Smoke and fire raged behind them, but the Devourer was still alive. The ZETU team had no choice but to retreat, their weapons barely making a dent in the creature's evolving form.

"Captain, we've got movent ahead," Lila "Huntress" Navarro reported, her voice tense.

Marcus "Iron Will" Kane wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Tell it's not more of them."

"It's worse," Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett muttered, peering through her sniper scope.

A new type of undead stood before them—dozens of them. Unlike the mindless, staggering zombies they were used to, these creatures were organized, watchful, waiting. Their hollow eyes flickered with a twisted intelligence, their rotting lips curled into sothing resembling a smirk. They weren't attacking yet.

"They're observing us," Ethan "Brain" O'Connor whispered, his hands shaking as he monitored his drone feed. "This…this isn't normal."

Jenna "Blaze" Hart gritted her teeth. "Then let's stop staring and start burning." She raised her flathrower.

"No." Marcus grabbed her arm. "They're testing us. If they wanted to attack, they would have."

Derek "Shield" Coleman took a cautious step forward, his riot shield raised. "Captain, I don't like this."

The largest of the brood—taller than the others, its flesh stretched thin over exposed bone—let out a low, rasping growl. The others responded in kind, their movents unnervingly synchronized.

Then, the leader did sothing no zombie had ever done before.

It pointed at them.

A silent order.

The brood lunged.

Riley fired first, a bullet piercing through one of their skulls. It fell—but didn't stay down. The thing twitched and snapped its head back into place, as if rewinding ti itself.

"What the hell?!" Riley gasped.

Jenna unleashed a wave of fire, incinerating several of them. But those that survived didn't panic. Instead, they learned, sidestepping the flas, maneuvering between the chaos like soldiers.

"These aren't just zombies!" Ethan shouted. "They're adapting!"

Marcus knew they couldn't win this fight. "Fall back! Now!"

The team ran, bullets flying behind them. The undead pursued, moving too fast, their skeletal limbs propelling them forward with terrifying speed.

Ahead, a crumbling church stood like a beacon in the darkness. "Inside!" Marcus ordered.

They slamd the doors shut behind them, barricading themselves in. The undead gathered outside, peering through the cracked windows. Waiting.

"This isn't just an outbreak anymore," Ethan whispered. "It's a war."

Then, from the church's shadows, a voice spoke.

"You shouldn't have co here."

The team spun around, weapons raised.

A man—ragged, emaciated, yet very much alive—stood at the altar. His eyes were wild, desperate.

"You think they're the monsters?" he whispered. "You haven't t their queen yet."
