The woman didn’t argue but stepped even closer to him her guards following behind her.

Atheline frowned at their approach. They clearly didn’t care about the arrow pointed at them.

The chain around his neck grew warm but not too much.

Her hand went into her pocket, and she pulled out a small, green, luminous stone.

Athelines felt his vision flicker.

She extended her open palm towards him. The stone then started to glow brighter in between them.

Then he felt it. The Aether in the air flowed into the stone as it was activated. Around them the wind picked up and the trees swayed even more.

Ominous.

The light from the stone twisted within itself, and then an image was ford at its place. Atheline stumbled back just a few steps.

A mory projection.

Atheline’s breath caught.

’It’s her, not it can’t be’

Sitting lazily atop a throne surrounded by skulls and gems was she. She had a small crown on her head and was supporting her head with her right hand.

Her gaze was cold and commanding looking down at the dark elves kneeling and bowing before her.

She looked, revered, commanding, respected, and untouchable.

Atheline couldn’t bring himself to believe it was the sa woman who had laughed beside him, she looked different really different, a full contrast.

Atheline felt as though it was soone else who had a similar face to Lily.

"... that’s fabricated," Atheline said imdiately.

Too quickly to even sound believable.

The woman’s eyes widened just a bit.

"This is a mory imprint," she said," taken during one of her monthly etings. The taker was beheaded the very sa day."

Atheline didn’t respond. His eyes remained fixed on the image. The way she looked, sat, and even the little micro expression.

She looked completely at ho on the throne with everyone bowing before her.

"..No.." he muttered again.

This ti he was quieter, as he tried to convince himself.

"There is more."

Atheline didn’t even look at the woman. He didn’t want to, he wanted to pretend everything happening wasn’t real.

Despite this, he still listened to her.

"The dark elf queen is not just a political figure," she said," she’s the centre piece of a prophecy. "

Atheline frowned.

"She’s destined to lead the fall of most kingdoms, yours included."

What ensued was a deep suffocating silence. Not even the birds that had returned sang or even chirped dared to open their beaks.

Atheline exhaled, letting out a faint breath.

"....so you expect to believe, "he said slowly, " that the person I’ve been speaking to..."

His voice faltered, just a little bit.

"....Is so kind of....harbinger of destruction?"

"Yes," the woman answered imdiately.

A short hollow laugh burst out of Atheline.

"That’s absurd. "

Despite his denial. His words didn’t carry any weight like they did in the beginning.

Atheline’s mind was now moving fast, replaying everything. How they t, their conversations, every glance, and the guards’ incomplete words.

The book ca to mind, the little bit he couldn’t even rember well.

Every mont now felt...different and wrong.

"...she never..." he started then he stopped.

But that wasn’t true. She had never really told him anything about herself except for the fact that she was a commander.

He didn’t even know what she liked to eat, sothing so trivial and he had thought himself to be observant.

He didn’t even know which part of the dark elven kingdom she ca from.

Atheline stumbled with his bow almost slipping from his hand but his instincts as a warrior prevented him from losing his weapon.

".. she...she never lied," he said in almost a whisper.

He could feel it, he was trying to convince himself.

The woman’s voice cut through his fragile defence.

"She didn’t need to."

That hit Atheline harder than he could have imagined. He clenched his hands. The bow dug into his palm but the other the sharp side of the dagger cut into the end of his right arm.

He didn’t feel the pain or blood. His body trembled a little.

His breath slowed as he tried to restrain himself. He turned his suspension on the woman after noticing his failing emotions.

"...why are you telling this?" He asked in a sharp voice.

The woman was quiet then she answered.

"Because you’ve been seen with her. Repeatedly."

Atheline finally looked at her.

"And?"

"And if this continues," she said, " you’ll be considered compromised."

Atheline’s heart sank. What did they an by that?

’Am I a liability, fool, or....her weakness?’

"So what," Atheline said defensively, " you think I’ve been manipulated. "

No one answered except for the breaking of a mud bubble. The quiet was deafening. That was enough to show what was being assud.

Atheline’s gaze went back to the projection, at her, sitting there, the sa way she’d sat once in front of him as she laughed.

At the mont she looked so powerful and untouchable. The mory felt tainted.

She felt like a stranger, a mirage he had seen and interacted with.

The sun had finally set and the mirage had vanished with it.

"... was any of this real.." he murmured.

As expected there was no one to answer him. To reassure him that he wasn’t crazy or stupid.

That was the worst part.

No answer or denial.

He was left to ponder on his own. A creeping doubt settled into him.

Atheline took a step back, then again but stumbled on his fourth step. He looked around but the quiet he always appreciated felt suffocating as though it was mocking him.

"I need to think... " I need air," he said.

The woman and her guards took a step forward, " Atheline.."

Wind so powerful burst out of Atheline. The three were thrown away nearly hitting the tree.

"That’s more extre than I had expected, " the woman said as a cleaning spell covered her.

She looked at the place Atheline had been. The ground had sunk, and he was nowhere to be seen.

"He went in that direction," one of the guards said to her.

The woman shook her head then chuckled.

"Even better. His death would be the best result we could hope for."
