Roxanna raised one of her eyebrows when Jarva handed her a Black Fang token, a plaque made from a demon beast’s bone.
Honestly, she didn’t expect this at all. She thought the system would give her the token like usual. She even waited a few minutes, expecting another one to appear inside her inventory.
But nothing happened. The system didn’t add anything, so this token... really ca from Jarva himself.
"The Black Fang Tribe is spread across this land," Jarva explained, his voice calm now. "So you need to carry this token to prove that you are one of us. Do not lose it."
"I won’t," Roxanna replied seriously. "I’d be extrely stupid if I lost sothing like this."
Just a while ago, Azul acted like a good cop, saying that they didn’t give the Black Fang Tribe so of their black crystals because they wanted to "gift" them. But they did it because they wanted the Black Fang Tribe to owe them.
It was because, from Jarva’s point of view, Roxanna had done sothing that most people wouldn’t be able to do. Even after one of the Black Fang warriors tried to kill Luan, Roxanna still chose forgiveness.
When the truth was, Roxanna still held a grudge against them, but she only pretended to forgive them.
"We can only give you this much," Roxanna said as she handed six black crystals to Jarva. Then she lied calmly, "The demon beast we caught didn’t have many black crystals inside its body."
Roxanna wasn’t an expert at lying. Whenever she lied, she would do things like scratching the back of her hand or tapping her foot on the ground.
Zeir, who noticed it imdiately, reached out, held her hand, and stopped her from scratching it even more, almost like he was quietly telling her to calm down.
"You got what you wanted," Luan said coldly. His eyes were sharp, like a blade. "So back off now. Back off while I’m still being nice."
Jarva raised both hands, looking at Luan with worry in his eyes. "Alright. Alright. We’ll leave." Then he signaled his people to move away from the Vixeria Settlent.
Roxanna held her breath for a mont because she truly didn’t expect the crisis—which she thought would cause a huge war between tribes—to end peacefully, and in such a... boring way.
Well, it wasn’t like a boring ending was a bad thing. After all, it was better to feel bored than to see her people get slaughtered.
However, for so reason, the calr the situation around her beca, the more nervous she felt.
She rembered what so people used to say: When life feels too peaceful... It might an a storm is coming.
Roxanna didn’t really believe it. But, who knew?
Jarva and his n slowly stepped back and left the Vixeria Settlent after getting what they wanted. As a good host, Roxanna should have invited them to drink tea together.
But first of all... they didn’t even have tea, and more importantly, she didn’t want any of them stepping inside her ho, not even for one second.
"See you later," Jarva said with a smile, as if nothing had happened.
Roxanna forced herself to smile back and wave her hand politely. But the mont Jarva disappeared from her sight, she dropped her hands, and the smile on her face vanished instantly.
She let out a long breath, like her body had been holding it the whole ti. Then she quickly crouched down and wrapped her arms around herself the mont the danger was finally gone.
Only now did she realize how badly her body was shaking. Her heart was beating so fast, it felt like it was about to jump out of her chest.
"What’s wrong?" Azul asked. He crouched down beside her right away, his face full of worry. "Are you sick?"
He patted Roxanna’s back a few tis, doing his best to calm her down. Surprisingly, it worked like magic. Her fox ears slowly lowered, and even her tail began to sway gently from side to side, like she was finally relaxing.
If she had been a cat, she probably would’ve been purring already.
Roxanna turned to Azul and forced a small smile. "I’m fine now." Then she straightened her back and stood up again, trying to look strong.
"Alright!" she said firmly. "Now that those bastards are gone, we can continue pulling all the black crystals out of the Demon Fenrir’s body."
However, before she could step back into the settlent, she realized sothing was wrong. "Wait..." Roxanna murmured. "Has Calen still not woken up?"
That didn’t make sense.
The Black Fang Tribe had caused so much noise. Anyone inside the Vixeria Settlent should have rushed to the gate right away.
In fact, Roxanna had already seen a crowd of beastkins gathered near the gate, so of them whispering excitedly like they were watching a show.
Even the elders, who had trouble walking, still forced themselves to co because they didn’t want to miss the gossip.
But Calen? He was nowhere to be seen.
But aside from that, Luan had literally killed soone inside their hut, so there was no way Calen didn’t hear any of that.
How could he still be sleeping?
Luan answered casually, "I don’t know." He shrugged. "When I left our hut, the bedroom door was still closed."
Roxanna frowned deeply, and her gut told her sothing wasn’t right. She quickly turned to her husbands and spoke fast, trying to stay calm. "Alright. You guys help the warriors take out all the black crystals and wash them." She pointed toward the settlent. "I’ll go check on Calen first."
