The Kashima Project was the very project that had led to Walter Wave’s bankruptcy, the cause of Vera’s father’s suicide by jumping off a building. Naturally, she was particularly sensitive to that na.
Why does Kris have this information?!
Holding those few thin pages of docunts, Vera’s fingers were trembling slightly.
She bit her lip and stuffed the docunts back into the kraft paper envelope.
Clasping the docunt envelope in her hands, Vera’s chest was heaving violently.
All along, she had firmly believed, resolute in her conviction, that the Cooper Family had absolutely no involvent in this matter. She rely thought it was a misunderstanding on Nathan Leafcastle’s part.
After all, having lost his mother, it was understandable for soone in such deep grief and anger to hold so extre views.
But...
Hurriedly stuffing the docunts into the safe, Vera turned and headed for the door.
She had seen nothing, absolutely nothing...
Her hand on the doorknob, she paused.
Slowly, she turned around and looked at the safe. After a mont of internal struggle, she walked back and reopened it.
It must be a misunderstanding, a coincidence... Or perhaps he had another reason... In any case, the Cooper Family could not possibly be involved in this!
Repeating these assurances to herself, Vera took out the docunts again and read them line by line.
These docunts were the ones Kris had brought back from Singapore, listing several companies competing for the Kashima Project.
Vera knew so of them, but not others; even Barker was listed among them.
Each ti she saw a company na that wasn’t "Ashton," she silently breathed a sigh of relief.
As she flipped through the pages one by one, only the last page remained. She had already relaxed considerably.
Just as she’d thought, her kind Christoper Cooper could never be the one behind Walter Wave’s bankruptcy.
However, reality belied her expectations.
Just when Vera thought she wouldn’t see "Ashton" in these docunts, the na of the last bidding company—a simple line of text—stung her eyes.
"Ashton Group... Person in charge: Christoper Cooper..."
For a full half-minute, Vera’s mind was completely blank.
She only snapped out of it when soone knocked on the door. Flustered, she hurriedly stuffed the docunts into the file envelope, shoved them back into the safe, and slamd it shut.
"Co... co in!"
Bailey Hansen pushed the door open and walked in. Seeing Vera scramble up from the desk, flustered, Bailey eyed her up and down with suspicion.
"Vera, are you okay?"
"N-No... I’m fine," Vera said, covering her fluster with a cough. "I... I was looking for a docunt, but I can’t find it. Kris might have left it at my place... I an, at the old family ho."
"It’s alright, we can have Tommy Taylor fetch it," Bailey said, walking over to the desk. "I’m going to take sothing to Kris. Want to co with ?"
"Okay," Vera nodded quickly. "I... I’ll go change."
"Alright, I’ll wait for you downstairs then."
Bailey smiled at her and headed downstairs.
Vera walked heavily out of the study, returned to her bedroom, and went into the walk-in closet. Looking at her dresses hanging on the rack, she felt waves of dizziness.
She reached out to steady herself on a nearby cabinet, took a mont to compose herself, then pulled out an outfit and changed before heading downstairs.
Downstairs in the living room, Henry Cooper stood before Christoper Cooper, his expression grave.
"Did sothing happen to Kris?"
"What are you talking about?" Christoper replied, looking relaxed. "What could possibly happen to him?"
"Wipe that smirk off your face," Henry Cooper said, his expression stern. "I may be old, but I’m not deaf or blind. Did you think I wouldn’t know what ti you two got back last night?"
