grew stronger, shaking dust and debris from the curved ceiling. Rook steadied himself against the wall, his shotgun ready, while Shadow crouched low, her blades glinting faintly in the flickering light. The distant roar reverberated through the tunnel, a guttural sound that sent chills down their spines.

"What now?" Rook muttered, his voice tight with unease.

Shadow's sharp eyes scanned the shadows ahead. "Whatever it is, it's big. We need to move—now."

They broke into a cautious jog, the narrow confines of the tunnel amplifying every step. The distant roar turned into a series of growls, low and nacing, echoing closer. The creature wasn't just behind them; it was hunting them.

Suddenly, the faint light ahead revealed a junction where the tunnel split into three paths. Shadow skidded to a halt, her mind racing. "Which way?"

Rook glanced back, his instincts screaming that they didn't have ti to debate. "Left looks clear—"

Before he could finish, the air behind them erupted with a feral snarl. A massive shadow lood, stepping into the dim light. The creature was a grotesque fusion of sinew and bone, its misshapen body rippling with muscle. Its glowing, yellow eyes locked onto them, and its maw opened to reveal rows of jagged teeth dripping with viscous saliva.

"Not clear enough!" Shadow hissed, grabbing Rook's arm.

They darted into the left tunnel as the beast charged. The sound of its claws scraping against the ground sent adrenaline surging through their veins. Shadow's blades clinked against her thigh as she ran, her grip tightening with every step.

The tunnel began to narrow, forcing them to move single file. The beast, too large to follow without effort, roared in frustration as it wedged itself into the passage. Rook risked a glance over his shoulder, only to see the creature's claws raking chunks of concrete from the walls as it forced its way through.

"It's gaining!" he shouted, skidding to a stop.

Shadow whipped around, her eyes blazing with resolve. "Keep running! I'll slow it down."

"No chance—"

"Go, Rook!" she snapped, her tone brooking no argunt.

Reluctantly, Rook sprinted ahead, leaving Shadow behind. She crouched low, her twin blades gleaming as the beast lunged. Its massive claws swiped at her, but she spun to the side, her blades slicing into its arm. Black ichor sprayed from the wound, but the creature barely flinched, its eyes burning with fury.

It lashed out again, forcing Shadow to leap back. Her blades danced in the faint light, striking at its exposed joints and vulnerable underbelly. Each cut seed to slow it slightly, but the beast was relentless, its movents driven by raw rage.

Rook, anwhile, found himself at the end of the tunnel, a rusted ladder leading upward. "Shadow! This way!" he called.

Shadow heard him but remained locked in combat. She landed one final strike, a deep slash across the beast's face, before spinning on her heel and bolting toward the ladder.

The creature roared, its bloodied face twisted in rage as it barreled after her.

"Climb!" Rook shouted, his shotgun aid downward.

Shadow leaped onto the ladder, and Rook fired, the blast echoing through the tunnel. The shot struck the creature's chest, montarily halting its charge.

As Shadow climbed past him, Rook reloaded, preparing for another shot. "Co on, ugly," he growled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

The battle wasn't over—not by a long shot. Enjoy new adventures from My Virtual Library Empire
