The Morning After - Duke’s Study

Draven sat at his desk, staring at duchy financial reports without actually reading them. His mind was elsewhere.

Last night with Elise. The breeding. Her request for a child.

In the heat of the mont, it had seed perfect. Romantic even. But now, in the cold light of morning...

What the fuck were we thinking?

A knock at the door.

"Co in."

Elise entered. She looked different. Less confident than yesterday. Almost nervous.

"We need to talk," she said.

"I was thinking the sa thing."

She closed the door. Locked it. Sat in the chair across from him.

For a mont, neither spoke.

"I got caught up yesterday," Elise said finally. "In the fantasy. In the idea of carrying your child. But this morning, I started actually thinking about it. Really thinking."

"And?"

"And it’s insane." She laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Draven, if I get pregnant, everyone will ask who the father is. And the only man I’m ever around is you. My son."

"I know."

"We can’t claim it’s yours publicly. That would expose everything. The relationship. The Everything we’ve worked for." She leaned forward. "But I can’t exactly claim it’s soone else’s either. I haven’t been with anyone but you in over a year. People would know I’m lying."

Draven nodded slowly. "So if you’re pregnant..."

"We’d have to hide it. Completely. I’d have to leave. Go sowhere remote. Have the baby in secret. Give it up, or hide it, or—" She stopped. Took a breath. "I can’t believe I didn’t think this through yesterday."

"Neither did I." He stood. Moved around the desk. Sat on the edge near her. "I got caught up too. In the mont. In you wanting my child."

"I do want it," Elise said quietly. "That part wasn’t a lie. I want to carry your baby, Draven. I want that connection. That proof of our love. But..."

"But the reality makes it impossible."

"Yes."

They sat in silence. The weight of it settling between them.

"So what do we do?" Draven asked.

"We have to wait and See if I’m actually pregnant and If I’m not—and the chances aren’t that high from just one session—then we’re more careful going forward and No more breeding attempts until we have a plan."

"And if you are pregnant?"

Elise’s hand went to her stomach. Unconscious gesture. "Then we figure it out. Together Maybe I go stay at one of the remote estates and Claim I’m managing it personally Have the baby there then Bring it back as an orphan we’re adopting Or..." She hesitated. "Or I hide it completely Have soone else raise it Visit when I can."

"That’s not what you want."

"No. But it might be what we need." She looked at him. "I don’t regret yesterday. I don’t regret wanting your child. But we have to be smart about this."

"Agreed."

She reached for his hand. "I’m sorry I got carried away."

"Don’t apologize. We both did. That’s what happens when you remove fear and doubt from a person." He squeezed her hand. "The Abyss Core makes decisive. Certain. But sotis that ans I don’t think through consequences until later."

"And I just get lost in loving you," Elise said. "In wanting everything we can’t have."

They held each other for a mont. Not sexual. Just... connected.

"Whatever happens," Draven said, "we’ll handle it. If you’re pregnant, we’ll find a way. If you’re not, we’ll be more careful. But Elise?"

"Yes?"

"I ant what I said yesterday. I want a child with you. Soday. When we figure out how to do it safely."

She smiled. Genuine this ti. "Soday."

A softer knock at the door. Tentative.

They separated. Composed themselves.

"Enter," Draven called.

Lyra slipped inside. The Shadow Whisperer. Quiet, shy Lyra who’d barely been seen in weeks.

"I’m sorry to interrupt," she said softly. "But you said... you said if I ever needed ti, I could ask. And I... I’d like so ti. If you’re not too busy."

Draven felt a pang of guilt. When was the last ti he’d spent quality ti with Lyra? Really spent ti, not just quick encounters?

Weeks. Maybe a month.

"I’m not too busy," he said. "Elise, we’ll continue this later?"

"Of course." She stood. Kissed his cheek. Whispered, "Take care of her. She’s fragile."

Then left. Leaving Draven alone with Lyra.

The girl looked nervous. Hands clasped in front of her. Not eting his eyes.

"Lyra," Draven said gently. "Co here."

She approached. Slowly. Like a scared animal.

When she was close enough, he pulled her into a hug. Just held her.

"I’m sorry," he said. "I’ve been neglecting you. Getting caught up in duchy business and the others. That’s not fair to you."

"You’re Duke now," Lyra said. Muffled against his chest. "You’re important. Busy. I understand."

"That’s not an excuse. You’re important too. All of you are." He pulled back. Looked at her. "What do you need?"

"Just... ti. With you. Not for sex, necessarily. Just... being together. Talking. Existing in the sa space." She bit her lip. "Is that okay?"

"More than okay." He guided her to the couch. They sat. "Tell what you’ve been doing. How are your shadow magic studies?"

She brightened a little. "Good, actually. I learned a new technique. Want to see?"

"Show ."

She held out her hand. Shadows gathered. Ford a small bird. It flew around the room. Landed on his shoulder. Felt almost real.

"That’s impressive," Draven said.

"It’s just a minor illusion. But I’ve been practicing. Trying to make them more detailed. More lifelike." The bird dissolved. "Sotis I use them to keep company. When I’m alone."

His chest tightened. "Lyra..."

"I’m not trying to make you feel guilty," she said quickly. "I know you have seven of us. Seven won who all want your ti. That’s impossible to manage perfectly. I just... I missed you. That’s all."

"I missed you too."

They sat in comfortable silence. No agenda. No expectations. Just being together.

"Can I tell you sothing?" Lyra asked after a while.

"Always."

"Sotis I feel like I don’t belong. In the harem, I an." She looked at her hands. "Seraphina is a Duke’s daughter. Your equal politically. Elise is... Elise. Your mother and Dowager Duchess. Astrid is a Valkyrie. Strong and fierce. Celeste is brilliant. A professor. Even Elara and Mara have their specialties. And ? I’m just... a shadow mage who’s afraid of everything."

"That’s not true."

"It feels true."

Draven turned to face her fully. "Lyra. Look at ."

She did. Eyes uncertain.

"You’re not ’just’ anything. You’re Lyra Ravenshade. Incredibly talented shadow mage. Survivor of trauma who’s rebuilding herself. Gentle soul in a harsh world." He took her hands. "And you’re mine. Sa as all the others. No hierarchy. No ranking. Just seven won I love in different ways."

"You love ?" Her voice was small. Hopeful.

"Of course I love you."

"Even though I’m not... bold like Astrid? Or commanding like Elise?"

"I love you because you’re you. Because you’re gentle when everyone else is fierce. Because you find beauty in shadows. Because you’re kind and thoughtful and genuine."

Tears ford in her eyes. "Thank you. I needed to hear that."

"I should say it more often."

"Just don’t forget ," she whispered. "That’s all I ask. Don’t let fade into the background."

"Never." He pulled her close again. "I promise. From now on, intentional ti with all of you. Not just whoever’s imdiately available. Scheduled. Planned. Fair."

"Okay."

They stayed like that. Just holding each other. No sexual tension. No agenda.

Just two people who cared about each other, spending ti together.

Human. Natural. Real.

Eventually, Lyra pulled back. "Can I stay? Here in the study? While you work? I won’t bother you. I just... want to be near you."

"Of course. There’s a reading chair by the window. Make yourself comfortable."

She smiled. Genuine. Moved to the chair. Pulled out a book on shadow theory.

And Draven returned to his paperwork. But every few minutes, he looked up. Made sure she was still there. Still comfortable.

This was what the harem needed. Not just sex. Not just intensity.

But monts like this. Quiet. Connected. Human.

He’d have to make more ti for these. For all of them.

Because being Duke ant more than power and politics.

It ant taking care of the people who mattered.

That Evening - Lyra’s Chambers

"Thank you for today," Lyra said. They were in her room. Smaller than his chambers. Cozier. Decorated with books and shadow-thed art.

"You don’t need to thank ."

"I want to." She sat on her bed. Patted the space beside her. "Stay a bit longer?"

He sat. "What do you want to do?"

"Just talk. Maybe... hold each other. If you want."

"I want."

They lay down. Facing each other. Close but not pressed together.

"Can I ask you sothing?" Lyra said.

"Anything."

"Do you ever regret it? The harem? Having seven of us?"

Draven considered. "Sotis it’s overwhelming. Managing ti. Making sure everyone feels valued. But regret? No. Never."

"Even when we’re difficult? When we demand attention or get jealous?"

"Even then. You’re all worth it. The complexity. The effort. All of it."

She smiled. "You’re a good man, Draven. Duke or not. You’re just... good."

"You’re a man who brought justice for his mother and claid what was rightfully his. "

Maybe there was. Maybe she was right.

"Stay tonight," Lyra said. "Not for sex. Just to sleep beside . I miss falling asleep next to you."

"What about Elise? She’ll expect —"

"I already asked her. She said it was fine. That you should spend ti with ." Lyra’s expression was soft. "She’s good too. Sharing you like this. Not being possessive."

Draven made a ntal note to thank his mother later.

"Then I’ll stay," he said.

They settled in. Lyra curled against his chest. His arm around her.

Safe. Comfortable. Peaceful.

No grand revelations. No intense drama. Just two people choosing to be together.

And for tonight, that was perfect.
