Though we didn't reach 3k, here's the bonus anyway : )
..
No quotes today, just that after years of avoiding swimming, I finally overca it and went for my first swimming lesson. And yeah, it was scary as hell at first, I felt like I was going to be swept away. Every movent was filled with fear, but I'm happy to say I've overco that to so extent. Though I'm not quite there yet, it's still a good step forward, I think? Sorry for the rant, lol. Anyway, enjoy the chapter.
...
After that, Carl waved his hand and opened the activity interface for Trial of Glory.
The activity interface was made extrely gorgeous. Carl had no idea whether Toyama had finally put in so real effort, or if he had simply skimped on the Contract Stone rewards from filler events in later versions.
In short, the theoretical Contract Stone rewards from the Trial of Glory gaplay reached a staggering 16,000. A full hundred pulls' worth of Contract Stones!
Most mobile ga players would probably be fooled the mont they saw such generous Contract Stone rewards.
Thus, the promotion for version 1.2 of Oath was, "Get a hundred pulls just by playing!"
Then, the official Oath team was generous for once, though Carl did not know whether it was genuine generosity or if they were just looking for paid posters to help promote it.
The official Oath team held a Battle of Champions event.
Within a limited ti, the player with the highest ranking score would receive a $42,000 cash prize, along with the exclusive title and avatar of Glory Champion.
Second place would get $28,000, third place would get $14,000, and so on.
It was basically the sa as moving the ranking rewards from the Extre Abyss here, with diamond avatar fras, na cards, and other rewards all included.
On the other hand, Carl clicked an option in the far corner of the Trial of Glory interface called Switch to Villager Mode.
After enabling this option, the gorgeous Trial of Glory interface instantly vanished, replaced by an extrely simple yet very warm interface.
Villager Mode did not have nearly as many Contract Stone rewards, but Elysium had mischievously allowed Villager Mode to calculate ranking points.
Simply put, after successfully evacuating in Villager Mode, one could compete for ranking points against the main players of Oath.
But no matter how you looked at it, Villager Mode was much harder.
After all, combat thods in Villager Mode were extrely limited. If one encountered main players of Oath, they would most likely have to run, even though there were plenty of ways to counter people running away.
But if you could not outrun them and got caught, you were done for!
Carl was not quite sure how many players would ultimately use Villager Mode to experience Trial of Glory.
However, Elysium had set up a betting agreent for Carl with the official Oath team. Simply put, as long as players played Villager Mode for a certain amount of ti.
Carl would receive a portion of the revenue from Oath as a subsidy in paid Contract Stones.
This was actual revenue from Oath, just converted into the paid Contract Stones that Carl needed most right now.
Carl could also exchange it for real-world money if he wanted, but he did not need it at this stage, so he did not bother Elysium.
"Now, I'm just waiting for the first villager who wants to empty the City of Glory to appear."
While Carl was thinking this, Macchiato, Mio, and the others had already logged into the ga and returned to Netherworld Village.
This ti, Carl first focused his attention on Macchiato.
"Sophia! Did you miss ? It's been half a day."
After logging in, Macchiato could not wait to grab the hands of the hideout's housekeeper, Sophia, and shake them.
After Sophia underwent the first course of treatnt from the playtesters, her mutations had recovered slightly. At the very least, she had a human form now.
At present, she only had a rough human form. Although she had hands and feet, the two extra eyes were a bit creepy, but at least she no longer needed Carl's illusions to cover her up.
"Savior, during the ti you were away, the flashbangs and short-range teleportation devices you requested have been completed. Would you like to inspect them?"
Sophia served as the hideout manager.
For responsibilities like which hideout facilities players needed to upgrade, or which map they should go to next to search for resources, they could go directly to Sophia.
As the poster girl of the previous ga, Sophia was returning to her old profession with this job, and she handled it with ease.
"Finished so quickly? Let see."
Macchiato walked up to a device called the Omni-Synthesizer.
This was a major resource sink for players of Descent into Netherworld Village.
Basically, all the resources players scavenged could be brought to this machine for synthesis, conversion, manufacturing, and similar processes.
However, those useful items produced by the players were actually bought by Carl from the NPC free trade market.
At this stage, Carl did not have the ability to provide players with real base-building or village-building gaplay.
Things like the promised introduction of new NPCs were still limited to the original residents of Netherworld Village for now.
But being able to use these scavenged items to upgrade various hideout facilities and exchange them for more useful tools had already pushed Macchiato's motivation to the limit. To the point that when she logged in, she did not even want to play the actual main gaplay of the version, Trial of Glory. She only wanted to continue stripping Netherworld Village bare.
But the problem was...
"Where should I even use all these items? Have I been in professional teams for so long that I'm getting a little too privileged? I feel like I can breeze through the Titan Library map, the hardest one in Netherworld Village right now."
Macchiato glanced at her backpack, which was full of various boosts for movent speed, backpack slots, and early warnings.
On top of that, there were a ton of nifty little gadgets for running away when she encountered danger.
Even if she explored alone, the highest difficulty map in Descent into Netherworld Village could no longer satisfy her. She was a complete pro.
Facing Macchiato's boastful complaints, Carl thought.
Who told you guys to grind in there for nearly ten days without sleeping?
In these ten days, did any of you spend more than six hours offline each day?
Most of the playtesting teams had truly been hounding Carl, their guide, to explore maps day and night.
"No need to worry, Lady Macchiato. If you want a challenge, you can certainly co with to the City of Glory and give it a try."
After getting Carl's permission, Hasumi inford Macchiato of this surprising news.
"What?! I can go loot the City of Glory now?! I an, go to the City of Glory and grab all the good stuff?!"
When Macchiato learned that she could take the scavenging system from Descent into Netherworld Village to the City of Glory, the smile on her face beca truly wild and distorted.
Macchiato's current thought was probably.
Do you know how long I've been waiting for this day?
"Cough, of course. Our guide, Lord Carl, opened the path to the City of Glory yesterday."
Hasumi said this while glancing at Carl, who was standing nearby with his arms crossed.
Carl did not think it was a big deal, but Macchiato was so excited that she rushed over and grabbed his hands.
Even her cheeks looked a bit flushed. She was clearly very worked up.
"Praise Lord Carl! Long live the Cult of Carl! I'm sorry I hesitated between choosing the Saintess and you before! From now on, I will unconditionally support every decision Carl Agata makes!"
"There's no need to be so dramatic. It's just part of my job."
Carl felt that if a ga was going to operate long-term, it had to introduce content that interested players every once in a while.
"Alright! The pre-ga prayer ritual is over! Ti to empty the City of Glory!"
Macchiato rolled up her sleeves, preparing to lead Hasumi in their rat forms to scavenge the City of Glory, when she suddenly received a ssage. Once again, it was from Vengeful Blood, the president of the Do Alliance.
"The Do Alliance has decided to push for first place in the Battle of Champions event. Change your stream title to Targeting the Highest Score in Trial of Glory! and join us as our field reporter to grind points."
The Do Alliance also understood that they needed to use this new featured event of Oath to expand their influence, just like they did when competing for the Extre Abyss rankings.
It was a normal strategy to have a popular strear like Macchiato help with promotion while grinding points.
"Then, President, can I use Villager Mode to team up with you guys?" She quickly sent a ssage back.
Macchiato made a sorry gesture to Hasumi.
Work required her to possibly put off exploring the City of Glory with Hasumi for a little while.
"Villager Mode? What's that?"
Vengeful Blood was part of the group of players who had killed Carl. She had not unlocked Descent into Netherworld Village at all, let alone Villager Mode.
"Simply put, it's a mode where you sacrifice the combat strength of gacha pool characters in exchange for a massive amount of backpack capacity. Look, I have a full sixty slots now! I can carry so much!"
Macchiato finally found an opportunity to show off the results of her grinding to the big shots in the guild.
The backpacks of the main Oath players had around twenty slots, but they could also be upgraded.
Backpack capacity was probably one of the few ta-progression parts that Toyama insisted on keeping.
But Macchiato's backpack capacity, which was triple that of most players, would undoubtedly be a huge help in grinding points.
The ranking points for Trial of Glory included kill points, monster-slaying points, scavenging points, and so on. The value of scavenged materials would be counted toward the ranking score.
"That extra gaplay from Netherworld Village can actually affect the main ga? Alright then, try using Villager Mode," Vengeful Blood said.
Carl could actually see Macchiato's private ssages.
Originally, Carl wanted to speak up and warn her that teaming up in Villager Mode with main Oath players should be considered a bug.
Elysium's attitude was, if the official Oath team allowed it, then they could team up. If not, then they could not. It was all about fairness.
But since the official Oath team had not made a statent yet, players from the two modes could indeed team up.
"Hasumi, I have work to do. I'll explore the City of Glory with you next ti."
Macchiato organized the various exploration tools in her backpack and, under Hasumi's watchful gaze, stepped onto the teleportation array to the City of Glory.
The matching chanism for Trial of Glory was primarily based on four-person squads, and there were also different ranks.
However, one very sinister part was that starting from the highest Champion rank, players were only allowed to play in solo queue mode.
Besides that, the official Oath team naturally added gacha pool characters as companions, giving socially anxious players so extra options.
But the main consciousnesses of the gacha pool characters certainly could not attend to everyone.
Except for a few whale players, the gacha pool characters played by Secondary Consciousnesses would turn into clumsy bots.
So during this ti, Carl had been urging Hasumi to invest all the earned Sacred Contract Stones into improving the strength of her main consciousness and the intelligence of her Secondary Consciousnesses, so she could deal with the upcoming enthusiastic players.
And Macchiato successfully joined a team composed of three top players from the Do Alliance in Villager Mode!
"Is this the big city?"
Macchiato lifted a manhole cover on a street corner in the City of Glory and climbed out, her eyes full of excitent.
"What's with this entrance animation?"
Another player from the Do Alliance could not help but comnt as they watched Macchiato climb out of the sewer.
"Oh, that's just how we people from Netherworld Village are."
Macchiato was now fully imrsed in her role. After putting the manhole cover into her backpack, she took out a pickaxe and began chipping away at the wall of a nearby building.
"Wait, wait, wait... The requirent for Trial of Glory is to scavenge high-value collectibles. Why are you chipping at the wall?"
Her teammate gradually realized sothing was wrong with Macchiato's state of mind.
"You wouldn't know, boss! I just did a survey, and the Sacred White Stone building material in this wall is the base material for upgrading our village's buildings to level two! Don't worry! I'm only digging up this one wall. It won't take long!"
Macchiato was actually serious.
Carl felt that Macchiato was already one of the more normal players from Descent into Netherworld Village.
Other playtesters, when entering the City of Glory in Villager Mode, would probably be so excited they could not sleep, diving straight into an all-night hardcore grinding session.
(To be continued.)
