The healer swallowed.

"The poison does not behave like a newly administered toxic. It has already spread... extensively," he said.

The healer glanced at the others who were just as pale then back to Lilith, who seed to be in thought.

"Explain."

"The poison has already integrated with his blood and the reaction is still ongoing," he paused as he debated whether to continue," it is being triggered by sothing."

That caught her attention.

"By what?"

"Alcohol."

Lilith’s eyes widened when the mory of him drinking her wine flooded in then what he said before he lost consciousness.

She could still sll the faint scent of wine on herself.

"Continue."

"The reaction even after drinking it is not imdiate. The toxins appear dormant until activation. Once activated the affected will experience heat and exertion... alcohol consumption would accelerate the reaction significantly."

"So you’re telling it would have still activated eventually without the alcohol?" Lilith asked.

Her hands tightened around Atheline’s free hand. She had ended up sitting next to him in the commotion.

"Yes, your majesty. "

She closed her eyes for a fraction before opening again.

Her breath had returned to its steady pace and her heart rate was back to normal.

"How long?"

"It would not have taken effect instantly upon ingestion of alcohol. There would be a delay. This would be the ti required for absorption before activation conditions are t."

"How long?" She asked again.

"At least several hours," the healer answered imdiately.

Suffocating silence filled the room and only the sound of Atheline’s broken breaths could be heard.

Lilith could feel her heart breaking.

’Did he start experiencing pain while next to and I didn’t notice?’

She rembered his weird actions but she had chalked it up to him getting tired of the crowd. His reassurance had been enough to lower her guard.

’Why didn’t you turn to my love, why?’

She glanced down at the pale Atheline. With the treatnts from the healers, color had started to return to his pale face and his breathing was starting to get steady.

"Stabilise him."

The healer nodded and bowed.

"Yes, your majesty."

The healers shifted their focus after they had finished healing most of his internal organs.

They pushed their aether directing it to contain though not fully the fast spreading poison.

The urgency in the air was evident as they moved around changing positions while administering their healing.

Lilith sat next to Atheline, her gaze still on him as she also pushed her aether into his core.

’Thank the moon it’s not affected’

She placed her hand on his forehead only to be t with burning heat.

"Can it be removed?" She asked quietly her gaze still on Atheline.

The healers glanced at each other briefly.

"... Not directly at the mont," he answered carefully then continued, "it can be suppressed and managed but the components themselves are ... complex."

Lilith didn’t even know how to react at this point. She felt angry but also worried about what would occur.

’I failed you my love’

"Do you know its origins?" She asked but she could already place the answer herself.

"It’s unknown, " the healer answered his voice dropping with concealed emotions," it’s not common within our borders nor the elven borders as a whole."

Lilith stared at the healer for a mont forcing the man to break contact. She then turned her attention back to the sleeping Atheline.

He looked so peaceful and his body showed no sign that he had tried to fight the poison, if anything he didn’t react like how most poisoning victims would react.

He looked too perfect and the incident of him falling by the door was the only indication.

He had endured the pain and he seed not to want her to see him in pain.

It was a sweet gesture but she felt angry at him for not turning to her.

Lilith slid her hand out of his and arranged his hand. She turned to the healers again.

"Keep him alive," she commanded.

The healers nodded.

"Yes, your majesty."

Lilith reluctantly stood up. She touched his face one last ti and headed for the door.

Five shadows were left in the room to guard her as the healers continued their treatnt.

It broke her heart to leave him but she had an investigation to do. She will not allow anyone who hurts her beloved to survive.

Lilith stopped outside her door and turned to the guards who were guarding the door.

"Do not allow the healers to leave," she commanded.

The head palace guard nodded.

"Yes, your majesty."

"Also, no one is allowed into the room... if even a speck of dust drifts in, I will have your heads hanging on the palace gates."

Liliths didn’t wait for their answer and walked down the hallway towards the banquet hall.

Her arrival was like the coming of judgnt days for the nobles who were now panicking, especially the younger ones.

The older elves were at least calm but the drops of sweat and the occasionally trembling hands betrayed their tension.

She walked down the sa pathway she had used to proudly show off her beloved one, but at this mont, it felt suffocating.

He had suffered on the sa walkway.

’If only I had risen earlier.’

She took Atheline’s seat on the dias just to feel his warmth even though the chair had gone cold.

She closed her eyes briefly as she imrsed herself in the illusion of him being below her laughing while complaining whenever she sat on his lap unexpectedly.

The mont she sat down, Zelpher who had been the one to hold down the nobles who had started to get rowdy slipped through the smaller servants’ door and left the hall while breathing a sigh of relief.

’I should postpone the travelling plans’

He ran a hand through his hair in frustration before one dipped into his pocket and a small packet of blue powder was revealed.

Sleeping agents he had prepared for Atheline.

"Guess we won’t be needing it anymore," he murmured to himself.

A small fla burnt through the powder and the ashes scattered beside him.
