Now reading: Chapter 179: New Contact? from I Have a Modern Weapon Gacha System in the Zombie Apocalypse, a Sci-fi novel by Tiara123.

The sea breeze moved quietly across the destroyer’s deck while recovery crews continued cutting apart sections of the dead Kraken in the distance.

The operation was nearly finished.

Several tow barges now carried detached tentacles secured beneath reinforced chains while sealed biohazard containers containing tissue samples, armored growths, and parasite-like pods were already being transferred into storage compartnts aboard the cruiser.

The atmosphere across the task group had relaxed slightly.

Not completely.

But enough that sailors finally started speaking normally again after hours of nonstop tension and combat.

So crewn stood along the rails staring at the floating corpse.

Others smoked quietly near the stern sections while damage control teams repaired twisted railings and deck impacts left by the Kraken’s attacks.

The ocean itself had cald.

For now.

Ryan leaned against the railing beside Adrian while watching one of the recovery boats slowly move away from the corpse carrying another severed tentacle section.

"You know," Ryan muttered, "I thought the zombies on land were already nightmare fuel."

Adrian glanced toward him briefly.

"And now?"

Ryan looked back toward the massive carcass floating across the sea.

"Now I’m wondering what the hell else is down there."

Neither of them liked the answer to that question.

Then suddenly—

A loud alarm echoed from inside the destroyer.

BEEP.

BEEP.

BEEP.

The relaxed atmosphere vanished imdiately.

Crewn who had been standing around instantly moved again while nearby sailors grabbed radios and helts.

One officer sprinted out from the Combat Information Center.

"Captain!"

The destroyer captain imdiately turned.

"What is it?"

"Sonar contact!"

That imdiately got Adrian’s attention.

The captain frowned.

"Biological?"

The officer shook his head quickly.

"No, sir. Different acoustic profile."

The captain imdiately moved toward the bridge.

"Let’s go."

Adrian and Ryan followed close behind.

Inside the Combat Information Center, the atmosphere had already changed back into combat readiness. Sonar operators worked rapidly across their consoles while tactical officers updated the main display screen.

The mont Adrian entered, he noticed sothing imdiately.

The sonar return looked nothing like the Kraken.

It was smaller.

Much smaller.

And more importantly—

It moved consistently.

Captain Weber’s submarine was already transmitting updated data from below the surface.

One of the sonar operators looked toward the captain.

"Contact first appeared approximately eighteen kiloters northwest of the task group."

"Depth?"

"One hundred seventy ters."

"Movent pattern?"

The operator hesitated briefly.

"...Steady."

That alone changed the mood inside the compartnt.

Biological entities moved irregularly.

This contact did not.

The tactical display updated again.

A clean underwater track line now appeared across the map.

Captain Weber’s voice suddenly crackled through the communications speakers from beneath the sea.

"Fleet command, this is Weber. We are detecting possible subrged vessel."

The room went quiet.

Ryan frowned slightly.

"Subrged vessel?"

Captain Weber continued.

"Acoustic signature resembles submarine propulsion."

That imdiately made several officers exchange looks.

Adrian stepped closer toward the display.

"You’re sure?"

"Not fully," Weber admitted. "But it does not match biological movent."

The sonar operator aboard the destroyer imdiately added more information.

"Contact noise profile includes chanical harmonics."

That confird it further.

Machinery.

Propulsion.

Not flesh.

Not tentacles.

A submarine.

Ryan looked toward Adrian.

"You think soone else survived?"

Adrian remained silent for a mont.

That possibility had always existed.

The world was devastated, yes.

But not every military on Earth would have vanished completely.

Especially naval assets.

Submarines were among the few military systems designed specifically to survive catastrophic global war.

A nuclear submarine could remain hidden underwater for months without surfacing.

If any nation retained surviving military elents after the apocalypse—

Submarines would be among them.

The destroyer captain imdiately began issuing orders.

"All vessels to combat readiness condition one."

"Aye, Captain."

"Activate anti-submarine warfare tracking."

"Deploy additional sonar buoys."

The fleet imdiately shifted posture again.

The SH-60 Seahawk helicopter launched once more from the flight deck carrying dipping sonar equipnt while the destroyers adjusted formation around the recovery zone.

The dead Kraken was suddenly no longer the biggest concern.

Captain Weber’s submarine maintained distance while silently shadowing the unknown contact beneath the Philippine Sea.

Inside his command compartnt, tension had beco extrely focused now.

"Contact maintaining course," the sonar operator reported.

"Speed?"

"Approximately eighteen knots."

That further confird it.

Too consistent for marine life.

Captain Weber crossed his arms tightly.

"Any active sonar?"

"Negative."

"So they’re hiding too."

That made everyone aboard the submarine more cautious.

Another submarine down there ant uncertainty.

And uncertainty underwater was dangerous.

The communications officer looked toward Weber.

"Sir, no known allied submarine signatures match the contact."

The captain nodded slowly.

Which ant one thing.

It wasn’t theirs.

Above the surface, Adrian continued watching the tactical display carefully.

The unknown submarine moved steadily through the deeper waters northwest of the task group.

Not charging them.

Not fleeing either.

Just moving.

Ryan finally spoke quietly.

"You think they know we’re here?"

Adrian answered honestly.

"If they’re military?"

He looked toward the display again.

"Then yes."

One of the sonar officers suddenly stiffened slightly.

"Captain..."

"What?"

"We’re getting clearer acoustic returns now."

The officer adjusted several filters before routing the sound through the compartnt speakers.

At first, only low underwater noise echoed through the room.

Then slowly—

A distinct chanical rhythm beca audible.

Deep rotating machinery.

Propeller cavitation.

Reactor hum.

The destroyer captain narrowed his eyes.

"That’s definitely a submarine."

Another officer imdiately began comparing the acoustic signature against remaining naval databases stored within the fleet systems.

Several tense seconds passed.

Then the officer’s expression changed.

"...Sir."

The captain looked toward him imdiately.

"What?"

The officer swallowed once.

"I think we have a match."

Everyone in the compartnt focused on him now.

The officer enlarged one of the database comparisons beside the sonar waveform.

"Acoustic profile closely resembles Type 094 ballistic missile submarine configuration."

Ryan blinked.

"What the hell is that?"

Adrian answered before the officer could.

"A Chinese nuclear submarine."

The room beca quieter after that.

Because suddenly this situation beca far more complicated.

A surviving Chinese nuclear submarine ant surviving military personnel.

Possibly ard with ballistic missiles.

Possibly carrying nuclear weapons.

And right now, it was sowhere beneath the sa ocean as them.

The destroyer captain imdiately looked toward Adrian.
