Now reading: Chapter 221: By the Sea (End) from Horror Movie Survival Rules, a Horror novel by 东吴一点红.

Seeing a living whale and seeing a dead whale are completely different experiences.

Beyond that, the difference between seeing a whale’s corpse floating on the sea surface and accidentally swimming, alone in the deep ocean, into the gaping mouth of a dead whale is like heaven and earth.

No wonder there had suddenly been a fishless vacuum zone underwater—it turned out this area was actually inside the whale’s mouth!

A wave of intense fear hit Herbert, and he couldn’t control himself, “gurgling” out a stream of bubbles.

As he flailed in panic, the video footage began shaking violently.

[Actually, from the mont I saw those whale harpoons, my consciousness started to blur. It was like being drunk—chaotic light spots appeared before my eyes, everything seed to co alive, sprouting tentacles, twisting and coiling, emitting strange, dizzying murmurs…]

[The high-pressure environnt, deep-sea fear, cold exposure, and nitrogen dissolving into the nervous system causing nitrogen narcosis… all these factors combined pushed into complete madness. At the most dangerous mont, I even wanted to rip off my breathing mask. Fortunately, Marno noticed sothing was wrong and swam down to pull back…]

In the rest of the video, the cara continued to shake wildly.

Everly sped up the playback and skipped through the rest of the footage.

Herbert had a good partner. When Marno saw him losing his mind, he imdiately swam down, grabbed Herbert’s arm without hesitation, and—despite Herbert’s resistance—forcefully dragged him away from the giant whale’s mouth and all the way upward.

The cara, crooked and unstable in Herbert’s hand, tilted with his movents. From bottom to top, it captured Marno’s determined profile as he swam.

Surrounded by countless dead fish, he carried his companion, head tilted back, legs kicking, struggling to chase the distant sea surface.

The light kept shaking. Marno’s figure flickered between clarity and blur. In those fleeting monts, he almost seed to rge with the surrounding dead fish—swaying together with their rigid tails, drifting toward a direction away from the darkness, toward a place forever out of reach, escaping, escaping, escaping…

……

The video ended after the two reached the first decompression stop.

At a depth of around 120 ters underwater, the remaining decompression process would take several hours, and there was no real need to continue filming.

According to Herbert’s postscript at the end of the video, thanks to Marno’s rescue, he was able to ascend from the deep sea safely even after losing consciousness.

But his recklessness had hard Marno.

In order to bring Herbert to a safe decompression point as quickly as possible, Marno ignored his own safety and ascended rapidly, triggering an air embolism. After barely making it to the surface, he was imdiately rushed to the ICU and was still undergoing ergency treatnt.

After finishing the entire video with a heavy sense of emotion, Everly dragged the progress bar back to the segnt where Herbert was inside the mouth of the giant deep-sea whale. She found the fleeting image of the harpoon, took a screenshot, and zood in on it.

She felt like she had seen a similar pattern sowhere before… right, it was the Golden Anchor!

She had seen similar decorative patterns filled with tentacles and octopus-like sea motifs along the edges of the summoning array used by those cultists to summon the giant sea creature!

Could it be that the sa cultists were also responsible for causing the Gilosha radiation disease?

Horror Movie Survival Rule #1: pay attention to the hints.

Everly felt that these decorative totems might be a kind of indirect hint—suggesting that the Gilosha incident and the destruction of the Golden Anchor were linked by the sa hidden hand behind the scenes.

She closed the video site and continued checking what happened afterward.

A group of influencers and paranormal enthusiasts led by Herbert successively explored the mysterious waters. However, due to limited diving qualifications, most of them never even reached a depth of 40 ters and surfaced early. The only person who actually managed to capture anything substantial was Herbert.

After surfacing, these civilians more or less developed symptoms of radiation exposure such as nosebleeds, dizziness, and vomiting. This made it clear that not only the dead fish, but also the seawater in the mysterious region itself was highly radioactive.

About a week after Herbert’s video was released, an official investigation team finally took action.

They rented a three-person deep-sea subrsible from an oil company, carrying one pilot and two investigators, and descended straight down from the surface.

The subrsible went down in the morning and surfaced at night.

What exactly the three of them saw during the dive was not disclosed by the investigation team.

Three days later, the U.S. governnt urgently dispatched another batch of unmanned subrsibles to retrieve, package, and transport the nuclear waste piled up on the seafloor.

To be honest, when this first broke, not only foreigners were shocked, even Aricans themselves were surprised—since when did the U.S. governnt care so much about appearances that it would publicly clean up nuclear waste dumped decades ago?

Yet no one expected that after the nuclear waste was removed, the frail patients in Gilosha actually recovered rapidly.

What was this—was this yet another horror story disguised as environntal protection?

Confused, Everly went onto paranormal enthusiast forums and began digging through various posts.

This forum was the sa one Dylan had posted his help thread in during the “Cursed Chain Letter” incident—“Sleiteo Manor.” It had even appeared in a horror film before, playing a key role in the protagonist’s investigation. Compared to the countless fake paranormal forums online, it was considered far more authoritative.

After spending so ti browsing the forum, Everly discovered that its mbers were all remarkably knowledgeable, spoke in an engaging and pleasant way, and were always quick to keep up with current events. It often gave her access to the latest insider information. So whenever she encountered sothing she couldn’t make sense of, her first instinct was to check the forum.

As expected, in the fast-moving world of Sleiteo Manor, soone had already started discussing this incident.

[Gilosha Radiation Disease Healed Without dicine: Natural Curse or re Coincidence?]

[1F (Original poster): As the title says, everyone should already be familiar with the news, so I won’t repeat it here. Regarding the sudden recovery of Gilosha patients imdiately after the nuclear waste was removed, I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts.]

The thread was posted yesterday, but people were still actively bumping it. By the ti Everly opened it, the discussion had already reached an astonishing 300 replies.

Everly skimd through it quickly.

At first, the majority opinion regarding Gilosha’s radiation illness was that it was either a “divine punishnt from a nature deity” or that “so nature witch had been angered by the pollution.”

Others believed there might be a cursed object lying deep beneath the sea. The accumulation of nuclear waste had amplified its power, allowing it to ride the ocean currents and transmit radiation and curse effects through the dead fish to the citizens of Gilosha—

[23F: Because nuclear radiation is a form of energy-bearing radiation. When a force becos strong enough, it can penetrate the barrier of reality and affect the supernatural side. We can approximate all kinds of energy as a kind of “wave.” In that sense, nuclear waste clearly caused distortion and amplification of the “ripples” emitted by the cursed object. Once those wastes were removed, it was equivalent to eliminating the amplifier acting on the cursed object. With the curse weakened and no longer able to spread to the citizens of Gilosha, their illness naturally healed.]

It sounded surprisingly coherent and even sowhat convincing.

However, 23F’s argunt was soon challenged by soone claiming to have “exclusive insider information.”

[58F (quoting 23F): It’s not a cursed object—it’s a relic.]

[59F: I have so connection with people in the official investigation team. I was on the ship when they first deployed the deep-sea subrsible. So I can state clearly that what lies beneath that sea area is an evil ancient relic.]

[60F (quoting 59F): ???

You’re just going to say that outright? If the governnt didn’t disclose it, that ans it should be confidential, right? Why are you revealing it so directly? Or are you just joking?]

[61F (quoting 60F): Because I can’t stand it. Do you think they’re keeping it secret just to protect confidentiality? No—they’re doing it to avoid international law regarding “common heritage of all mankind” applied to underwater relics in international waters, so they can monopolize that site.]

[62F: And just for such an ugly purpose, they turned a blind eye to the ominous fish corpses, ignored the broken seal on the relic, ignored SAI’s obstruction, and still insisted on excavating that site… Honestly, I have no obligation to keep this secret for them.]

When Everly saw “SAI” ntioned in 62F, her eyes sharpened.

Although mbers of paranormal forums were usually well-inford and had extensive knowledge, Everly had observed that most of them were actually unaware that the U.S. even had an investigative organization like SAI.

Since 62F even knew about the Special Affairs Investigation Bureau, Everly felt that what this person was saying might actually be true.

So she continued reading more carefully.

62F clearly harbored resentnt toward the U.S. governnt, and in later posts revealed a considerable amount of information related to the underwater relic.

According to them, beneath the mysterious sea area lay an extrely evil and highly dangerous relic. It did not belong to any known civilization and had a history far older than human understanding, possibly representing so long-lost ancient deity.

The power of that deity was chaotic and terrifying. If it were ever to leak out, it could bring a catastrophic disaster to the human world. Perhaps because of this, soone had placed a seal over the relic.

That seal suppressed the leakage of the evil power and trapped the fish contaminated by the relic around its periter, preventing them from affecting the normal ecology of other sea areas. The poster also speculated that the thick fog covering the mysterious sea area might also be part of the seal, as it reduced the likelihood of outsiders accidentally entering the region.

Seventy years ago, a U.S. naval vessel dumped nuclear waste into that sea area.

When the waste entered the deep sea, it not only exposed the fish in the mysterious waters to radiation, but also amplified the pollution leaking from the relic, indirectly weakening the original seal. As for whether the dead fish had originally been dead or had been killed by radiation, the poster admitted they weren’t sure.

If it had only been radiation, the balance between the relic and the seal would not have been broken in such a short ti.

However, at the end of June this year, an undersea earthquake caused by tectonic movent affected that sea area. The seal above the relic was damaged during the quake, allowing so of the fish to break free from its restraint and drift with the ocean currents toward Gilosha, bringing both pollution and radiation into the city.

After the earthquake subsided, the seal gradually began to repair itself, and the fish corpses stopped “escaping.” In theory, the investigation team only needed to remove the nuclear waste and restore the site to its original state for the incident to be resolved.

However, the U.S. governnt developed a desire for the power contained within the relic.

[256F: That relic is extrely evil. When the first deep-sea manned subrsible descended to the seafloor, all three occupants lost their sanity and fell into madness after seeing the statues inside the ruins.]

[257F: The U.S. military beca very interested in those statues and wanted to study the chanism by which they induce madness, hoping to develop an unconventional weapon for battlefield use. As a result, they decided to deploy seven unmanned subrsibles to the seafloor to retrieve so of the statues from the relic.]

[258F: Judging by the tiline, those statues should be arriving at Gilosha Port in a few days…]
