Now reading: Chapter 9 — THE FIRST RIVAL from INFINITE GROWTH SYSTEM: FROM NOTHING TO ABSOLUTE POWER, a Fantasy novel by SegunMayowajohn.

Rain fell without rcy.

It drumd against the broken pavent, ran along the cracks in the road, and blurred the distant lights of the city into sothing indistinct and cold.

Ethan Carter stood alone in the middle of it.

Still.

Silent.

The fragnts of the elite entity had long since faded, leaving no trace behind.

But sothing remained.

A feeling.

Pressure.

WARNING: OBSERVED BY HIGHER-LEVEL USER

The system ssage lingered in his vision, faint but persistent.

It didn’t disappear.

It didn’t fade.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"...So you’re still there."

His voice was calm, but his body had already adjusted.

Weight balanced.

Muscles loose.

Mind sharp.

"...Co out."

The rain answered first.

Then—

A shape moved across the street.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A figure stepped into view.

Tall.

Composed.

Unhurried.

A young man.

Simple clothing.

Nothing flashy.

Nothing exaggerated.

But everything about him felt controlled.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"...You’re not hiding."

The man stopped a few ters away.

Rain slid down his shoulders like it didn’t matter.

"There’s no reason to."

The system flickered violently.

WARNING: THREAT LEVEL EXCEEDS PREVIOUS PARATERS

Ethan felt it too.

Not fear.

Not panic.

A difference.

"...So you’re stronger than the others."

The man tilted his head slightly.

"Stronger?"

A brief pause.

"No."

Another step forward.

"Just ahead."

That answer settled heavily.

Ethan didn’t respond imdiately.

He studied him instead.

"...Ahead of what?"

The man stopped again.

This ti, closer.

"Growth."

The word lingered.

Ethan’s eyes sharpened.

"...So you’re like ."

The man shook his head.

"No."

A single word.

Clear.

Certain.

"You’re trying to survive."

A faint smile ford.

"I’ve already passed that stage."

The air seed to tighten.

The space between them felt heavier.

Ethan took a slow breath.

"...Then why are you here?"

The man’s gaze sharpened slightly.

"To see if you’re worth rembering."

That was enough.

Ethan moved.

No warning.

No hesitation.

He closed the distance instantly.

His strike was clean.

Precise.

Controlled.

CRACK!

Blocked.

Effortlessly.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"...Didn’t even move."

The man’s arm had shifted slightly.

Just enough.

"Too direct."

The counter ca imdiately.

Fast.

Ethan barely reacted—

BOOM!

The impact slamd into his guard, sending him backward.

His feet slid across the wet ground, water splashing around him.

Pain registered.

But didn’t stop him.

"...Heavy."

He stabilized himself quickly.

The man didn’t chase.

Didn’t rush.

He walked forward.

That alone made it worse.

Ethan’s breathing slowed again.

"...He’s controlling everything."

The system flickered.

COMBAT DISADVANTAGE DETECTED

Ethan ignored it.

"...Then I change the pattern."

He moved again.

This ti—

Not directly.

He circled.

Shifted angles.

Adjusted rhythm.

Footwork light.

Controlled.

The man watched.

Carefully.

Then—

He moved.

Faster.

Ethan reacted—

But the difference showed.

CRACK!

A clean hit landed on his shoulder.

Pain shot through him.

He staggered slightly—

But didn’t fall.

"...Still standing?"

There was a hint of interest now.

Ethan straightened slowly.

Ignoring the pain.

"...I’m not that easy to put down."

Rain ran down his face.

Mixing with sweat.

The system pulsed.

COMBAT INSTINCT — MAX OUTPUT

Everything sharpened.

Movent clearer.

Timing tighter.

Ethan stepped forward again.

This ti—

More precise.

He feinted.

Shifted.

Closed distance—

Strike.

CRACK!

A hit landed.

The man stepped back.

Just once.

Ethan’s eyes sharpened.

"...So you can be pushed."

The man smiled faintly.

"Good."

Ethan didn’t stop.

He pressed forward.

Each movent calculated.

Each attack layered.

He wasn’t just fighting.

He was learning.

The man responded.

Not overwheld.

Not pressured.

Just... adapting.

Their movents clashed repeatedly.

Fast.

Clean.

Relentless.

Water splashed beneath their feet with every shift.

Rain blurred the edges of their forms.

But within that chaos—

Control remained.

Ethan’s strikes beca sharper.

His movents tighter.

But the gap—

Still existed.

The man’s counter ca again.

Faster.

Stronger.

Ethan blocked—

But the force pushed him back again.

"...Still ahead."

Frustration flickered.

But didn’t grow.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"...Then I close it."

He moved again.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just intent.

This ti—

He changed more than rhythm.

He changed approach.

Less attack.

More reaction.

Less force.

More control.

The next strike ca—

Ethan slipped past it.

Redirected.

Countered—

CRACK!

Another clean hit.

The man stepped back again.

This ti—

Slightly more.

"...You’re adapting mid-fight."

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because it was obvious.

The system flickered.

ADAPTATION RATE: INCREASING

Ethan moved again.

Pushing further.

Testing limits.

The gap began to shrink—

Slightly.

But—

Still there.

Always there.

Then—

The man stopped.

Completely.

Ethan froze for a split second.

"...What?"

The man stepped back.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"That’s enough."

Ethan frowned.

"...You’re stopping?"

The man nodded slightly.

"For now."

That irritated him more than anything else.

"...You don’t get to decide that."

Ethan moved forward again—

But he couldn’t reach him.

The distance had already been reset.

Perfectly.

Controlled.

"You’re not ready yet."

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

"...You keep saying that."

The man turned slightly.

"Because it’s true."

Rain intensified.

Silence followed.

Then—

"But you’re close."

Ethan paused.

"...Close?"

The man glanced back briefly.

"Closer than most."

That mattered.

More than he expected.

Ethan clenched his fist slightly.

"...Next ti."

The man’s gaze sharpened.

"Next ti, I won’t hold back."

Ethan smirked faintly.

"...You were holding back?"

No answer.

The man stepped back into the rain.

And disappeared.

Just like that.

Gone.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Ethan stood still.

Breathing steady.

His body ached.

His muscles strained.

But his eyes—

Focused.

Sharp.

"...So that’s the gap."

The system flickered softly.

NEW STATUS: RIVAL IDENTIFIED

Ethan stared at it.

"...Rival."

The word settled in his mind.

Not as a threat.

But as a goal.

A target.

A line he had to cross.

A faint smile ford.

"...Good."

He looked into the distance.

Rain falling endlessly.

"...Then I’ll surpass you."

The system pulsed once.

As if acknowledging his intent.

And sowhere—

Beyond his reach—

Sothing else watched.

Waiting.

For him to rise higher.

Or fall completely.
