The group quickly left Sophia Thompson’s law firm and hurried back to the City Bureau. By the ti they arrived at Michael Freenan’s office half an hour later, he had already taken Vera Wave’s new testimony.
"Vera!" Bailey Hansen rushed forward first, grabbing her shoulders. "What are you doing?!"
"Mom!" Vera stood up. "I’m sorry."
"I know you’re worried about Kris Cooper, but you..." Bailey glanced at Michael Freenan and the others. "How could you do such a foolish thing?"
At this mont, Christopher Cooper also walked over. "Let’s go ho and discuss this."
"Yes, let’s talk about it at ho first!" Bailey exclaid, then tried to pull Vera’s arm, ready to leave.
"Dad, Mom." Vera stood there unmoving. "It was really who did it. Kris had nothing to do with it."
"Mr. Cooper, Mrs. Hansen!" Michael Freenan approached them. "Vera has now confessed, and we have just recorded her testimony. We will start investigating this matter imdiately."
The implication was clear: at this point, they could no longer take Vera away.
Bailey frowned and looked at Lucille Matthias. "This..." she began, trailing off.
Lucille stepped forward, took the testimony from Michael Freenan’s assistant, opened it, and carefully read it from beginning to end.
She placed the testimony on the table and waved her hand gently.
"You can go first."
Michael nodded, leading his assistant out of the office.
Lucille approached Vera and stared seriously at her face.
"Vera, tell Aunt Lucille the truth. Did you do this to save Kris, or... is this the truth?"
"It’s true. It was I who pushed the person; Kris was just taking the bla for . He always refused to admit it because he didn’t want to be punished." Vera lowered her face. "I’m sorry for causing trouble for everyone."
The others looked at each other, for a mont unable to determine if she was telling the truth.
"Let’s do this," Lucille said, turning to Bailey and the others. "Leave her with for now. I’ll have my people investigate thoroughly."
Since Vera had surrendered, she naturally had to follow procedure. Moreover, the truth of this matter needed to be verified.
Christopher and the others understood this and nodded lightly.
Lucille then called for Michael to take Vera downstairs while she led the others back to her own office.
Everyone settled into their seats. Lucille personally served them tea, then leaned against the table and was the first to speak.
"You know Vera and Kris better than I do. Who do you think is lying?"
Bailey and Christopher gazed at one another, both shaking their heads.
They knew Kris’s temperant. Six years ago, he had almost willingly thrown his future away for Vera. He loved that girl to the point of madness. It wasn’t surprising that he would do sothing like this to protect her.
On the other hand, they had also witnessed Vera’s feelings for Kris. These past few days, the girl had barely eaten or slept. It also wasn’t out of the question for her to do sothing foolish for Kris’s sake.
After all, only the two of them knew what really happened at that ti.
Of course, they hoped for their son’s freedom, but that didn’t an they wanted to see Vera suffer for him.
Given the situation, the couple simply couldn’t determine who was telling the truth.
"Ms. Thompson," Christopher said, taking a light breath. "I can’t help but feel that Vera is lying."
Bailey frowned and said, "I just don’t understand. It was clearly an accident, so why is the other party suing Kris?!"
