The evening sun bathed the sprawling field in an eerie, golden hue, casting long shadows over the overgrown wheat stalks. Beyond the field, the silhouette of an old mansion stood hauntingly, its cracked spires piercing the horizon. The ZETU team disembarked from their armored transport, weapons ready, the silence of the countryside pressing down on them like a suffocating blanket.
"This is the place?" Derek 'Shield' Coleman asked, hoisting his reinforced riot shield over his arm.
"Intel doesn't lie," Marcus 'Iron Will' Kane replied, scanning the distant mansion through his binoculars. "A survivor beacon pinged from inside that structure. But if the swarm we saw outside is any indication, this is no ordinary safehouse."
Riley 'Quick Shot' Bennett adjusted her sniper rifle and crouched near the edge of the field, her sharp eyes catching movent in the distance. "We've got crawlers," she said, her voice calm but urgent. "Looks like they're using the field for cover. This is a trap waiting to happen."
"Then let's spring it," Jenna 'Blaze' Hart grinned, patting the fuel canister strapped to her back.
"No unnecessary risks," Marcus cautioned. "Stick to the plan. Riley, provide overwatch. Derek, stay close. Everyone else, move in fast and quiet."
The team advanced into the field, the tall stalks rustling softly around them. The further they went, the heavier the air seed to grow, thick with the tallic tang of blood and decay. Lila 'Huntress' Navarro paused, crouching low to examine the ground.
"Tracks," she whispered. "Fresh. Sothing's been dragged through here—sothing big."
The sound of rustling ahead brought the team to a halt. Marcus raised a fist, signaling silence, as the rustling grew louder. Suddenly, a decayed figure stumbled into view—a lone zombie wearing a tattered reflective vest. Its gaunt face was frozen in a grotesque snarl, yellowed teeth bared as it stumbled closer.
"Just one?" Ethan 'Brain' O'Connor muttered, gripping his tablet.
"No," Lila replied grimly. "Never just one."
As if on cue, the field erupted with movent. Dozens of zombies, their rotting bodies blending with the wheat stalks, surged forward. Their eyes glowed faintly in the dying light, a sickly orange that sent chills down the team's spines.
"Ambush!" Marcus barked. "Form up!"
Derek moved to the front, his riot shield absorbing the first wave of attackers. Jenna unleashed a stream of fire, creating a burning barrier that slowed the horde. Riley's shots rang out from her vantage point, picking off zombies with precision.
"This isn't random," Ethan shouted over the chaos. "They're driving us toward the mansion!"
"Then we push through!" Marcus replied.
As the team fought their way forward, the mansion lood closer. Its windows glowed faintly, an unnatural light spilling out into the darkening field. The team finally broke free from the swarm, racing toward the mansion's front door.
Inside, the air was colder, heavier. The faint sound of machinery echoed from below.
"We're not alone," Lila said, her voice tense.
And then, from the shadows, a low growl erged.
