Kai stood at the lip and set Miryam on a rolled cloak where the warmth would not lt her, then kneeled and touched his palms together and pressed his thumbs to his sternum. He let the room’s hum climb into him so the first words would not shake. When he opened the small, private road inside, he did it with a care he didn’t give enemies.

He opened the channel the system wanted — no, not the system. The channel he had learned with pain and fights and too much hunger. Essence Eater, but calm. He didn’t take it. He breathed a way of breathing that told the room to listen. The pool’s glow deepened and set, like a singer taking the right note.

The pool tensed around his wrist like a living thing. The eggs pulsed in a new cadence. The hum rose. He felt hunger wake in 100,000 small mouths that had never eaten. He felt law settle over them like a net — his law. Not rage. Not a crown. Only the simple sentence: you will fight and you will live or you will feed the one who does. You will belong. You will defend this mountain. You will not break.
He held still and let the room take his heat.
Words moved in the halls without being loud. Luna took the inner ring like it was a cradle and a wall at once. She moved blankets, counted bowls, checked lamp oil and fresh cloth.
