The night air of the frontier was crisp, biting with the scent of ozone and cooling volcanic earth. Kai moved through the shadows of Staging Camp Oga like a ghost. The chaos of the evacuation provided the perfect shroud; soldiers were busy loading heavy ordnance onto cargo lifters, and the command staff was too preoccupied with the impending collapse of the sector to notice a single, lone freshman wandering toward the transport docks.

He didn't need to steal a ship. He didn't even need to be on the manifest.

He reached the primary landing pad, where the massive, cathedral-like transport airships were undergoing final pre-flight diagnostics. These vessels were the lifeblood of the frontier, hauling processed mana-ore back to the capital, and today, they were being packed with the bruised, exhausted, and traumatized students of the freshman cohort.

Near the central pylon, he saw Elena.

She was standing by the ramp of the lead transport, her armor scuffed, a thin line of dried blood tracing her jawline. She was reviewing a list of nas, her expression tight and professional, but her eyes were searching the horizon. She wasn't looking for the Vanguard legionaries; she was looking for him.

Kai stepped out of the darkness of a storage crate.

Elena’s head snapped toward him, her hand instinctively flying to the hilt of her rapier. The tension in her shoulders didn't break until she saw his face. "Kai," she breathed, her voice a mix of relief and genuine shock. "We were told... the scouts found the site. They said there were no survivors."

"They looked at the surface," Kai said, his voice calm. "They didn't look at the truth."

Elena walked toward him, scanning him for injuries. She noticed the slight change in his posture—the way he held himself with an unnerving, predatory stillness that hadn't been there before the trial. "You look different. How did you get out? How did you survive the crawl?"

"The Rift provides," Kai said cryptically, his eyes scanning the deck of the airship. "It’s ti to leave, Elena. This place is going to be purged by the Vanguard within the hour. They’re collapsing the tunnels to bury the evidence of their operation."

Elena stiffened. "What are you talking about?"

"The Vances aren't just mining ore," Kai said, his voice dropping to a low, authoritative register. "They’re experinting on the students. They’re using the Abyss as a processing plant. If you stay on this ship, you’re a witness. If you go back to the academy, you’re a loose end."

"My father is a Duke of the Empire," Elena said, though there was a tremor of doubt in her voice. "They wouldn't dare touch a Reinhardt."

"They already have," Kai countered, stepping closer. "Look at the data-packet I just sent to your secure comms. It’s a complete log of the Vance family’s illegal mana-refinent, including the nas of the students they've already 'recycled'."

Elena’s holographic display chid. She opened the file, her eyes darting across the text. As she read, the color bled from her face. She looked up at Kai, her hand trembling. "This is treason. This is... they’d be executed. The entire family line."

"Which is exactly why they are going to ensure no one survives this sector," Kai said. "The airship you’re about to board isn't flying to the capital. It’s on a flight path to a pre-programd crash zone in the southern barrens."

The realization hit her like a physical blow. Elena’s hand tightened on the hilt of her blade. "Why are you telling this?"

"Because you were the only one who didn't look at like an F-Rank failure," Kai said simply. "Get off the ship. Take a shuttle to the neutral zones. If you stay with the Vanguard fleet, you won't survive the week."

"And you?" she asked, looking at him with sudden, sharp clarity. "What are you going to do?"

Kai looked up at the sky, where the bruised purple clouds were beginning to swirl in a tight, ominous vortex—a sign that the Vanguard’s seismic charges were being prepped.

"I’m not leaving yet," Kai said. "I still have a debt to collect."

"Kai, don't," she urged, her voice desperate. "If you go back in there, or if you attack the Vance command post, they’ll declare you a monster. The empire will hunt you down."

"Let them try," Kai replied.

With a silent, graceful pivot, he turned away from the boarding ramp.

"Wait!" she called out, but Kai was already blending into the shadows of the hangars.

He didn't need to run. He moved with a subtle, Aero-Glide precision that made him look like he was drifting through the air rather than walking. He bypassed the security checkpoints, slipped past the thermal sensors, and reached the heart of the base: the Vance family’s command bunker.

Inside, Marcus Vance was sitting at a massive mahogany desk, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, watching a live feed of the rift’s collapse. He was smiling.

He didn't hear the door open. He didn't hear the hum of the mana-field in the room shifting.

"A toast to the failures," Marcus murmured to the empty room. "May they find eternal peace in the dark."

"They won't," a voice replied from the corner of the room. "But you might."

Marcus dropped his glass. It shattered against the floor, but before he could reach for the sidearm on his desk, the lights in the command bunker died.

The Sovereign’s Domain surged, slamming the room into absolute, suffocating silence. Kai stepped out from the darkness, his golden-geotric eyes glowing with the cold, final light of the Abyss.

The final hunt had shifted to the ho front.
