Chapter 749: Power of the Forgotten Hero Part II
[A/N: I updated the last chapter with a few changes. Most of which is still the same. You can re-read if you like, but not much has changed.]
She could feel the power radiating from him, a presence that seemed to press the very air around them. It was different from the power radiating from Jack Kaiser.
Jack’s presence was overwhelming, omnipresent, impossible to ignore. But Ren’s presence was something else entirely.
It was focused, concentrated, a blade of pure force that existed with absolute precision.
”You are all in a cage right now,” Ren said, his voice still carrying that absolute monotone quality as he continued to regard Nexia with unwavering focus.
“The space around you has been severed and folded. You exist within boundaries that I have created using my blade. The air around you is no longer continuous. The ground beneath you is no longer stable. Reality itself has been restructured to contain you within a space that you cannot escape.”
He paused, allowing his words to settle into the consciousness of every dragon still alive on the barren wasteland.
”Running is the only quick death I will give you,” Ren continued, his gaze finally shifting away from Nexia to enpass the entire assembled force. “Any other form of resistance will result in prolonged suffering that exceeds your capacity to endure. I have the ability to cut you into pieces so small that you will spend hours dying. I have the ability to sever every nerve ending in your body one by one while keeping you conscious. I have demonstrated my power. Now you will acknowledge the reality of your situation.”
His words hung in the air like a pronouncement from a God.
”The Soul Warden will determine your fate,” Ren continued, his blue eyes maintaining their absolute flatness. “I am merely his instrument of execution. But if you want to surrender, I will take all your wings as payment for wasting my time.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
No dragon moved. The reality of their situation had crystallized in their consciousness with the force of absolute certainty. Every dragon understood that the only viable path forward was surrender.
Nexia’s mind was already moving through the calculations of survival. The mathematical elegance of submission was being clear to her.
The wings were payment, an acknowledgment of defeat, a physical manifestation of the hierarchy that had been demonstrated beyond question.
They were no longer fighting for victory. They were no longer fighting for honor or status or any of the traditional measurements of draconic worth.
They were fighting for the right to exist at all.
’Surrender. He wants us to surrender. The wings are payment, an acknowledgment of our defeat, a physical manifestation of the hierarchy that has been demonstrated. We are not creatures anymore. We are prisoners, and our wings are the ransom demanded for continued existence.’
Khorne, the other ancient dragon whose presence had anchored the Herald’s mand, watched the remains of Singe hit the ground and opened his mouth to protest the fate that had just befallen his oldest panion.
He refused to accept the quiet mutilation being offered.
”We can…” Khorne began, his voice booming across the wasteland. But reading the absolute, unyielding finality in Ren’s posture, Khorne cut his own words short, abandoning negotiation for a desperate gamble.
Turning sharply away from the formation, Khorne unleashed a burst of speed, attempting to flee across the sky in a pletely different trajectory.
But Ren didn’t even turn to look, nor did he swing his blade. He didn’t need to.
Echo Strike had already left the temporal ghosts of his previous attacks suspended in the air from the rapid executions of Boreas and Singe.
In his panic to escape, Khorne flew directly into the coordinates of those dormant spatial wounds.
The moment his massive frame crossed the threshold, his body made contact with the first echo.
Its wing separated at the shoulder joint.
The creature attempted to alter its trajectory mid-air to dodge the invisible field of spatial disruption, but the momentum of its flight only dragged it deeper into the trap.
The second echo manifested directly in his path. Another section of Khorne’s body was severed.
Then the third echo.
Then the fourth.
The ancient dragon was shredded into hundreds of smaller pieces, each one separated with perfect geometric precision by the repeating temporal ghosts of Ren’s attack.
Flesh, bone, and ancient scales shattered through the air, creating a cloud of biological matter that seemed to have substance and weight despite being dispersed across vast distances.
The fragments rained down across the barren wasteland like grotesque precipitation, a testament to the absolute power differential between the creature that had attempted resistance and the entity that had prevented it.
Each piece was cut so precisely that the dragon’s body looked like tear-shaped gemstones that rained from above.
Ren’s eyes remained locked on Nexia’s as the final pieces of Khorne struck the ground.
The remaining dragons progressively discontinued their objections. Their mouths moved as if to vocalize, yet no sound was produced.
Their talons clenched the stone and earth, creating physical manifestations of the terror consuming their consciousness.
Besides Nexia, the only other surviving lieutenants left standing were Malicia, the copper fire-affinity dragon, and Skatha, the heavy earth-affinity lieutenant remained entirely motionless.
Their wings extended and retracted in reflexive motions born of the primal desire to flee, yet neither creature actually attempted to execute escape. All the others were gone.
The choice had bee clear. Immediate death for those who resisted. Survival through submission for those who acknowledged reality.
Malicia and Skatha shifted their positioning slightly, their movements tight with the psychological chaos consuming them.
Malicia’s copper scales burned with a restless, volatile heat, her golden eyes flashing with the weight of centuries of dominion.
To her right, Skatha’s substantial and imposing figure appeared firmly rooted to the stone, her actions measured yet visibly strained by the demands imposed on her.
They exchanged a glance, a munication that transcended words, a recognition passing between them that was part defiance, part desperation, part something deeper that touched on the fundamental nature of dragonkind itself.
”This is not acceptable,” Malicia spat, her voice carrying the heat of her affinity and the particular friction of a creature unaccustomed to bending. “We are dragons. We do not surrender our wings. We do not bend before creatures who are fundamentally inferior to us. This is the violation of everything we are. This is the desecration of everything our species has built across millennia! Typhoon would never allow this. The Dragon King would never permit a creature to humiliate us in this manner.”
Skatha remained silent, but her massive body shuddered with the effort of restraint. Her talons dug deeper into the stone, carving jagged furrows as her golden eyes locked on Ren, desperately calculating whether the risk of immediate death might be preferable to the eternal shame of crawling across the earth like a lesser beast.
Nexia turned her massive, silver head to face them. Her wind and earth affinity gave her the perceptual acuity to read the minute tremors in their bodies, the subtle shifts in their emotional states, and the frantic frequency of their breathing.
”He is doing this precisely because we are dragons,” Nexia said, her voice cutting through the tension like a blade forged from death itself. “This is not random cruelty. This is not a tactical decision designed to incapacitate us. This is a demonstration of absolute superiority specifically targeted at what we are and what we represent.”
She paused, letting the bitter reality sink in.
”Every dragon assembled here has spent centuries understanding that our power defines us. Our ability to fly is not just a physical capability. It is the foundation of our identity, our dominion, our supremacy over all other creatures in this world. Ren understands this. He prehends what your wings mean to you. And that is precisely why he is taking them.”
