"I hired him to bring us the barbecue. Otherwise it’d be a pain standing over there waiting and we wouldn’t enjoy eating." Chen Feiqiu directly explained to Lin Weiwei. "I also prepared the nu, and I brought part of the ingredients myself."
So that was it, no wonder.
Lin Weiwei shrugged.
When they were ordering, Chen Feiqiu kindly reminded them that the skewers here were big, so everyone should start with two, try the taste and how well it was grilled, see if the spices suited them, and then order more after they finished.
Bai Xiaosheng and Lei Ying both accepted his suggestion.
"I’m starving, I can’t wait." Lin Weiwei ordered ten skewers straight away.
Ordering two by two felt way too stingy to her.
Chen Feiqiu burst out laughing on the spot, but didn’t say anything.
Bai Xiaosheng and Lei Ying naturally didn’t think much of it either.
When the skewers ca up, Lin Weiwei’s eyes went wide, and Bai Xiaosheng and Lei Ying were also stunned.
These weren’t the small lamb skewers back in China; they were chunks of at strung on the stick, each piece about as big as Lin Weiwei’s fist.
Ten skewers piled on one plate, stacked up like a little mountain.
And that was just one type of at.
Lin Weiwei had ordered several kinds.
The guy hired by Chen Feiqiu ran back and forth several tis, and soon there wasn’t a single empty spot left on the table in front of Lin Weiwei, just heaps of at mountains.
Lin Weiwei was completely dumbfounded.
Seeing this, the other three burst out laughing.
"No more, don’t bring any more!" Lin Weiwei cried out in shock, frantically waving at the waiter bringing dishes.
Chen Feiqiu also told the guy to stop serving, and even had him take away two plates to clear so space on the table.
"Co on, taste our African barbecue. This is a locally secret spice mix—dip it in that and it’s even better."
As he spoke, Chen Feiqiu also asked the guy to bring beer.
Locally brewed beer that had been chilled in the fridge in advance, ice-cold and with a great mouthfeel.
Beer with barbecue—one of life’s great pleasures.
The three of them and Chen Feiqiu tucked in heartily, chatting about fun stories from all over the world as they drank.
Once they had sothing in their stomachs, the four of them started playing finger-guessing gas and other little drinking gas, laughter ringing out again and again.
By the end, they were all slightly tipsy.
Patting Bai Xiaosheng, Chen Feiqiu slurred, "I more or less... should head ho now. Consider this our last drink before I go. I saw the news, I know the next few countries your Huaxia Business Group is going to visit... you’ll pass by my ho. When you get there, I—I’ll treat you again, to so really good booze!"
"I’ll be... waiting." Bai Xiaosheng, also a bit tongue-tied, replied, "And while we’re at it, let say goodbye—wish you a smooth journey!"
Chen Feiqiu thumped Bai Xiaosheng on the shoulder, taking it as thanks.
"Chen Feiqiu, where exactly is your hotown?" Lin Weiwei asked from the side.
Chen Feiqiu stared straight at her, thought blankly for a while, then said, "For...got. But you guys will pass by there..."
"Then what’s your real na?" Lei Ying asked as well.
Scratching his face, Chen Feiqiu wailed a little, "I think... I forgot that too."
You can forget that as well?
With a "thunk," Lin Weiwei slamd the beer bottle down in front of him. "Forgot? You, three drinks as punishnt!"
They joked and laughed, and ti flew by.
The once-boisterous street was starting to empty out.
Unlike back in Huaxia, here it started to quiet down after nine, and after ten there were hardly any people around.
Just as the four of them were about to wrap things up, several people walked into the tent.
At the front was a young Black man dressed very fashionably, and the few following behind him all looked like trouble.
As soon as they ca in, they started hollering loudly.
"Didn’t expect there’d still be a barbecue place open here! Don’t all the shops around here usually close around nine?"
"Must be they stayed open just for us—perfect, I’m starving!"
"Once we’ve eaten and drunk our fill, let’s go find a few pretty chicks. It’s gonna be a great night!"
Their words were accompanied by unrestrained laughter.
Aside from Bai Xiaosheng’s table, the people at the other two tables, seeing these guys were bad news, hurriedly got up and left.
Which left the four of them suddenly standing out.
"Oh? Yellow skin, Asians." The young man in the lead snapped his fingers.
The few at Bai Xiaosheng’s table ignored them.
Among those newcors, soone went to the barbecue shop to ask for food, but ca back cursing, saying there wasn’t much left.
The guy hired by Chen Feiqiu happened to be carrying out a big box of raw at and seafood.
Generous as he was, and also pretty kind, Chen Feiqiu was giving away a large amount of the leftover ingredients to him. The guy was delighted, saying he’d bring them ho for his wife and kids, and thanked them over and over.
Before these people arrived, he had already carried off one box, and now he was coming for the second.
But the newcors saw this, and one of them imdiately jumped out to block his way.
"Isn’t that at, and seafood too! Where are you taking that?!" the man demanded, eyes wide.
The hired guy gave a fawning smile. "Sir, I don’t work for the barbecue place. This is my own stuff, I’m taking it ho..."
"Sell it to us!" The Black man in the lead pulled out so cash and slapped it on the table.
The hired guy kept smiling nervously. "It’s not for sale..."
"Cut the crap!" The one blocking his way was already impatient. He snatched the box away in one grab, and soone else picked up the money on the table and tossed it at him.
"It really isn’t for sale!" The hired guy was getting anxious now and lunged to grab it back, but a big burly man from their group stepped in, blocked him, and gave him a hard shove.
The man staggered forward and was sent stumbling, just as Bai Xiaosheng and the others were lifting their glasses for a final farewell drink—he crashed right into Chen Feiqiu’s back.
