I was already moving. Frostfang in my right hand, a chain coiling around my left forearm, and my legs carried forward so fast that the ground cracked under my feet.
The Chaleon’s eyes locked onto and its tongue lashed out, that sa whip-strike that had thrown backward before, the one that had nearly ripped the sword from my hands.
I sidestepped it.
Not barely. Not desperately. I sidestepped it like it was slow.
The tongue cracked the air beside and carved a line through the dirt where I’d been standing. But I was already past it, already inside its range, and Frostfang ca down on the foreleg that was braced against the tree.
The blade bit deep. Frost crackled along the wound and the Chaleon scread, releasing its grip on the trunk as its foreleg buckled. The tree groaned and tilted. I pulled the blade free and pivoted, driving a kick into its jaw with enough force that I felt the impact rattle up through my hip and into my spine.
The Chaleon’s head whipped upward. Its body followed, peeling away from the tree and crashing through the canopy in a shower of burning leaves and shattered branches.
I stood there, breathing hard, and looked down at my own legs.
