His father’s gaze was heavy, carrying the responsibility of managing both sides. Remaining loyal to the king and doing what’s best for the family without compromising either.

"You understand what happened beneath the world tree," He stated.

Atheline nodded his face a mask of seriousness.

"I do."

The answer hung in the air as they maintained eye contact with each other. His father leaned back on the chair and placed his clasped hand on the edge of the table.

"Explain to ."

Atheline could feel it. The words weren’t accusative but his father was trying to make sure he t expectations and understood the gravity of the situation.

Atheline exhaled slowly.

"The tree resisted her aether," he said while trying to co up with a good word to describe the phenonon." It wasn’t fully but enough to almost destabilise the ritual. It would have been ruled as an incompatible marriage."

His father didn’t move.

"Go on."

"I... stabilised the flow of Aether," he continued, " by creating a sort of alignnt between our powers and the world tree but.... I do not fully understand it yet."

Silence followed before he felt a hand on his shoulders.

"You did that, mixed your Aether?" Helther asked in wonder.

Atheline shrugged. He himself couldn’t understand what on earth had happened.

He had just stepped forward instinctively and did that since they were supposed to do it at the sa ti.

Lily had just been overeager towards the ritual.

His father leaned forward a small cough escaping him catching their attention.

"You do know what you did wasn’t a small feat, right?"

Atheline nodded then shook his head right after.

"It wasn’t intentional."

His father sighed.

"No one cares if it was intentional or not," he explained calmly, " what matters is the fact that dark aether and light aether, which are completely different and are believed to be incompatible were able to mix and receive the approval of the world tree. "

Atheline frowned.

"Logically speaking, Father, the world tree produces all the world aether so all the types of aether are basically the sa component in hindsight," he said though deep down he understood his father’s vow point," this is just because she is a dark elf isn’t it?"

Atheline let out a defeated sigh.

His father shook his head.

"The world tree rarely gives approval to even high elves, that was why marriage with the permission of the world tree was abolished," he explained, " it asures your intent in its point of view without caring about anything else. A small mistake could prove catastrophic. "

Atheline took in a deep breath.

’Then what on earth is this system thing. Did we get a hundred percent approval or sothing’

"Are you really okay with this, brother?" Helther asked his worry leaking into his voice," I can help you escape if you want."

There was tension in the air. Unexpectedly his father didn’t interrupt.

Atheline smiled. How lucky he was.

"It’s okay, this is my decision."

His brother’s eyes narrowed.

"And you stand by it?"

"Yes."

Those words were like the final nail in the coffin. The little hope and offer they had extended to him had been shut down.

A small laugh escaped Helther while dragging his hand through his hair.

"You’ve always been like this," he muttered, " once you’ve decided sothing it’s over.... urgh... I can’t believe you’re getting married earlier than I am what in the Light is this?"

Atheline chuckled smugly.

"I saw you with Lord Feltham’s daughter at the boutique."

His brother paled.

"Don’t even talk about that woman, she’s been following everywhere for the past five years and to make matters worse father decided to make her my assistant, what a sin... oh light..." he sighed dramatically," I just want to enjoy my unmarried life. Now I have all your responsibilities dumped on ..."

"Enough."

His father’s voice carried weight forcing them to shut up. Helther stepped away from Atheline and regained his serious stance.

His father got out of his seat and stepped forward until he was standing in front of Atheline.

"Look at ."

Atheline did. Since they were the sa height he just had to look straight ahead.

"Do you choose this," he asked quietly, " as my son.... or as a piece on the board."

The question cut deeper than anything since it stripped any form of pretense. The question was raw and filled with emotions.

Atheline stared into his fathers eyes then answered.

"As both," he started," I understand the position it creates and the risks it brings to be by her side. I’ll face them head-on."

This was a conversation between a father and son not between two advisors forced to put the kingdom first.

"And her?" He asked another important question, "Do you choose her?"

Atheline was silent for a mont because the answer also mattered to him.

"I choose the path that includes her."

The tension in his father’s body visibly reduced. He touched Atheline’s shoulder with a rare smile on his lips.

"There is no need to worry about anything else. I’ll talk to your mother, she’ll co around."

Atheline smiled back and nodded.

"Thank you, father."

His father turned and took his seat again. He leaned over and opened the drawer at his right before shuffling through it and took out a small rectangular box.

"You have always been capable of seeing further than what is placed in front of you," he continued, " I will not insult you by assuming this is blindness."

He pushed the box towards him. Atheline picked it up.

"You will carry the consequences of your choice."

Atheline nodded.

"I know."

He opened the box in curiosity only to find three small vials of pink liquid.

"Then you have my full support."

Atheline smiled but he turned his attention back to the liquid confusion marring his face.

"What is this, Father?" He asked.

Helther glanced at them before he burst out laughing. His father sighed.

"What are you laughing at?"

Atheline bristled.

"Virgin," his brother mumbled under his breath.

Atheline heard it clearly.

"Hey, that..."

"It’s to prevent childbirth. While we do have a problem with reproduction it does not an it won’t happen at a mont of carelessness. "

Atheline’s eyes widened. The thought hadn’t crossed his mind at all.

’So this is birth control for n’

"Thank you, father."

He genuinely never cared about the works of the flesh since he was too busy to even think about it.

’Maybe I didn’t find anyone attractive enough’

He thought to himself in amusent as he looked at the liquids.

’I should probably buy more of this’
