The narrow streets of the abandoned city felt alive with tension. A thick fog curled around shattered windows and crumbled stone, muting the sound of the ZETU team's cautious steps. But the silence was deceptive. Sowhere in the labyrinth of decaying buildings, a new threat lurked—a Plaguebearer, a zombie variant known to infect others with a single touch.
"Eyes sharp," Marcus "Iron Will" Kane warned, his voice low but firm. His shotgun was raised, sweeping every shadowed corner. "This one's different. It's fast, and it's deadly."
A guttural growl echoed from the mist ahead, sending chills down everyone's spines.
"Contact, one o'clock," whispered Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro, her pistols drawn. She crouched low, blending into the fog as her sharp eyes scanned for movent.
"Brain, what's the scanner saying?" Marcus asked over comms.
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor tapped furiously on his tablet. "It's…moving erratically. It's like it's aware of the scan and trying to avoid it. Be careful—it's not like the others."
Before Marcus could respond, a figure darted into view. The Plaguebearer was horrifying to behold—gaunt, with stringy hair and glowing, malevolent eyes. Its tattered clothes were soaked in blood, and its bony fingers twitched with an unnatural hunger.
"Engage!" Marcus barked, firing a blast of buckshot at the creature.
The Plaguebearer leapt to the side with inhuman speed, dodging the attack entirely. It charged forward, its glowing eyes locked on Derek "Shield" Coleman, who stepped up with his reinforced shield.
"Co on, then!" Derek growled, bracing himself.
The Plaguebearer slamd into the shield with enough force to make Derek stagger. Its claws raked at the tal, sparks flying as it tried to find an opening.
"Blaze, light it up!" Marcus ordered.
Jenna "Blaze" Hart launched an incendiary grenade, the explosion engulfing the Plaguebearer in flas. It screeched in agony but didn't stop. Instead, it turned its attention to Jenna, its speed doubling as it raced toward her.
"Not today," Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett muttered from her perch on a rooftop. Her sniper rifle cracked, the bullet striking the Plaguebearer's knee and slowing it just enough for Jenna to get clear.
"It's adapting to everything we throw at it!" Jenna shouted, retreating behind Derek.
Ethan's voice ca through the comms, urgent. "It's spreading sothing airborne. You've got to bring it down now, or this whole area will be a quarantine zone!"
Lila darted through the shadows, coming up behind the creature. "Marcus, distract it!" she called.
Marcus fired again, the shotgun blast grazing the Plaguebearer's shoulder. It spun around, giving Lila the opening she needed. She aid both pistols at its glowing eyes and fired.
The creature staggered, letting out a final, deafening roar before collapsing into the street. Black ichor seeped from its wounds, hissing as it hit the ground.
"Is it down?" Derek asked, panting.
"For now," Marcus replied grimly. "Brain, confirm."
Ethan scanned the area. "No other movent. But that thing was just the start of sothing worse. We need to move."
As the team regrouped, the fog seed to thicken, and an eerie howl rose in the distance. The hunt wasn't over yet.
