The air inside the fortress was thick with the scent of damp stone and burning torches. General Viktor "Bloodfang" Kruger stood alone, his massive arms folded across his chest, his eyes narrowed in deep thought. The dim light flickered across his scarred face, emphasizing the hardened lines that spoke of war, death, and the burden of power.
Tonight, sothing felt different.
A quiet knock echoed through the chamber. Kruger didn't move.
"Enter," he commanded.
The heavy door creaked open, revealing Eva "Black Widow" Morales. Dressed in her sleek combat gear, her twin blades strapped to her hips, she stepped forward, eyes sharp with intent.
"We've located the resistance's stronghold," she reported. "They're holed up in the old catacombs beneath the ruined city. Reinforced defenses, snipers positioned along the upper walkways, and—" she hesitated.
Kruger's eyes flicked toward her. "And?"
She exhaled. "They're using necrotech-enhanced sentinels. It seems they've managed to reverse-engineer so of Dr. Voss's work. If they master it, they could turn our own creations against us."
Kruger's jaw tightened. The thought of his enemies twisting his weapons into their own was unacceptable.
"We strike at dawn."
Eva crossed her arms. "Are you sure? The terrain gives them a heavy advantage. If we attack head-on, we'll suffer major losses."
Kruger turned toward the small table in the room, gripping the hilt of a combat knife resting beside a map. He ran his fingers along its cold steel, his mind sharpening like the blade in his hand.
"Then we don't attack head-on." His voice was like a growl.
Eva raised an eyebrow. "What do you have in mind?"
Kruger finally lifted his gaze, his golden eyes burning with ruthless intent.
"I will go in first. Alone."
Eva's smirk faltered. "You're serious?"
Kruger sheathed the knife at his side and stepped forward, his muscular fra towering over her. "A siege will cost too many n. But a ghost in the dark? That's sothing they won't expect. I'll carve through their defenses from the inside. When the ti is right, the rest of you will follow."
For the first ti, Eva hesitated. Not out of fear for herself, but out of respect. She knew Kruger was unstoppable. But even he had limits.
"Fine," she said, stepping aside. "Just don't get yourself killed, General. We still need you."
Kruger smirked as he strode past her, the torchlight gleaming against the edge of his blade.
"They need ," he murmured, more to himself than anyone else.
Then, without another word, he vanished into the shadows, leaving behind only the scent of steel and death.
