Now reading: Chapter 258: Passing of Honor from I Will Be the Greatest Knight, a Fantasy novel by QueenFrieza.

There were resounding sounds of agreent throughout the small group Arthur spoke to. Everyone was eager to begin the knighting process. Even though it would only leave two apprentices, it ant that the dukedom was that much more protected with more knights. The ability to self-govern was a beautiful thing for many reasons.

"Then let us begin," Arthur responded to the agreent. "Using the power that His Majesty, King Alfred the Second, has given today, it is my pleasure to use a blade forged in the fires of the Sünstoian region in the north." He pointed towards the highest mountain. "On it, a permanent mark of soul protection has been engraved. I believe it’s sothing that could benefit each person here who is honored today. I know that a lot of you saw things beyond your wildest nightmares, but let’s work together to make Chemois sothing out of a dream. As we consider the hardship faced during the two-year monster war, I would like to take a mont to silently acknowledge the good n we lost. Listen to the silence and find a sign that they have successfully walked to the other side and wait for their brothers... and sisters, in a heaven that will make up for all the bad we faced in the realm of the living."

Suddenly, everything felt heavy as Arthur’s deep voice ceased, and every person standing there was forced to face the painful thoughts and harsh realities they experienced not more than half a year before. There were traumas they would always carry with them, and those who passed would always feel so close.

Particularly, Irene found it hard to cope with the mont as she grasped the handle of Leif’s sword and felt Felix’s elbow gently brush against hers as he silently told her that he was truly there for her through it all.

He noticed which blade she carried. It reminded him of the small red journal he kept in his pocket at all tis.

His gesture of support was enough to keep Irene’s tears from flowing.

What knocked her out of her thoughts the most was a hawk landing on the highest tower and cawing at them all below. Her eyes went to the raptor, and she knew she wasn’t the only person to find significance in that mont.

She couldn’t help feeling like it was a sign as her head lifted and she smiled faintly at the bird. So strong and beautiful.

She thought of a conversation she had with Leif where he wondered what it was like to fly like a bird. A lump ford in her throat, but she kept it together.

"Now give your attention to , and we will begin the passing of honor," Arthur explained. "As far as I’m aware, there are two today who will have this bestowed upon them. I would like to pass my honor to Sir Gunnar. With resounding permission from His Majesty, who agreed that your exemplary regard for the code of chivalry during battle was worth rewarding, I give you this dal and hope that you feel as if even a small part of your efforts have been acknowledged by the monarch."

From his belt, he pulled a golden cross connected to a dark red bow. He extended his hands and gestured for the knight he called on to step forward.

"I bestow upon you this honor that represents yourself as soone the King can trust to call on if the north ever cos close to falling again," Arthur explained. "You have done unimaginably well for soone who lacked the training required to take on the tasks that you have succeeded in."

He placed the necklace over Gunnar’s head and let the heavy cross fall against the man’s muscular chest. Those who were in the audience gave cheers of approval. All agreed that the knight deserved recognition for what he had done for the knighthood in the years since they lost Duke Arlen.

"Thank you, Arthur," Gunnar responded only loud enough for the knight to hear.

Arthur nodded and continued with the ceremony as Gunnar stepped aside.

"I would also like to announce that Sir Gunnar was His Majesty’s first choice in who ought to be considered for second in command for the Knights of Tenetium," Arthur announced. "But I understand that you have another idea."

There were looks of confusion as Sir Gunnar stepped forward once more, and he pulled a letter from a pouch at his waist.

"Yes, I have another idea of soone deserving to be the second in command," Sir Gunnar explained. "Unfortunately, the reality of battle is that when we lose our friends, we are then responsible for what happens to their items from that point forward. And when clearing Sir Eitan’s belongings, I couldn’t help looking at the final note he was writing to his cousin, King Alfred." The knight unfolded the paper. "This unfinished letter explains Eitan’s intention to pass his honor to his apprentice, Felix. I also believe that Felix will make a wonderful second in command for the knights if he agrees. I am late in my career and desire to remain here with apprentices, and hopefully, future apprentices. What Chemois needs is soone with younger insight and the desire to grow the duchy rather than the stagnancy I desire. Felix has been with the knighthood since he was a child, pulled from a pillaged village where he was the only remaining survivor."

All eyes went to Felix, who stood there with his mouth slightly ajar. He was blinking rapidly as he decided how he should react. It was hard to speak because a lump had ford in his throat.

While he had been feeling that his hard work proving himself to the King and knighthood had been pushed aside because of all that had happened in the past couple of years, it felt so good to be recognized. It felt even better to be recognized by soone so close to the King.

"I accept," Felix responded when he finally found his voice. "It is an honor to be able to uphold one of the last wishes of a fallen knight. The protection of Chemois is my entire life as it is."

As he walked forward to accept the dal that was placed around his neck, there were more cheers of agreent for the apprentice who had given the knighthood his entire life. Despite all he had lost, he kept going forward.

"And finally, I am pleased to be the one who knights the future Knights of Tenetium," Arthur announced. "May the duchy prosper under you."
