Now, what am I supposed to do? she wondered. If I stay, how could I ever face Father again? But if I leave... what about Kris Cooper? What wrong has he done? He loves , and I love him too! That man is the greatest love of my life; how could I possibly bear to leave him? On one side is the man I love most, and on the other, the father who doted on and whom I respected above all. How can I possibly choose?!
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
The door was knocked on softly.
Vera guessed it was Bailey and hurriedly composed herself.
"Co in."
Sure enough, Bailey entered, carrying a bowl of soup.
"Mrs. Zhang made so soup. You should have so too; the sweet and sour flavor is quite good." Handing the soup to her, Bailey’s face wore a gentle, caring expression. "It’s alright. We’ve weathered so many storms; this little thing won’t faze the Cooper family!"
Seeing her dejected expression, Bailey picked up the spoon, scooped up so soup, and brought it to Vera’s lips.
"Here, try a sip. I’m not kidding, it’s truly delicious!"
Vera’s eyes welled up, and tears began to stream down her face.
"Mom, why... why are you so good to ?!"
"Silly girl, you’re my daughter-in-law. Who else would I be good to if not you?" Bailey quickly set the bowl down and, grabbing a tissue, began to wipe Vera’s face. "Now, now, don’t cry. Let tell you, won shouldn’t cry; crying makes you look ugly! We can’t have such a pretty girl like you becoming ugly!"
The more Bailey comforted her, the harder Vera cried.
Bailey was at a loss with all the tears.
"You young ladies are just like sponges... Alright, alright, stop crying now." Bailey drew Vera into an embrace, gently patting her back. "Mom knows your heart aches. That’s just how the world is sotis; things don’t always go as planned. The past is past; don’t keep dwelling on it and making things hard for yourself. I know you’re a strong girl. You’ll get through this too."
"Mom!" Vera lifted her tear-stained face. "I an, hypothetically, if Dad and your own father fell into a river together, who would you save?"
"That question..." Bailey shrugged. "Is quite simple!"
Simple?! Vera thought.
"Yes!" Bailey said casually. "Of course, I would save your father."
"Why?"
"Because my father has already passed away." Bailey raised an eyebrow gently. "Naturally, the living are more important. Besides, if my father were still alive, he would definitely want to save Christoper Cooper. What father doesn’t want his daughter to be happy?"

Savoring the aning of these words, Vera suddenly felt a wave of enlightennt, as if a burden had been lifted from her heart.
"Alright, stop overthinking things." Bailey picked up the bowl of soup again and handed it to her. "Have it quickly while it’s hot; it won’t taste as good once it’s cold. Mom’s counting on you to continue the Cooper family line, you know. If you starve yourself and fall ill, who’s going to give a plump, healthy grandson in the future, hmm?!"
