The once-glorious city stretched out before them, now a vision of devastation. Marble columns crumbled under the weight of the inferno raging around them. Smoke billowed into the sky, staining the sunset with a dark orange haze. The ground was littered with debris and glowing embers, the air heavy with the stench of burning wood and stone.
The team stood at the edge of the destruction, weapons at the ready.
"This doesn't look like just a random attack," Shadow observed, her voice tight as her eyes scanned the fiery ruins. "This was ant to send a ssage."
Rook knelt, running his fingers over the blackened dirt. The heat radiated even through his gloves. "And that ssage is loud and clear: Stay away."
Ghost, ever the quiet observer, was already moving ahead, his silhouette blending with the smoke. "We've got movent," he said over the comms.
Rook motioned for the team to spread out. "Stay sharp. Whatever's waiting for us isn't going to make this easy."
The team advanced cautiously, weaving through the burning wreckage. The city wasn't entirely abandoned; shadowy figures darted between the ruins, their intentions unclear. As they moved deeper into the heart of the destruction, the sound of gunfire erupted from an alleyway to their left.
"Contact!" Bulwark roared, taking cover behind a fallen column.
The team sprang into action. Shadow found a perch on a crumbled archway, her sniper rifle trained on the attackers. With practiced precision, she picked off two enemies attempting to flank them. Ghost slipped through the chaos, his silenced pistol taking out stragglers before they could raise the alarm.
Rook and Viper moved as a unit, pushing forward into the alley. The resistance was organized, their attackers well-equipped and determined to hold their ground. Viper's blades flashed as she neutralized an enemy at close range, while Rook's assault rifle cut through the rest.
When the last of the enemies fell, the team regrouped.
"They're protecting sothing," Rook said, catching his breath. He gestured to a large building at the center of the ruins, its roof partially caved in but still standing. "Whatever it is, it's in there."
As they approached the building, the heat beca nearly unbearable. Flas licked at the doorway, but Bulwark forced his way through, clearing the path for the others. Inside, the air was thick with smoke, but it was clear this had been a central hub—a library or an archive. Charred bookshelves lined the walls, and in the center of the room stood a single, untouched pedestal.
On it rested a tallic briefcase.
Rook moved to grab it, but Ghost stopped him. "Tripwires," he said, pointing to the faint glint of a laser.
With careful precision, Ghost disard the trap and secured the case. Rook opened it to reveal a set of maps, each marked with red circles.
"It's a network," Shadow realized, peering over his shoulder.
"A network of what?" Viper asked.
"Targets," Rook replied grimly. "And we're next."
The sound of approaching footsteps cut their discussion short. Reinforcents were on the way.
"Ti to move," Rook ordered.
The team vanished into the burning city, the briefcase in tow, as the battle for survival intensified.
