Chapter 1265: 874 thanks for the reward! Seeking monthly votes!

“Hey, Jiang Chen, why haven’t you left yet?”

Opening the door and walking inside, Fang Weiguo discovered that the young man who was supposed to leave yesterday was still sitting in his ho.

Pan Hui was cooking in the kitchen.

“I missed the train when I went to the station yesterday.”

Missed the train?

Fang Weiguo hadn’t expected this. He found the explanation sowhat… unusual, but didn’t dwell on it too much.

“It didn’t cause any trouble, did it?”

He walked over and sat down.

Tis had changed.

In the Capital City, their entire family had personally visited Jiang Chen’s company, so even though Jiang Chen said he was only staying for a day before leaving, they hadn’t asked him to stay longer.

“It’s not a big deal.”

“That’s good.”

“Dad, where did you go?”

“Nothing much, just sat at the neighborhood committee for a bit.”

“What were you doing at the neighborhood committee?”

Fang Qing sounded puzzled.

“What else? Asked about the demolition plans.”

Jiang Chen glanced over and chuckled, “Uncle Fang, hasn’t there been talk of demolition ever since I was in college?”

Everyone says being a ‘rich second generation’ is no match for being a ‘demolished second generation.’

Examples of people striking it rich and drastically changing their fortunes due to demolition are commonplace, and at one point even beca a “trend of the era.”

When the houses are torn down, Pallala appears.

It’s undeniable.

Becoming a “demolition household” truly represents the most hopeful chance for ordinary folks to transform their lives.

This laid-off workers’ compound has a history of at least thirty or forty years, and the quality control back then was nowhere near as strict as now. Many buildings have already beco dangerous structures. The Fang Family’s and Jiang Family’s building, for instance, has its exterior walls shedding more than half of their layers, and coupled with Sha City’s push for old town redevelopnt focused on cultural tourism, such worker compounds layered with the dust of history should have long been flattened.

It wasn’t just during his college years—Jiang Chen had frequently heard rumors about the compound being demolished back when he was in high school. The entire neighborhood had been eagerly waiting for the announcent, but who knew they’d keep waiting until today.

“Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on—it’s all thunder but no rain, never any actual progress.”

“You’re still hoping? If it was ant to be demolished, it would’ve been done long ago. Why would it drag on until now?”

Pan Hui brought out a plate of fish, likely the two fish she had bought at the market yesterday, now nobly sacrificed.

“You can’t say that.”

Fang Weiguo countered, “This ti there seems to be so real hope. I talked with Director Zou, and he said people should be coming to asure the area soon.”

Pan Hui chuckled.

“I’ve heard that line countless tis before. It’s not like they’ve never asured the area before—why asure it again? It’s probably just for show, pretending to do sothing, but ultimately leading nowhere.”

“Then why would the governnt try to fool us ordinary people?” Fang Weiguo asked.

“How would I know? Either way, I’m not holding my breath. What’s wrong with living here?”

After that, Pan Hui went back into the kitchen.

“Look at your mom, always content with the status quo. She’s lived here for decades and still isn’t tired of it.”

“It just proves Aunt Pan is a loyal and sentintal person.”

Jiang Chen chid in.

Before Fang Weiguo could respond, Pan Hui’s voice ca from the kitchen, “Learn a thing or two from Little Jiang.”

Fang Weiguo hesitated mid-sentence, raising his hand to point at Jiang Chen, smiling without replying. He probably wanted to call Jiang Chen a bootlicker but chose to hold his tongue.

“Dad, our place is so small—even if it does get demolished, we wouldn’t gain much.”

Fang Qing’s remark was quite practical. From how audibly the conversations in the living room traveled to the kitchen, it was clear how small the Fang Family’s place was—no more than seventy square ters in total. Of course, that was expected; it was, after all, decades-old employee housing.

“Not gain much? At least we’d get to live in a new apartnt, right? No elevator—it’s just too inconvenient. Plus, how many tis have the stairway lights broken? It’s unsafe to climb up at night.”

Fang Weiguo said, “I’m not looking to take undue advantage of the governnt. Just let them give a place equivalent to our area. It’s unlikely they’d offer a unit of exactly the sa size, but any extra space—we can pay for it. Jiang Chen, don’t you think your Uncle Fang’s idea makes sense?”

“Uncle Fang makes reasonable points.”

Jiang Chen nodded, skillfully playing the neutral card to please everyone.

“Dad, just because you think that way doesn’t an others think the sa. How many households live in the compound? You might not make excessive demands, but can you guarantee others won’t?”

Fang Weiguo was montarily speechless.

Fang Qing continued, “Policies have changed, Dad. The focus now is on renovation, not demolition. Hoping to move into a bigger apartnt—it’s unrealistic.”

Fang Weiguo pondered. He probably realized his daughter made valid points and let out a sigh. “Ah, could it really be like your mom said—that it’s just not ant to be for us? Back when demolition was all the rage, it didn’t happen here. Now, just as it seems about to happen, the policy changes.”

“Dad, the national budget isn’t limitless. Every demolition-induced fortune for residents ans a strain on governnt finances. If you really want a new ho, do you have to rely on demolition for it? I can go out and earn money.”

Actually, Fang Qing forgot there was an easier route—selling her Maserati Quattroporte. In Sha City, buying a house outright wouldn’t be a problem.

“I’m not rushing you out to work, girl. Don’t worry, even though I don’t have much ability, your dowry has long been prepared—you don’t need to worry.”

Fang Qing smiled wryly. “Dad, what are you talking about? Did I even ntion anything about my dowry?”

“Dinner’s ready.”

Pan Hui brought out the dishes.

“Let’s eat, let’s eat.”

Fang Weiguo stood up.

“Oh, right, when I was at the neighborhood committee earlier, I heard so big news.”

During dinner, Fang Weiguo casually ntioned it.

Pan Hui ignored him, instead picking out food for her daughter. “Jiang Chen, you eat too.”

Jiang Chen smiled and nodded, seeming curious as he played the diplomatic card. “Uncle Fang, what’s the news?”
