The night was suffocating, a heavy fog shrouding the barren wasteland outside the city. The team stared out at a grotesque sight: a horde of decayed, mud-covered zombies, their skeletal fras coated in layers of soil and debris, shambling across the cracked earth. These were no ordinary zombies—they were rising from the earth itself, as if clawing their way out of a cursed underworld.
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's voice crackled through the comms, sharp with urgency. "Team, these things are different. Scans show abnormally high densities of organic matter combined with minerals. They're tougher, like walking rock formations."
"That's great news," Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart quipped, gripping her flathrower. "Burning rock is my specialty."
Captain Marcus Kane raised his shotgun, scanning the oncoming horde. "Blaze, hold off on the fire. Let's assess. We don't know if they're flammable."
"You're kidding , right?" she shot back, incredulous.
"Shield, up front. Huntress, scout for any signs of an origin point," Marcus ordered. "We're not wasting ammo unless we have to."
Derek "Shield" Coleman advanced, his riot shield a sturdy barrier against the unknown. The earthbound dead let out low, guttural groans as they moved. Despite their sluggish pace, there was sothing deeply unsettling about their sheer persistence.
"These aren't normal," Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett said from her high vantage point, sniper rifle trained on the horde. "They don't feel random. It's like they're heading sowhere specific."
"Northwest," Lila "Huntress" Navarro reported, her voice crackling softly through the comms. "I see a fissure in the earth, about a kiloter out. These things are coming from there, like a breach in the ground."
"Figures," Marcus muttered. "Blaze, Quick Shot, stay back and provide support. Shield, you're with . Huntress, lead the way."
As they moved forward, the horde closed in. The zombies were relentless, their brittle fingers clawing at Shield's armor as he pushed through. Marcus fired controlled blasts from his shotgun, aiming for heads but finding them surprisingly resistant.
"Brain, we need an analysis. What's keeping these things moving?" Marcus demanded.
"Hang tight," Brain replied. "I'm running simulations. But based on their density, you're not looking at regular necrotic tissue. These might be connected to a geological anomaly—like so sort of energy keeping them animated."
The team reached the fissure. It gaped open like a wound in the earth, and from its depths ca a sickly green glow. Inside, twisted roots and jagged rocks pulsed with the sa eerie light.
"This is it," Huntress said, grim. "The source is down there."
"Quick Shot, cover us from up top," Marcus ordered. "Blaze, prepare charges. We're sealing this thing."
The zombies grew more frantic, as if sensing their link to the fissure was about to be severed. Blaze set explosives while Shield and Marcus held the line.
"Charges are ready!" Blaze shouted.
"Fall back!" Marcus yelled.
The team retreated as the fissure exploded, the green light vanishing. The earthbound zombies collapsed, their forms crumbling into lifeless rubble.
"Another breach sealed," Marcus said, surveying the aftermath. "But how many more are out there?"
