Chapter 147: Devoured
***
Staring at the body in front of , still twitching as it collapsed, not even getting the chance to ignite the Fire of Sin again, I gave a satisfied nod.
"Much quieter now."
And indeed it was.
3 heretics remained alive. Although they had surrounded, every single one of them was dead silent, faces plastered with disbelief, feet shuffling backward nonstop, until they'd put a fair distance between themselves and ... as if that would give them even the tiniest shred of safety.
I caught the emotion called fear flickering in their trembling eyes, and the corners of my lips curled up on their own.
These were people who had thrown away their lives, dead set on dragging down with them, yet now they were scared... just what exactly are you so afraid of?
Sothing sticky slid down the side of my face, a little itchy. I reached up to scratch at it, and after a few swipes realized the more I scratched the slicker it felt. I lifted my hand up to get a look... ah, all blood.
I just split soone's skull open with a hand chop a mont ago... totally forgot, heh.
From the corner of my eye I caught a wisp of white, luminous smoke, twisting as it drifted past my side, like a lone firefly cutting through the dark.
It seed to have floated out from the corpse at my feet... no, the corpse had turned to ash at so point without noticing, leaving behind only this wisp of smoke, as if silently testifying to the fact that he had once existed in this world.
Even that testimony faded away quickly. The smoke radiated a faint, gentle glow, circling around twice, then with a soft whoosh, it vanished into my chest.
"Mm..."
I closed my eyes, body trembling lightly, savoring that sensation of absolute bliss, then slowly opened them again a mont later. My dark pupils were hazy and languid, like they were about to drip.
...I need to change my sanitary pad.
Coming back to my senses, I looked over to find the 3 remaining heretics wearing expressions of sheer panic... ah, so that's what they were afraid of.
Could it be that the Gate of Truth knows what that wisp of light smoke actually ans?
Interesting...
I fixed my gaze with great curiosity on one of them, a middle-aged man with a beard.
He looked maybe not yet forty, and whether he had a family or kids I didn't know. I definitely hadn't t him before any of this, yet here he was with the others, coming to kill ... that made very curious.
"What do you all know?" I tilted my head and asked.
"Who are you..." the bearded man said, his voice carrying so complex emotion that felt sothing like resentnt.
"Pfft—"
Forgive , I couldn't hold back the laugh.
"Co on, you ca here to kill ! You were ready to throw your lives away, and now you're asking that, don't you find it hilarious?"
And with that I just stood there laughing to myself.
"Hehehe... hehehe..."
In the empty street, for a mont the only sounds were the crackling of burning flas and a girl's laugh ringing out like silver bells.
Too funny... why is it so funny... but he still hasn't answered my question... how dare he.
The mont that thought hit , I suddenly felt very unhappy. The amusent in my chest receded like a tide, and my expression instantly shifted from sunny to stormy.
"Let teach you... sothing."
Whoosh—
After the howling wind, my small figure had already moved right in front of the bearded man. A gust carrying dust swept into his face, sending his hair flying, yet he still hadn't reacted, his gaze was still fixed on the spot where I'd been standing just a mont ago.
The next instant, my hand clamped tightly around his left wrist.
"Dors!"
"Watch out—!"
"Ugh!"
The bearded man jolted in shock, his expression shifting rapidly, then suddenly hardened with vicious resolve. The short dagger gripped tight in his right hand swung high overhead, and with a savage glare he drove it straight down toward his own chest.
Boom.
In the crimson darkness, a flash of pale white light burst to life.
What followed was a wail that didn't sound like a human voice.
"Ahhh, ahh—! Ahhhhh!!!"
Dark, sinister black fire climbed up from the bearded man's burning left hand, racing up his arm at terrifying speed, swallowing his entire left arm in the blink of an eye.
He seed to be in trendous agony, his expression twisted into sothing grotesque in an instant. The dagger slipped from his grip, and I snatched it mid-air, swinging it clean across his left shoulder in one swift slash.
The bearded man's left arm fell away cleanly, the cut perfectly even, a thick surge of blood pouring from the wound.
I stepped back, quietly savoring his suffering, listening to his wretched wail.
This filled with excitent, with joy, so much joy that I couldn't help but laugh again.
"Hehehe... when soone asks you a question, you have 3 seconds to answer, otherwise you must accept punishnt, that's just common sense... understood? Old man."
The bearded man's body wouldn't stop trembling.
Because the cut had been tily, the black flas hadn't spread to the rest of him. But this was still very much a fatal wound, just not one that would kill him quite yet. The bearded man could no longer stand. He collapsed to his knees before , the stump gushing blood like a fountain, spraying nearly a ter across the ground. Within seconds, the stone slabs beneath his feet were soaked in crimson, the pattern painted by his blood, in my eyes, looked like a precious work of art.
I suddenly felt the weight in my right hand lighten, and when I looked down, the severed arm I'd been holding had turned completely to ash... no wisp of light smoke, it seed he had to actually die first.
I smiled softly and turned my gaze toward that face, now completely drained of color.
"Hey, where's your Fire of Sin? Why isn't it burning? Let see—"
The bearded man suddenly looked up. Like a starving lone wolf, he glared at with savage intensity, his bloodshot eyes burning red.
"Monster."
And then, strange, deeply unsettling sounds erupted from his entire body.
Gurgle... gurgle... crack...
"Ahh—!"
He lunged to his feet and wrapped his one remaining arm tight around , shouting at the top of his lungs: "Aiden! This thing isn't human! Run! Get the word out—!"
"Nobody's getting away."
As I spoke, countless tiny smoke serpents rose up from the ground beneath our feet.
The bearded man's expression turned to one of extre terror.
"This is..."
But that was all he could say.
The instant the Death Smoke touched him, the bearded man's body imdiately erupted in white mist, releasing a teeth-aching screech. And then he, along with the blood pooled on the ground, was eaten away entirely and reduced to drifting ash.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh—
A sudden rush of wind hit my ears. I turned around, another heretic had burst into flas and was charging straight at .
These people... rushing to die, no fun at all.
I gave my head a light shake, watching that person's silhouette swell and expand inside the Fire of Sin. I raised my forearm and flicked it casually, black smoke serpents shot forward with a howl, swallowing him along with the Fire of Sin whole.
Not even a scream.
A mont later, 2 wisps of light smoke seeped into my body.
"...Haah~"
I let out a long breath. My cheeks felt a little warm, my thighs rubbing together instinctively, then I turned my head toward the remaining figure that was trying to run.
"One left."
But it seed soone else was on their way here.
So annoying... my head is starting to hurt again... let's just wrap this up quickly.
Boom—!
Flas exploded from beneath my feet. Trailing a long dark tail of black, I skimd along the surface of the ground like a teor, blazing with blinding white light, and when I drew close to that fleeing figure, I cut sharply to the side and stepped directly into his path.
"I said you can't run, so why are you running? If you won't listen, you get punished... where is Abel?"
