Chapter 269 – Do you know how beautiful you are?

"Are you sure you’re not interested?" Cassius asked the driver, whose face had twisted unfortably for some reason.

"I’m sorry." She said in her strangely beautiful, hoarse voice, meeting his eyes through the mirror with her gray ones, "I can’t do that."

"Can’t, or don’t want to?" He asked again, arching a curious eyebrow.

The question seemed to strike something in her, her face spasming for a second before she caught herself, forcing a tense smile onto her heart-shaped pink lips.

They were full. They were beautiful.

’She really could make it as a model.’

"Maybe later." She said, drawing Cassius’s attention back to her words, "Maybe later, if the opportunity’s still open, I could do it. But not right now. I’m sorry. But would you allow me, sir, a way to contact you?"

"You don’t have a phone, do you?"

"I’ll ask my little brother to lend me his, if I ever need to call you."

"I’m a dangerously curious person, I admit...you have a brother?"

The driver smiled, amused by how self-aware her passenger was. But she didn’t dare say or do anything inappropriate.

Even without really knowing him, she could tell instinctively that the white-haired young man in front of her was no ordinary person.

His whole presence radiated nobility. And he was beautiful.

Far, far too beautiful.

’He somehow reminds me of someone. Cathy always talks about him...but I can’t remember the name?’

Her mind was too preoccupied with finding ways to make money to bother with much else.

At last, she shook her head and answered him:

"I do have a little brother, sir." She said, then something occurred to her, eyes lighting up, "Sir? Do you also take on male models?"

"Hm?" Cassius tilted his head, then nodded casually, "Of course. I do."

"Then could you give me a way to reach you? If you...um, if you think I’d do well, then he might too. He looks just like me."

"How old is he?"

"20?"

"Does he do anything, currently?"

"...hm." She grimaced, "let’s say he hasn’t found his passion yet?"

’So a lazy man leeching off his sister. Well, well, well.’

"Alright." Cassius said finally, not eager to get further involved. "Do you have paper and a pen?"

"Yes!" She said, eagerly rummaging through a drawer. A few seconds later, paper and a pen were in Cassius’s hands.

He jotted down Meadow’s business number and handed it back to her.

By then, they’d already arrived at LeBon.

"Call this number when you’re ready. The person there will take care of you."

"Oh." She let out an unexpectedly disappointed sound, "Not you?"

Cassius smiled, "Not me. But she’s a friend of mine, and she’s the one in charge." He pushed the door open, ready to step out and head to his meeting with the Twins.

But...

"Um, sorry, but," the driver smiled, embarrassed, her porcelain-white skin flushing faintly red, "will I see you again? I can be your driver, if you ever need to go anywhere around the Academy."

"I rarely go out." Cassius shook his head, "It’s not necessary. Thanks for the offer, though."

He pushed the door open further, stepping one foot outside.

And once more...

"Can I at least know your name?!" The driver blurted out again, hurried, wondering to herself why she was suddenly acting so unprofessional, "My name’s Aurora. Aurora Ardee Threeheart."

Her face broke into a small smile, her eyes smiling right along with her lips.

Cassius paused on the doorstep, turning his head back over his shoulder to spare her a glance.

He mirrored her smile and parted his lips:

"The name’s Cassius." he said, almost in a whisper, "Cassius Desdemona. Nice to meet you, Aurora."

His smile deepened.

"That’s a beautiful name you’ve got there."

Without waiting for a reply, he finally stepped out of the carriage and shut the door behind him. Then he summoned a black cane, missing the feel of walking with one.

Only then did Cassius make his way toward the three-story building ahead.

Inside the carriage, Aurora was still staring at the spot where Cassius had sat the entire ride.

She kept repeating the name Cassius Desdemona over and over. And the more she did, the more familiar it sounded.

Then everything clicked, and her eyes flew wide open.

"Cassius???" She blurted out, immediately yanking open another drawer and pulling out a photo.

The photo showed her alongside another woman with dark skin, gray hair, and blue eyes. That woman wore a T-shirt printed with the very same face as her passenger.

"It’s him..." Aurora whispered in awe, hands over her mouth, "It’s really him. Cassius Desdemona. I...I just talked with Angel? The most beautiful man of this generation? The Palatine? The Favored Son of the Desdemona? The...Dean’s First Disciple?"

Her whole body trembled as she looked again at the spot where he’d been sitting.

"...and he said my name is...beautiful?"

Aurora’s head spun dangerously, and for a moment she felt she might lose consciousness.

But she caught herself and drove off in a hurry.

She had to tell Cathy and Solaris!

She had to tell them that...

"...I met the Last Born of the Desdemona! And he said my name is beautiful!"

Suddenly, Aurora felt like her name had bee something more.

"Aurora Ardee Threeheart."

She giggled.

"That’s my name. And it’s beautiful."

Angel had said so, after all.

...

[...what was that?] Ananke asked, her lips twitching, as Cassius followed a rather old woman, his cane tapping a rhythmic sound against the golden carpet beneath them.

Strangely, that woman bore a striking resemblance to his classmate, Diaila Law.

’What do you mean?’

[With that driver. What were you doing?]

’Nothing?’ He tilted his head in confusion, ’I just tried to recruit her. She turned it down. That’s all.’

[Cassius, do you have any idea how beautiful you are?]

’Don’t hit on me. I’m married.’ He said, raising his hand to show off the ring.

Ananke bit back the urge to click her tongue, [You truly have no idea.]

’Well, I know I’m attractive. That’s it, though. I don’t spend my days admiring myself, and everyone around me is fairly good-looking too. People don’t react to me in any particularly unique way.’

[They’re Chosen Ones, of course they wouldn’t. That girl was a moner. Learn the difference. Don’t act so flirtatious with moners.]

’You sound like Klaus, just now.’ He laughed silently.

[...I’m serious.]

’And I heard you. I don’t think I was flirting, honestly. But I’ll be more careful.’

[You’re so troublesome, Cassius.]

’You mean my looks? Yes, definitely. And my charm stat just keeps climbing far too easily. Feels like the world wants me to be an Adonis.’

Ananke went still at that, then grimaced deeply, [I wouldn’t wish to bee that man, if I were you. I don’t envy him having to deal with those women.]

’Who—!’

[{Temptation Made Alive} and {Reluctant Queen of Death}.]

’Who are—!’

"We’ve arrived, sir." The woman who resembled Diaila Law said, gesturing to a door, "Your guests have been waiting inside for about ten minutes."

"Thank you, Miss...?" Cassius tried to fish for a name.

The old woman smiled sweetly, "Miss?" She giggled, "I don’t look that young."

"Are you accusing me of blindness?" He replied, feigning hurt, "I’m looking at someone plenty old enough to be called Miss."

"Then I suppose I can allow it. You may call me Miss Diary."

"Miss Diary, then." He nodded respectfully, "Thank you for showing me here."

Without waiting for a reply, he wrapped his free left hand around the doorknob and turned it.

The heavy door let out a weling creak as it swung open smoothly.

Giving Miss Diary one last nod, Cassius slipped inside and closed the door behind him.

His crimson eyes swept past everything else and landed instantly on the Faye Twins, parts of their bodies bandaged, eyes puffy and faintly bloodshot, hair disheveled.

Even their clothes looked disheveled.

They stood there staring at him in surprise, clearly not expecting him at all.

Silence filled the room.

Broken almost immediately by Cassius’s smooth voice.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting." He said, looking at both Twins, "I’m Cassius. I hear you have some interesting potions for me?"
