Quintin’s POV
Exactly two weeks ago, I finally received a response through a letter from my father. I regularly send him letters to let him know how I was doing but I rarely get a response since it is not only difficult to send one from our town but it is also quite expensive. I thought at that ti that since he responded, it might be about sothing really important.
I took the letter from the adventurer guild receptionist and then ran excitedly back to the inn that I was staying in. After entering my room, I hurriedly opened the letter, wanting to read the contents as soon as possible.
As I read through the letter, I couldn’t help but smile as my father gave his well wishes and he told how happy he was that I arrived safely at my destination. They also thanked for the package I recently sent to the town. My father and mother have always been like this. They just want to do well.
I am very lucky with my parents. Even if I was a male, they never despised or thought of as a burden. They gave the best of everything they could afford. When I ca of age and told them that I want to leave and be an adventurer, though I know that they did not agree, they respected my wishes and even gave so pocket money and packed food to show their support.
Even as my rank got higher and at the sa ti my pay increased as well, they never asked how much I was earning. They never demanded for anything from and always told to buy myself better food, clothing and items that can protect myself before going to missions. As much as I want to do that, my heart felt heavy knowing that the town I left behind might be starving as I was enjoying the comforts of the city.
Since my parents will never accept a huge amount of money, I always made sure to send them a package once a month instead. It is typically full of items that are hard to get in our area like good quality cloth, cotton, thread, needles, cooking oil, sugar, salt, seeds, soap and so basic dicine.
At first my parents chastised for spending to much money on the items in the package but for the first ti, I decided to be stubborn and still send another package the month after that. My parents could only gently tell that I do not have to do it every month but I still did.
Towards the end of the letter, the tone of the ssage suddenly changed. My father said that it was great that I was away since so bandits have been visiting the town asking for food. Who would even believe that bandits will be nice enough to just ask for food? Would they even allow you to say no to their requests?
Upon reading the whole letter, I hurriedly packed my personal belongings. I passed by the adventurer’s hall to advise them that I had to go back to my town for an ergency. I wrote the sa ssage in a letter and have them send it to the rcenary group I was a part of as well. IN my mind, no matter what happens, I have to go ho to protect my parents and the kind-hearted residents of our town.
I took the fastest carriage that can take the nearest possible point to our town. The fare was a bit expensive but I was in a hurry. It took three days to get to northern most territory, the city of Bragen. From there, I could only walk due to the restrictions on money. It would be several hours of walking and maybe running but I have good stamina so I can do it.
A few hours away from Bragen, the carriage I was riding had to stop for a bit and give way to three carriages that seed to be in a hurry. As it passed my position, I can clearly see the insignia of the Athanoviya empire on it. They seed to be as in a hurry as I am.
I couldn’t help but worry even more. Are they responding to an ergency? I could only hope that if it was one, it was not from Ersha.
I rested for half a day and also ate my first proper al in days in Bragen. I would have chosen not to do this detour but being in a bouncy carriage for three days resulted in consecutive sleepless nights as well. I feel like my body is about to give up and I don’t want to go to a possible fight when I am not in the best of shape.
Just as I alighted the carriage in Bragen to find a place to stay and eat, I saw the sa carriage that passed by several hours ago traveling at top speed to the direction of Hoffen City. I could help but wonder if the ergency was nearby and at the sa ti, why was there only one carriage? What happened to the other two?
After half a day’s of rest, I hurriedly looked for so carriage that can bring to Ersha for free. I just tried my luck since it is quite far by foot. By the grace of the deities, I found one that is going to a half way point between Bragen and Ersha to pick up so chopped firewood. The driver agreed to drop off in exchange for helping him load the chopped firewood into the carriage once we get to the area, a deal which I readily agreed to.
After over an hour, the carriage reached the halfway point and I finished loading the firewood as well just as the first light of day has started to appear in the sky. I thanks the driver once again and started interchanging sprinting and brisk walking my way to Ersha.
When I was about half a kiloter to Ersha, I was stunned as I saw a tall sturdy looking wooden wall standing on the area where my hotown should have been. I was only away for a little over two months so how co a finished wall is already there.
I couldn’t help but worry so I started sprinting again but just as I was a hundred ters away to what seems to be a gate, it suddenly closed with a loud thud. As I reached the gates, I started pounding at the gate and shouting at the top of my lungs for my parents or for anybody inside to let in.
