The screen exploded with light. Brilliant gold rays burst outward in every direction, filling his entire field of vision with radiance that was probably visible from space. Music swelled from the phone’s speaker, triumphant orchestral strings that sounded way too epic for a mobile app notification. Like sothing from a movie trailer about saving the world.
Chloe stirred slightly beside him, her eyebrows drawing together in her sleep. Jordan quickly muted his phone and waited, holding his breath until she settled back down with a soft sigh. The last thing he needed was to explain why his phone sounded like the climax of a superhero movie at midnight.
Co on, co on, give sothing good. Anything that’ll help not completely fuck up this new life I’m building.
The light coalesced into a spinning wheel covered in dozens of different icons. Jordan couldn’t make out most of them as they blurred past in a kaleidoscope of possibilities, but he caught glimpses of swords, books, hearts, dollar signs, and stranger symbols he didn’t recognize. So looked like they belonged in a fantasy ga. Others looked like emoji that hadn’t been invented yet.
The wheel began to slow. Jordan’s heart rate kicked up as the pointer ticked past each icon with an audible click that sohow managed to sound both expensive and ominous.
Please be sothing useful. Please don’t be another trash trait like Dramatic Tumbleweed. I swear if this thing gives sothing useless after making wait this long I’m throwing my phone off the balcony and pretending none of this ever happened.
The wheel crawled to a stop on an icon that looked like a disco ball surrounded by musical notes. Jordan stared at it for several seconds, his brain refusing to process what he was seeing.
GOLD TIER ACQUIRED
[King of Disco]
|Uncommon Trait|
Kinesthetic-auditory synchronization protocols installed. You now possess an innate, master-class aptitude for rhythmic expression and choreographic execution. Passively enhances balance, agility, and fine motor control.
System Note: You have been granted the footwork of a professional dancer, but the ability is titled "King of Disco." We strongly advise against referring to yourself as such. No amount of expert John Travolta impressions will make you popular at a Gen-Z house party. Please dance responsibly.
Jordan stared at the description for a long mont, reading it twice to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating from exhaustion.
Then he started laughing.
He couldn’t help it. The sound ca out quiet and strangled because he was trying not to wake Chloe, but his shoulders shook with genuine amusent that bordered on hysteria. He bit down on his knuckle to muffle the noise, tears forming at the corners of his eyes from the effort of staying silent.
Are you fucking kidding right now? King of Disco? KING OF DISCO?
This was his big gold tier reward? Dance skills? Not super strength or telepathy or the ability to manifest money out of thin air like so kind of financial wizard? Just the supernatural power to do the fucking hustle without looking like a complete idiot?
You’ve got to be shitting . What am I supposed to do with this? Challenge people to dance battles? Start a TikTok account where I recreate Saturday Night Fever? Beco the world’s youngest professional ballroom instructor?
The System Note’s warning about John Travolta impressions made it even worse. The app was literally telling him not to act out Grease scenes in public, which suggested that was sohow a real possibility now.
But even as the thought crossed his mind, Jordan felt sothing shift in his body. It was subtle, barely noticeable, like soone had fine-tuned his nervous system while he wasn’t looking. The change spread through his limbs like warm water, settling into his bones and muscles with a strange sense of rightness.
His sense of balance felt sharper. More centered. Like he could feel exactly where his center of gravity was at all tis, how his weight distributed across the mattress, the precise angle of his spine against the pillows. When he shifted slightly to get more comfortable, the movent felt effortless, controlled, like his body knew exactly how to move without his brain having to micromanage every muscle.
When he flexed his fingers experintally, the movent felt smoother sohow. More coordinated. Like his brain and his muscles had suddenly learned to communicate in HD instead of standard definition. His hand moved with a precision that would have been impossible an hour ago.
Okay. Okay that’s actually kind of cool. Not what I wanted, but cool. Maybe this isn’t completely useless after all.
Jordan tried to imagine himself on a dance floor. The old him would have looked like a newborn giraffe learning to walk, all awkward limbs and no rhythm, stepping on girls’ feet while apologizing profusely. But now? Now he could picture his body moving with actual grace, hitting beats, staying in sync with music, maybe even leading instead of following.
The ntal image of himself doing a perfect John Travolta point-to-the-sky move made him snort quietly into his hand.
Alright System, you win. This is hilarious and I hate that I’m going to end up using it. You’re really trying to turn into so kind of main character, aren’t you? Next you’ll give the ability to play guitar or sothing equally ridiculous.
The trait description ntioned enhanced balance and agility as passive bonuses. That could actually be useful in daily life, beyond just looking smooth on a dance floor. Better coordination ant fewer chances of tripping over his own feet or dropping things like a complete klutz. And fine motor control would help with everything from typing to cooking to other activities he wasn’t going to think about while Chloe was sleeping naked against his side.
But seriously though. King of Disco? That’s the na you went with? You couldn’t have called it ’Master of Movent’ or ’Perfect Rhythm’ or literally anything that wouldn’t make sound like I own a leisure suit collection and know where to buy cocaine in the seventies?
He closed out of the trait screen and looked at his updated stats, scrolling through the growing list with a mixture of pride and bewildernt.
ACTIVE TRAITS:
• Tune Up (Rare)
• Ceaseless Discharge (Common)
• Bitch Breaker (Uncommon)
• Dramatic Tumbleweed (Trash)
• Headpat (Common)
• Alluring Whisper (Uncommon)
• King of Disco (Uncommon)
Jordan grimaced at the list. Half of these were genuinely useful abilities that had already changed his life in asurable ways. The other half ranged from situational to actively embarrassing to explain to anyone who might sohow discover them.
At least I don’t have to tell anyone about the disco thing. That can be my secret sha, right up there with the fact that I once spent four hundred dollars on a mobile ga and the ti I cried during The Notebook.
