Yara Quincy slamd her foot on the gas, trying to make up for that lost second.
But then, a figure suddenly appeared on the crosswalk...
The color drained from Yara Quincy’s face. "Move! Get out of the way!" she scread.

A piercing screech of brakes tore through the air, followed by the sound of skidding tires. Then, with a loud BANG, her car crashed into a sedan that had been driving normally in the southbound lane.
In that instant, the world fell silent.
The child who had run into the road stood frozen on the spot. He was only four or five and didn’t understand what was happening. All he knew was that a car had nearly hit him, but then, for so reason, it had suddenly swerved and collided with another one.
Just then, the child’s mother rushed out. She snatched him up and carried him back to safety, overjoyed at his narrow escape but also seething with fury. She gave his bottom several hard smacks.
"You little brat! I told you not to run off! You almost got killed, do you realize that? If you died, what would I do? You’re my whole world, boo hoo... Don’t you ever run off again! If you do, I’ll break your legs!"
A crowd of onlookers began to gather...
「Over ten minutes later, the ambulance finally arrived.」
Half an hour after that, Mrs. Quincy got a call from the hospital and rushed over imdiately.
Yara was still in the operating room, her condition unknown.
The Good Samaritan who had brought Yara to the hospital, a man in his thirties, was waiting outside the operating room. When he saw a family mber arrive, he imdiately walked over. "Hello, are you the patient’s family?"
"I’m her mother. What happened? What’s wrong with my Yara?"
Recalling the horrific crash, the man’s tone was sharp. "Your daughter’s car suddenly skidded into oncoming traffic and hit another car. She injured the other driver, and he’s in surgery, too."
Mrs. Quincy didn’t care about anyone else; her entire being was focused on her daughter. "But what about my Yara?" she asked urgently. "What was her condition when they brought her in?"
The man frowned. "Her leg was pinned in the wreckage, and she’d lost a lot of blood. No one else was willing to bring her to the hospital, so I did. Ma’am," he continued, "I’m going to be blunt, so please don’t take offense. The other driver is completely innocent. Seeing as you’re dressed in designer clothes, you’d better start thinking about compensation. Your daughter is almost certainly going to be held fully responsible for this accident."
"My Yara will certainly pay whatever compensation is required; she wouldn’t try to avoid her responsibilities. But right now, I’m in no state to think about that. Oh... thank you for bringing her here."
Though the gratitude was belated, the man accepted it. His tone softened. "All right. There’s nothing more for to do here. I should be going."
"Thank you," Mrs. Quincy said again.
The man waved a hand and turned to leave.
Mrs. Quincy paced back and forth in front of the operating room doors, her heart lodged in her throat.
After what felt like an eternity, the operating room doors suddenly opened. A doctor rushed out and ca to a stop in front of her. "What is your relation to the patient?"
"I’m her mother. Doctor, how is my daughter?"
"The patient needs an amputation. I need you to sign this."
"An... an amputation?" The words struck Mrs. Quincy like a bolt of lightning, and the color drained from her face in an instant.
The doctor spoke rapidly. "We can’t save her left leg. The longer we wait, the greater the risk to her life. Please sign as quickly as possible."
"Doctor, is there no other choice?"
"Her life or her leg. You choose."
"Okay... I’ll sign. I’ll sign!"
With tears streaming down her face, Mrs. Quincy signed her na.
