Of course, something was inherently wrong with me. The strange part was that I could not bring myself to care enough to find out what.
My mind sat under a fog, and my body felt ready to burst from the surge of energy flooding into every corner of it, pressing against my skin from the inside like water against a dam.
And because of it, I was sure. I would kill that bastard today.
At the very least, for once in my life, I would reach someone responsible for the death of someone I cherished.
That meant Levi too. How could I ever forgive him? If this was how he chose to reveal himself and his dream, then he deserved the same blame and the same hatred I gave the church.
For a moment, I might have understood the pain in Nisha’s heart, but that only made me resent her more. How could she have stayed by his side and defended him, knowing it was his fault she had bee what she was?
“Oh oh oh… kid, would you look at that! Uio!”
Another creature materialized out of thin air, standing on the sky itself, wrapped in a dirty grey cloak whose tattered edges stirred in the wind ing off the ice below.
“Can you not call my name? It’s irritating when it es from your mouth.”
The creature that had killed Tristan jabbed a hand toward me.
“Look at the kid! Can you feel it?”
The cloaked one, Uio, turned to me. He carried his chin high beneath the hood, and his eyes glowed white like searing metal. Then his expression went blank.
“Infinity Overdrive? This bastard is tearing into the Spirit River without that shameful act.”
The other nodded along excitedly, rocking on the air like a man who had just dug a priceless mineral out of mon stone.
Then Uio grinned.
“Oh, that spells it then… looks like our Lord will like this one. Capture him alive. I’m busy with the second gate.”
He said it with that same lift of the chin, and he was already thinning into the air.
Damn me if I let that happen.
I used Feather Step and ate the distance in an instant. Its range had grown at least fivefold, because I arrived between them before my own thought finished, cold snapping past my ears, and black flames crawled out of my hand in the shape of a curved blade, cleaving through the very air the man was vanishing into.
His gaze widened a beat too late, and he shoved himself backward with a jerk of his whole body.
The killer was shocked as well, his gaze lost for a moment.
“Ooohh? That was… the fastest I have ever seen anyone move. How did you cover such distance? I’m sure that is parable to Yvette’s speed.”
Even Uio was staring at me from where he had stopped, still dazed.
“I can’t believe this…”
I didn’t give a damn what either of them believed. I simply slid sideways through the air, and with the sword of writhing black flames in my hand, I cleaved down on the one closest to me. Tristan’s murderer.
But he grinned and snapped his hand out.
“You’re powerful, but your grit is not enough to harm me.”
The flames detonated against his skin and stopped dead in their tracks, guttering out the moment they met that pale flesh, as if the air had been snuffed clean out of them.
He looked at me, eyes glowing, and muttered.
“Rage is not guilt, little boy. Learn it.”
My stare stayed on him for a moment, and then I decided. I raised my head slowly and looked down on him from where I hung in the sky.
‘If he will not break from the outside, then I will make him crumble from within.’
At the same time, the other one shouted from where he stood, and our voices overlapped.
“Retta! Nooooo!!!”
“Choke.”
The word left my mouth carrying a heavy authority, and a vast amount of essence poured out of me all at once, parable to the peak of everything I had held before being drained dry. And almost immediately, a rush of new essence came flooding back in, wave after wave, humming in my fingertips.
The creature froze. His hands flew to his own neck and he glared at me, straining against something inside him that no longer answered to him.
“Tear. Tear. Tear. Tear.”
I manded his muscles and his blood vessels to rip themselves apart from within. It didn’t matter how durable his hide was. I would shred him from the inside out.
And the cost, however monstrous, didn’t matter, because the essence flowed back into me the instant it left.
For a moment, I felt infinite. As if my essence had no floor and no ceiling, and there was no limit to what I could truly do.
“You cretin!!”
Uio lunged at me, so I released Emperor’s Dominion and shaped it into a colossal hand of authority spread across the sky. It slammed down on him and drove him into the sheet of ice below, punching him through it in a geyser of white shards and down into the black water underneath.
Then, from behind me, a voice sounded.
“You vile bastard. You think such a weak attack will kill me? You fool.”
I turned to him, but he was not the one speaking. It was the snake coiled around his leg. It crawled all the way up his body and bit into his neck, shredding it, consuming the flesh in wet, unhurried mouthfuls.
Then the snake turned its glare on me.
“Although, never did I think I would have to face anyone using my real body this early.”
Its size swelled in an instant, and its bulk came down on the sheet of ice and shattered everything apart, and still it rose enormous enough to reach the sky where we floated, its scales pale as drowned skin.
“Retta. Be careful. You saw it now, didn’t you?”
The great pale snake hissed with a malicious grin.
“Of course, he won’t get me twice. Infinity Overdrive may give you a broken door to the Spirit Realm, but your body will break. It is still an overdrive nonetheless. Here I was wondering if I should give you a helping hand and knock you out of it. Now you just had to go and annoy me.”
I glared at him fair and square. And I vowed.
“Even if it takes dying here, today, I will kill you.”
