Now reading: Chapter 43: Echoes Of The System from I Built a Safe Zone in the Dead World, a Horror novel by Vishesh1.

The night after the Hunter fell did not bring peace—it brought clarity, and clarity was far more dangerous than fear. The base stood intact, stronger than before, but no one inside believed they had won anything permanent. Arata Kurozawa stood at the highest accessible point within their structure, looking out over the broken city that stretched endlessly into darkness. The wind moved through shattered buildings, carrying distant echoes that no longer felt random. Everything felt connected now, as if every movent, every sound, every shift in the environnt belonged to a larger design. The Hunter had confird it. The Colossus had proven it. And the system had warned them clearly—they were not just surviving inside chaos. They were inside sothing structured, sothing evolving alongside them.

Behind him, footsteps approached quietly. Airi. He didn’t turn imdiately, but he knew it was her. Her presence had beco familiar, steady in a way that didn’t interrupt his focus but supported it. "...You’re not resting," she said softly as she stopped beside him. Arata didn’t respond right away. His gaze remained forward. "...Not yet," he said finally. Airi followed his line of sight, staring into the distance where the city faded into darkness. "...Do you think it’s watching us right now?" she asked. It wasn’t fear in her voice. It was curiosity mixed with unease.

"Yes," Arata said.

Simple, Certain.

Airi’s fingers tightened slightly around the edge of her sleeve. "...Then we should be stronger before it cos back," she said.

Arata finally turned his head slightly, glancing at her.

"We will be."

That answer settled sothing inside her, Not reassurance, But direction.

Below them, the base remained active despite the late hour. Reina continued organizing defensive zones, adjusting positioning based on new data from the Hunter fight. Miyu worked alongside her, marking structural upgrades and mapping potential expansion routes outward. Yuna sat on a stack of materials nearby, spinning her bat slowly in her hand, her usual restless energy still present but quieter now, more controlled. Kaede stood a short distance away from the others, leaning against a wall with her rifle resting at her side, her eyes scanning everything without appearing to focus on anything in particular.

But she noticed everything, She noticed how Airi stood close to Arata.

She noticed how Arata didn’t push her away.

And she noticed how Yuna—Was watching that too, Yuna’s bat stopped spinning for a second.

Then resud.

"...You’re staring again," Reina said without looking at her.

Yuna smirked slightly. "...Just thinking," she replied.

Miyu didn’t even look up. "...Your thought patterns are easy to predict."

Yuna chuckled. "...Then don’t analyze ."

Kaede spoke quietly from the side. "...She’s not wrong."

Yuna glanced at her. "...You’re starting to talk more," she said.

Kaede didn’t react. "...Only when necessary."

Yuna’s grin sharpened slightly. "...And is this necessary?"

Kaede looked toward Arata, Then toward Airi, Then back at Yuna.

"...Yes," she said, That answer landed, Not loudly, But clearly.

Yuna didn’t respond imdiately this ti.

Instead, she stood up, stretching her arms slightly as if shaking off the tension.

"...Whatever," she muttered.

But it wasn’t nothing, Airi noticed, Of course she did.

Her gaze dropped slightly for a mont before she looked forward again.

The system flickered.

[ SYSTEM STABILITY: 82% ]

[ CORE FUNCTIONS RESTORING ]

[ NEW FEATURE UNLOCKED: BASE MANAGENT SYSTEM ]

Miyu stopped instantly.

"...That’s new," she said.

Reina turned slightly. "Explain."

Arata’s eyes narrowed as the interface expanded.

[ BASE MANAGENT SYSTEM ACTIVATED ]

[ CURRENT BASE LEVEL: 1 ]

[ AVAILABLE UPGRADES: DEFENSE / SURVEILLANCE / RESOURCE PRODUCTION ]

[ REQUIRENT: MATERIALS ENERGY CORES ]

Yuna’s grin returned imdiately. "...Now we’re talking," she said.

Airi looked surprised. "...We can upgrade the base?"

"Yes," Miyu replied, her tone sharpening with interest. "...This changes everything."

Reina crossed her arms. "It also ans the system expects long-term survival."

Kaede added quietly, "...Or long-term conflict."

That was more accurate.

Arata looked at the options.

Defense, Surveillance, Resources, All necessary, All limited.

"We prioritize defense," he said.

No hesitation.

Reina nodded. "Agreed." Miyu added, "...Then surveillance. We need early warning systems."

Yuna smirked. "...And resources so we don’t starve while fighting everything."

Airi smiled slightly. "...So... all of them?"

Miyu shook her head. "...Not at once. We don’t have enough materials yet."

Kaede pushed off the wall slowly. "...Then we get more," she said.

Simple, Direct.

Yuna grinned. "...Exactly."

Arata nodded once, "We move at first light."

The decision settled instantly.

But before anyone could relax—The system flickered again, Stronger this ti.

[ ALERT: SIGNAL DETECTED ]

[ SOURCE: UNKNOWN HUMAN SURVIVOR ]

Airi’s eyes widened. "...Another survivor?" she said, Reina frowned slightly. "Location?"

The system displayed coordinates, Close, Too close.

Miyu’s expression shifted slightly. "...That’s within our extended periter."

Yuna’s grin faded into sothing more serious. "...So either they’re lucky..." she said.

Kaede finished the thought.

"...Or they’re not alone."

Silence followed, Because they all understood what that ant.

Arata spoke, "We check it."No hesitation.

Airi nodded imdiately. "...We can’t leave soone out there."

Yuna glanced at her. "...You’re getting bold," she said.

Airi smiled slightly. "...I’m learning."

Kaede watched that exchange carefully, Then looked at Arata.

"...If it’s a trap?" she asked, Arata answered without pause.

"Then we break it."That was enough.

The next morning ca faster than expected, the group already prepared before the sun fully rose. The air felt colder, sharper, carrying that sa underlying tension that had not left since the Hunter’s appearance. The team moved out again, this ti not just as survivors gathering resources, but as a unit with a clear objective. Formation tighter. Movents cleaner. Awareness higher.

As they approached the coordinates, the environnt changed subtly. The buildings were more intact here, less destroyed, which ant more places to hide—but also more places for sothing to wait.

Miyu raised her hand slightly. "...Close," she said.

Reina adjusted her aim, Yuna rolled her shoulder, Kaede moved above again, Airi stayed close.

Arata stepped forward.

And then—They heard it, A sound, Not a growl, Not a scream, A voice.

"...Help..."

Soft, Weak, Human.

Airi’s expression changed instantly. "...She’s there," she said.

Yuna narrowed her eyes slightly. "...Too easy," she muttered.

Kaede’s voice ca from above. "...No movent around. But that doesn’t an safe."

Arata moved forward anyway, Carefully, Slowly.

And then—They saw her., A girl.

Sitting against a wall, her clothes torn but not destroyed, her breathing uneven, her eyes half-open as if barely conscious.

Airi stepped forward imdiately. "...Hey," she said gently. "Can you hear ?"

The girl looked up slightly.

Her eyes—Sharp, Too sharp.

"...You ca," she said,

Yuna’s grip tightened instantly, "...Yeah," she muttered. "Definitely not normal."

The girl stood, Too easily Too smoothly.

Her posture straightened, her expression shifting completely from weak to calm in a single motion.

"...Good," she said.

And then—The ground behind her moved, Multiple shadows shifted, Not random, Not slow, Controlled.

Reina’s voice sharpened instantly. "Ambush."

Miyu added, "...Multiple signatures. High density."

Kaede’s tone dropped. "...We’re surrounded."

The girl smiled slightly.

"...Welco," she said.

Arata’s eyes narrowed, Not fear, Not surprise, Understanding.

Because this—Wasn’t coincidence. This was planned , And the one behind it—Had just made their move.
