The sun had dipped low on the horizon, bathing the city in an eerie orange glow. The school bus, now battered and blood-streaked, stood abandoned in the center of the street, its tires deflated and its fra listing to one side. ZETU's core squad had made it two blocks north toward the evac point, but the sight that greeted them was enough to chill even the most battle-hardened among them.
The undead were gathered in front of a decrepit mansion that lood like a dark sentinel over the desolate street. A sea of zombies stretched out in every direction, their moans echoing through the air like a grim symphony. Their leader—a hulking, grotesque figure covered in matted, rotting flesh—stood at the mansion's gates. Its glowing green eyes locked onto the squad as if it knew they were coming.
"We're not getting through that alive," Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett muttered, her sniper rifle trembling slightly in her hands.
"We don't have a choice," Captain Marcus Kane said firmly. He glanced at Ethan "Brain" O'Connor, who was frantically scanning the mansion with his drones.
"Good news: the mansion's structure is weak," Ethan reported. "If we can breach the foundation, we might be able to collapse it and take most of the horde out with it."
"And the bad news?" Jenna "Blaze" Hart asked, already bracing for the answer.
"The foundation's weakest point is in the basent," Ethan replied. "We'll have to fight our way through the horde and into the mansion to set the charges."
A heavy silence fell over the group as they processed the gravity of the situation.
"Well, no one said saving the world was easy," Derek "Shield" Coleman said, hefting his riot shield. "Let's give these undead bastards sothing to rember."
The team sprang into action. Riley picked off the zombies closest to them, her sniper shots echoing like thunderclaps. Jenna unleashed a torrent of fire, creating a fiery path through the horde. Derek used his shield to batter and shove zombies aside, clearing a path for the others. Lila "Huntress" Navarro darted ahead, her dual pistols firing in rapid succession as she scouted for an opening into the mansion.
The closer they got to the mansion, the more ferocious the horde beca. The leader let out an ear-splitting roar, and the zombies surged forward with renewed aggression.
"Ethan, we're running out of ti!" Marcus shouted as he reloaded his shotgun.
"Almost there!" Ethan replied, guiding a drone toward the mansion's basent entrance. "There! That window—on the left! It leads straight to the basent!"
With a coordinated push, the team reached the window. Marcus smashed it open with the butt of his shotgun, and the squad quickly climbed inside. The basent was dark and damp, with the faint sound of groaning zombies echoing from above.
"Set the charges," Marcus ordered.
Jenna got to work, planting explosives along the cracked walls of the foundation. "Thirty seconds until detonation," she said.
The team bolted back to the window, fighting off zombies that had begun pouring into the basent. They barely made it out when the mansion erupted in a massive explosion, the shockwave knocking them to the ground.
When the dust settled, the mansion was reduced to rubble, and the horde lay still. But as the team caught their breath, Marcus noticed sothing in the distance—another horde, even larger, was moving toward them.
"This fight isn't over," he said grimly, gripping his shotgun. "Not by a long shot."
