The ZETU squad stood on the edge of the scorched village. The charred remains of the Juggernaut smoldered behind them, casting ominous shadows in the faint moonlight. Though the survivors were safe, the eerie silence that followed felt unnatural, almost oppressive.
"Captain," Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett said from her perch on a ruined rooftop, "movent at the far end of the village. Looks like more walkers... no, wait. They're running. Fast."
"Runners," Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart spat. "Because things weren't bad enough."
Captain Marcus Kane raised his shotgun. "We've seen this pattern before—these villages don't fall to ordinary walkers. There's sothing driving them."
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor monitored his drone feed, his face illuminated by the flickering screen. "The runners are converging near the central barn. Heat signatures inside—more survivors, or… sothing worse."
"Then we move. Sa formation," Kane commanded. "Quick Shot, provide overwatch. Blaze, keep your fire controlled—we can't risk setting this whole place ablaze. Shield, Huntress, you're with . Brain, keep us updated."
The team moved through the rubble-strewn streets, their boots crunching on charred debris. The air was thick with the stench of decay and smoke, making every breath a challenge.
As they approached the barn, they saw the runners—grotesque, emaciated creatures that once resembled humans but now moved with horrifying speed. Their glowing, soulless eyes fixed on the team as they let out guttural screeches.
"Open fire!" Kane yelled.
Riley's sniper rifle cracked, dropping the lead runner. Jenna sprayed short bursts of fla to hold back the rest, while Derek "Shield" Coleman braced himself, smashing his riot shield into any that ca too close.
"Captain, the barn's barricaded from the inside," Lila "Huntress" Navarro called out, scanning the entrance with her pistols drawn. "Whoever's in there doesn't want company."
"No ti to argue," Kane said, slamming the butt of his shotgun into the heavy door. "Shield, break it down!"
Derek charged, his reinforced shield splintering the door with a thunderous crack. The team flooded inside, weapons raised.
The barn was dimly lit by lanterns, revealing a horrifying scene: a cluster of terrified survivors huddled in one corner while a grotesque figure—a mutated zombie far larger than the Juggernaut—lood over them. Its body was fused with the remains of farming tools and wooden beams, its face a twisted mask of rage.
"Alpha-class infected!" Brain's voice ca through the comms. "It's the source of the runners. Take it down now!"
The mutant roared, its voice shaking the barn's foundations. It swung a massive, improvised weapon—a scythe lded into its arm—forcing the team to scatter.
"Blaze, hit it from the side!" Kane ordered.
Jenna flanked the creature, unleashing a torrent of fire at its legs. The mutant staggered, giving Riley a clear shot.
"Taking the shot," Riley said, her bullet tearing through the mutant's skull.
The creature collapsed, shaking the barn as it fell.
"Clear!" Kane shouted.
But as the survivors wept in relief, Brain's voice crackled through the comms.
"Captain, more heat signatures incoming. We're not done yet."
