Darel heard a few sharp curses from behind him. His party mbers were seasoned and hardened adventurers. They'd survived enough battles to know fear and how to push through it.

But now faced with the relentless onslaught of these unnatural grey creatures even they were starting to fray at the edges. They weren't wounded badly yet. But Darel could feel the creeping truth that it was only a matter of ti.

They'd already fought more of the monsters than they could count. The attacks ca out of nowhere from deeper in the forest where the light barely touched. The mist hadn't fully closed in on their position so they still had so visibility.

They could spot the creatures before they lunged but that hardly made it easier. Watching those pale and twisted creatures skulk forward through the haze was terrifying enough.

Varn, the axe-wielding fightter, hacked through a vine with a grunt and clenched his jaw. His usual cocky deanor was gone. The smirk he wore when challenging the forest to test his strength had faded.

He always won his fights and ca out on top. But these grey things… they weren't right. The way they moved and stared at him… he could feel it in his bones that they really didn't belong to this world. And that fact alone unsettled him more than he would admit.

Varn was already thinking of retreating. He was sure the others were thinking it too. But no one said it out loud. Not because of pride — though there was that too — but because of two very real reasons. Darel and Yara would tear into them for it and more importantly, the pay was too good. Too good to give up on.

So they pressed on, holding onto the fragile belief that everything would be fine. That their protective amulets would keep the mist and other forest creatures at bay. And that if they just stayed cautious they'd survive.

Their movent had slowed so much from before. They crouched low now and creeping through the underbrush, hiding behind trees and bushes to avoid being spotted.

Every sound was treated like a threat and every shadow was a potential ambush. They knew they'd strayed far from the party they were supposed to be hunting but part of them had started to believe that group was already dead.

After all, these creatures seed to be everywhere, as if the whole forest had beco their nest.

Then ca another boom. A deep, distant explosion shook the trees again. This is the tenth one they'd heard. It echoed like a signal.

"It's still going on?" one of the party mbers whispered while frowning.

"Does that an Jan's group isn't dead yet?" another asked in a hushed voice.

"They're not weak, you know," soone else muttered back.

"I know," ca the reply. "But they've been pushing for a long ti… and they're escorting soone. That ans they're fighting and protecting that man. Their burden's heavier than ours."

That sobering thought silenced them all. They believed before that they might overpower Jan's group if it ca to a confrontation. But now, watching how those people had lasted this long in the heart of this cursed forest, doubt began to creep in.

Would they even stand a chance in a head-on fight?

"Don't waste breath on that," Darel growled from the front, turning just enough to fix them with a sharp and commanding glare. "Watch where you step. Finish the job. Then take the pay ho."

Those words cut through the rising unease like a knife.

The party fell quiet so they able to grounding themselves again. Yes, get the job done and get paid. If they stayed careful they could make it out of this nightmare alive and rich.

Yara suddenly raised her hand. Her fingers spread in a signal they all knew well. The entire party froze mid-step with weapons half-drawn, eyes scanning their surroundings with tense precision. No one spoke and eveyone held their breath.

Then Yara pointed ahead, her voice low but urgent.

"Another one appeared," she said. "This one is different, bigger."

Varn crept closer with his axe at the ready. His brows furrowed. "What do you an, different?" he asked, his voice laced with unease.

Yara didn't take her eyes off the shadows ahead. "Twice the size of the others. And its hands… they're massive. Like it was built to crush sothing with powerful strike."

A fresh curse slipped from soone's lips. The realization sank in heavy. There were still more types of these things. More shapes and definitely more threats.

"God damnit! How many kinds are there?" soone whispered harshly. No one answered.

Darel stepped forward slightly and gestured for everyone to lower their weapons.

"Stand down," he ordered. "The big one hasn't seen us yet."

Reluctantly, they obeyed, sinking back into the foliage, crouched low and silent. For a mont, all they heard was the eerie whisper of wind passing through twisted branches and the distant they hear the rhythmic thump of the massive creature's steps sowhere ahead.

But then…

Fwip-fwip-fwip.

A faint, rapid sound ca from behind. One of the fighters at the rear blinked and slowly turned to check just as sothing tore through the mist above the trees.

From the fog ca new horrors. Grey creatures again, but now with stretched slick and leathery wings. Their eyes glowing dimly green in the shadow. They swooped downward with unnatural grace with teeth bared and claws extended.

"Shit!" the rear guard — one of the spear-wielders — shouted in panic, stumbling back as the winged monstrosities dove toward them.

Steel rang out as blades were drawn. The forest exploded into chaos again.

Yara, the battle-Mage imdiately jumped high and reach the winged grey creatures. Her gauntlet flicker and she deliver a punch that hit the creature. It wall to the ground with a thud and the spear-wielder imdiately stab it.

But its not over for them because the giant now know about them. From the front Darel can see it approaching with slow steps because of its size.

Gritting his teeth, he ordered. "Run!"

So they ran.
