The cooking competition verdict had been delivered the previous evening, but Gordon Ramsey was still processing it the next morning in the way that principled people process things they can't fully argue with: by accepting the outco while quietly reserving the right to revisit the thodology.

"The presentation was worse," he said, over coffee.

"Yes," Leo agreed.

"Presentation matters."

"In restaurants."

Gordon looked at him. "You're saying it doesn't matter here."

"I'm saying the goal here was different." Leo set his mug down. "You were cooking for technique. I was cooking for the specific people at the table." He nodded toward the others filtering in from the hallway. "Mary had a bad cold three winters ago and still avoids anything with heavy cream. Ryan picks around ginger. You tell the food what it is. I ask the people what they need."

Gordon was quiet for a mont. Then: "That's going to be very annoying to think about for the next several days."

"Sorry."

He didn't sound sorry. Gordon noticed, and found he didn't mind.

Later, while the crew was setting up for the day's live stream segnt, Gordon pulled Leo aside on the porch.

"My daughter," he said. "She's sixteen. She's halfway through Anohana now and I've been told not to spoil anything." He paused. "She asked if you'd sign sothing for her. I'm asking now so I don't have to ask on cara and make it a mont."

Leo looked at him for a beat. "What's her na?"

"Tilly."

Leo took the small notebook Gordon was holding, clearly Tilly's, not Gordon' and wrote sothing on the inside front cover. He handed it back without showing what it said.

Gordon glanced at it on the way inside. It read: Tilly, nma's okay at the end. Don't worry. — Leo.

Gordon stood still for a mont. Then went inside and did not ntion it for the rest of the day.

At 7:30 that evening, the live stream began.

Episode four had resud from where they'd left it, the final sequence. The group in the forest, pursuing what they believed was nma. The way the cara held on Tsuruko, who hadn't moved, watching Yukiatsu's retreating back with an expression that contained five years of patient, private knowledge.

Then the figure in the trees. White dress. The group running toward it.

And the mont of recognition.

You're too tall. It won't work no matter how much you shave your legs.

At The Cabin, nobody spoke for several seconds.

"He was wearing the dress," Zoey said, at last, in the tone of soone confirming sothing they had already suspected and still weren't prepared for.

"He bought it himself," Asher said quietly. "Tsuruko followed him. She knew."

Mary pressed both hands flat on the table. "Five episodes. He's been doing this for five episodes."

"Longer than that," Leo said.

The comnt section was in a specific kind of chaos, not the aggressive chaos of a plot twist but the slower, more personal chaos of understanding sothing you hadn't wanted to understand:

[YUKIATSU WAS WEARING THE DRESS. I need the episode explanation RIGHT NOW.]

[Finn Blake didn't play that scene like a villain. He played it like soone who was trying to feel closer to sothing he lost. I can't be angry at him. I WANT to be angry at him.]

[Tsuruko knew. Tsuruko has known for how long? How long has she been watching him do this?]

[This isn't a ghost story anymore. This is five people who have been haunting each other for five years.]

The plan was straightforward: Island Retreat Season 6 airing on all platforms, with the usual viewer comntary running alongside. Leo had been a guest for four days. The ratings, Hayes knew, had broken the show's previous records on day one and hadn't co down.

At 8:14 PM, everything changed.

Director Hayes received the notification on his production tablet first, not because he was watching, but because Global Stream's legal liaison had flagged it as sothing he needed to know about imdiately. He read it twice, recalibrated his understanding of the evening, and walked over to where Leo was sitting with the expression of a man delivering unwelco news to a person he suspects will not react in a helpful way.

"There's a situation," Hayes said quietly.

"I see it," Leo said. He was already looking at his phone.

The post had gone up twelve minutes earlier on Instagram and X simultaneously. A verified account under the na Vanessa Cole, Leo's forr girlfriend, per the caption, had published a statent in four numbered points. Dostic violence. Financial manipulation. Using industry connections to suppress her career after their breakup. And a fourth allegation, carefully worded, about conduct with fans.

Each point ca with screenshots. Each screenshot had co from sowhere.

Within twenty minutes, four of the top ten trending topics on X were related to Vanessa Cole and Leo Vance. The fifth was Anohana episode four. The internet was, simultaneously, processing a ghost wearing a white dress in the woods and a celebrity scandal, and managing both with equal commitnt.

Hayes looked at Leo, who was reading through the allegations on his phone. His expression contained nothing.

"The live stream is still running," Hayes said.

"Good," Leo said.

"The legal team is-"

"Hayes." Leo looked up. "What do you need from tonight?"

Hayes blinked. He had expected panic, or anger, or the careful performance of neither. This was sothing else, genuine pragmatism, a man asking what the job required. "I need the live stream to continue and for you to not look rattled."

"That's easy," Leo said. "I'm not rattled." He stood up. "Give twenty minutes."

The comnt section of Island Retreat's live stream had beco two simultaneous conversations, one about Anohana and one about the trending news, weaving through each other in real ti.

[Episode five dropped and I've been sitting here for twenty minutes trying to explain to my roommate why I'm like this. She watched episode one. She's already not okay. This is Leo Vance's fault.]

[Soone explain to why #VanessaCole and #Anohana are both trending at #1 and #2 right now. What is happening.]

[The ghost story and the PR disaster. Leo Vance's Thursday evening. Incredible.]

Global Stream's executive team had been on a call for eleven minutes. The platform had an exclusivity deal with Celestial Peak worth a nine-figure sum. Anohana was currently their highest-performing limited series premiere in history. Their legal team was already reviewing Vanessa Cole's claims.

Their head of content, reaching Hayes by phone, said simply: "Is he handling it?"

Hayes looked across the cabin at Leo, who was pouring coffee with complete equanimity while Asher Reed watched him with the expression of a man waiting for sothing to catch fire.

"He's handling it," Hayes said.

He hung up. Leo sat back down. The live stream continued.

The allegations sat on trending. The show's episode four numbers climbed regardless, the fake nma scene had just dropped and the comnt thread had fractured into sothing between outrage and devastation. Yukiatsu in the woods. The white dress. Tsuruko who had known. The internet was not capable of looking away from either story.

Leo set his phone face-down and looked at the screen, where Finn Blake was standing in a forest in a white sundress and the world was finally understanding what had been wrong with Yukiatsu for five episodes.

He had known what was coming tonight. All of it.

He was just waiting for the right mont.
