"Back then... I still had my Arican green card." The young girl scratched her hair. "It was only later that Dad helped get my citizenship back."
The two of them walked out of the bathroom together and sat down on the bed. Then she spoke again.
"You must have been really angry back then, right?"
He just shook his head.
He had no ti to be angry then. His priority was worrying about her; he searched all over the world for her. Even when he heard that the body of an Asian international student had been found in so Arican state, he would fly thousands of miles just to see if it was her. It wasn’t until one day, when he unexpectedly discovered she had canceled her school registration, that he realized it all might have just been a cruel prank. He hated her, hated her to the core! He burned all their photos and smashed every gift she had given him to pieces... He beca demoralized, lived a life of drunken revelry, debased himself, got drunk every day, and went out with any girl looking for a one-night stand... But it was a pity; he still couldn’t forget her. That love was like an inescapable curse. He couldn’t break free. He tried countless thods, yet he simply couldn’t muster any interest in any other girl.
"Let’s not talk about that anymore!" Kris Cooper said with a smile, gently holding her shoulders. "Anyway... we’re together again now. It’s getting late, let’s sleep!"
Bringing up the past would only make her sad; it was better left unsaid.
Her cell phone on the table emitted a soft PING.
Vera Wave picked up her phone. On the screen were four or five missed calls, all from Nathan Leafcastle.
Her phone gave a quick BUZZ as another ssage ca in.
"Kris Cooper, I’m warning you! If you don’t let Vera call back right now, I’m calling the police and reporting you for kidnapping!"
She hadn’t answered his repeated calls, so Nathan Leafcastle assud Kris Cooper was preventing her from doing so. This text ssage was clearly intended for him.
Upon seeing the ssage, Vera Wave instantly stood up.
"What’s wrong?"
"I... I need to go out for a bit. Brother Nathan is still outside." She looked helpless.
She initially thought he had left long ago. Who would have guessed he’d still be waiting outside after all this ti?
Kris Cooper frowned. "It’s cold outside. I’ll go."
She hurriedly grabbed his arm. "I’ll go with you. I don’t want you two to fight."
If Nathan Leafcastle didn’t see her, he definitely wouldn’t be at ease. Plus, with Kris Cooper’s temper, the two of them were bound to start arguing again.
Frowning, Kris Cooper turned, grabbed a thick coat, and draped it over her. Then they walked out of the bedroom, one after the other.
「Outside the door.」
Nathan Leafcastle glanced at his watch. Three minutes had passed since he sent the text.
He had already decided: if there was no response in another two minutes, he would call the police.
The sound of footsteps ca from inside. Nathan Leafcastle looked up.
The tightly shut main door opened, and a figure walked out. It was a tall man in a white bathrobe—Kris Cooper.
"Where’s Vera?" Nathan Leafcastle demanded, his voice grave.
"Brother Nathan!" A voice ca from behind Kris Cooper. Vera Wave stepped out from the doorway and walked down the steps, an apologetic look on her face. "I’m really sorry... I... I didn’t know you were still here."
"Don’t say any more!" Nathan Leafcastle grabbed her wrist. "I’ll take you back first. We can co pick up Grandma tomorrow morning when it’s light."
"I..." Vera Wave bit her lip. "I can’t go."
"Don’t be afraid, Vera!" Nathan Leafcastle gave her a reassuring smile. "Don’t worry, I’ll help you. If he still doesn’t let Grandma go tomorrow, we’ll find a lawyer. This world isn’t his to own."
