Chapter 800: Chapter 31: Battle to Defend the Umbrella Line (Part 1)

Zou Hai was exceedingly busy in the monitor room.

Currently, Gu Castle is in a state of total isolation!

Due to the sudden outbreak of the “Spiritual Poison,” there are new “suspected infections” every day being brought into the quarantine area. The available personnel within Gu Castle Fortress are already insufficient… and they’re decreasing even more!

The atmosphere of preparedness within the fortress is unprecedentedly tense.

Quasi-General has isolated himself in the attic study, leaving all the command responsibilities in the monitor room on Zou Hai’s shoulders. He hasn’t closed his eyes for two consecutive days… for a Spiritual Transcendent like him, this would normally be nothing, but every minute, there are new task directives and communication handovers. Gu Castle Fortress is hailed as the “throat of human fate,” and the arrival of this great storm will influence the entire North Continent frontline’s fate. Outside the fortress, a large group of Transcendents has already stationed.

However, Lin Lin has issued an order.

Seal the fortress, no entries or exits allowed!

These Transcendents are equipped with legion weapons, source material, and ample supplies, but unfortunately, they can only remain on standby outside the fortress gates…

If the infection rate of the “Spiritual Poison” shows a downward trend, even if not completely all infected areas are sealed, the Gu Castle side might consider opening the gates. But now the infection trend is increasingly severe; once the fortress replenishes its manpower, the “Spiritual Poison” might rapidly spread. By that point, rely accommodating and treating the wounded would overwhelm the fortress.

Currently, Gu Castle.

Is a truly isolated city.

“Mr. Deputy, there’s a call from the Third Legion.”

The operator in the monitor room suddenly received a call, looking tense, he quickly asked for instructions.

The Third Legion… that’s General Bai Xi’s unit.

This call is on a public channel; if chosen to be answered, its sound will be heard throughout the monitor room.

Zou Hai slightly frowned, pondered for a second, and nodded to indicate to answer it.

“Hello…”

A deep voice resonated within the monitor room.

It was a middle-aged man’s voice, rich and elegant, making everyone feel at ease.

His voice was very distinguishable.

As soon as he spoke, everyone knew who was on the other end of the communicator… known as the “Eye of the Third Legion,” Osmond.

Osmond was born in the Central Continent but ca to the North Continent as a child, living there for thirty years, followed the general in battles, experienced the North Continent Royal Family’s turbulent war, had impressive war achievents, glittering military exploits, and his power was profound and unfathomable. The na “Osmond” signifies “greatness” and “leader,” a born leader.

And he indeed achieved everything this na implied.

Now he is known to all, and recognized by everyone, in the Third Legion, as the man most likely to succeed the general’s position.

Zou Hai pressed his fingers against his forehead.

Just hearing this na made him feel a surge of pressure…

The general’s subordinates are like clouds, and top tier experts like Osmond, who stand out among thousands, generally would be assigned to independently guard a fortress, and only in rare circumstances would they personally take action, as their actions signify the “General’s” will.

“Deputy Zou Hai.”

Osmond’s voice was deep and elegant, “I am the ‘guardian’ closest to Gu Castle. The storm is approaching, and I hope to assist Gu Castle in countering it.”

Countering the storm…

Is this the general’s intention?

Zou Hai gritted his teeth and said, “Sorry… due to the ‘sudden epidemic disaster,’ Gu Castle cannot open its gates.”

“Understand.” Osmond’s voice remained calm, the higher-ups are all aware of the Spiritual Poison news: “But I hope you know one thing, once Gu Castle is breached, the entire North Continent frontline will face upheaval… tens of thousands of warriors might be forced to battle inland, and deploying the ‘Embers Plan,’ such an ultimate trump card, will bring unprecedented pressure to the North Continent.”

He wasn’t exerting pressure.

Instead, he was stating facts.

And Zou Hai understood the implication behind this call from Osmond.

In the face of two disasters… the North Continent high command can only make a choice, both sides of the scale are “casualties,” and this call subtly conveyed General Bai Xi’s stance.

The general believes that the “Source Material Storm” destroying the giant wall would bring a greater disaster.

Open Gu Castle’s gate.

First solve the most pressing problem.

As for the other side of the scale… it can only be resolved afterward, there’s no perfect choice in this world, no matter which side you choose, there will always be sacrifices.

Life and death, more and less, this is indeed a very brutal issue.

Both sides, are innocent.

“Mr. Osmond.”

A cool voice suddenly rang out in the monitor room.

Zou Hai turned back surprised.

A blond young man, at so point, had arrived here, and behind him stood seven elite mbers of the Investigation Corps Second Team.

A surprised voice ca from the communicator: “Zhong Yuan?”

If I’m not mistaken, the mission to suppress the Duolu River Disaster Realm just ended… this Investigation Corps’ Second Team leader should be resting.

How did they appear in Gu Castle?

“It’s .” Zhong Yuan took over and calmly said, “I won’t explain much about the specifics right now, as I’m located within Gu Castle… In my opinion, at this current stage, directly opening the fortress gates is not a good option. This ‘Spiritual Poison’ is not simple; it’s very similar to the power in the Duolu River Disaster Realm, it might be ‘a force of the sa origin.’ You can relay this ssage to the general; I think that opening Gu Castle’s gate might lead to a second unnecessary disaster.”

“We must take action sohow…”

Osmond paused.

Clearly, having heard Zhong Yuan’s words, the Eye of the Third Legion also showed so hesitation.

“I believe, as of now, Gu Castle still has a chance to resist this disaster… There are a total of one hundred and forty-nine Source Energy Boats, and two thousand three hundred Source Energy Cannons. If we can launch an attack outside the ‘Umbrella Defense Line,’ even without the aid of Deep Sea, there is still a chance to directly assault the storm and reduce its impact upon landing.”

Zhong Yuan calmly said, “We need ti to fully control the spread of the ‘Spiritual Poison,’ as long as the giant wall can hold during this period, then we can open the gate afterward.”

“…”

He wasn’t refusing support.

But hoped the Third Legion could give Gu Castle more ti.

“Understood.” Osmond said softly, “The storm will land within twelve hours, Gu Castle needs to continuously report the situation to … I’ve mobilized one hundred and twenty Source Energy Boats, these boats won’t land on the giant wall, and can engage in combat anyti.”

At his level, he no longer needs to repeatedly apply with the general.

He possesses the dispatch authority for the entire fortress.

The spread of the “Spiritual Poison” occurs through ntal contact between living beings, it’s an incomprehensible Transcendent power… and the most terrifying aspect is this “poison” might even infect the Deep Sea, further spreading through the deep water area, most of Gu Castle’s fortress’ region is currently under self-locking ‘intranet’ status.

Deep Sea only retains basic auxiliary functions.

In this situation.

What Gu Castle needs the most right now is “manpower,” due to the poison being uncontrolled, the Third Legion cannot enter the city, but the floating Source Energy Boats can directly reach the giant wall, providing fire support, it’s a blessing amidst misfortune indeed!

The phone call ended.

Everyone in the monitoring room breathed a sigh of relief.

Zou Hai looked fatigued as he glanced at the blond youth, “Thank you…”

“There’s no need to thank , I just held onto the right decision for you.” Zhong Yuan replied indifferently, then headed into the command room, where he stared at those “Heavenly Eyes” deployed outside the Umbrella Defense Line. He spent most of his ti here these past few days. As the Second Team Leader of the Investigation Corps, he holds a certain prestige in North Continent; Lin Lin handed over so command rights inside the fortress to him.

And the monitoring room at this mont indeed needed a “backbone” to support the situation.

“Are there no updates yet?”

Zou Hai also looked at the screens Zhong Yuan was observing.

The elite team executing the outpost mission from the Second Team… Just a short while ago, the link suddenly cut off in the “Book of Life and Death,” a scenario identical to when Hong Zhong executed a mission, which was understood as marking their successful entry into the labyrinth.

Fortunately, not long after.

The previously extinct spiritual aura of everyone revived once more.

Previously, only Hong Zhong experienced such a “revival”; this should an… they all escaped danger.

But subsequent circumstances turned dire; a massive storm appeared outside the giant wall, and the gestation and birth of the “Storm” occurred faster than anticipated, an utterly despairing piece of news.

Based on the originally planned return tiline, this team likely already encountered the storm.

Yet at this mont, a “miracle” occurred.

The Book of Life and Death did not show any mber’s spirit extinguished; this ans they all survived!

But… now the storm is nearly upon Gu Castle.

Their figures have yet to appear.

Zou Hai understood, if the storm reaches a certain range of the ‘Umbrella Defense Line,’ then Gu Castle will undoubtedly execute the most severe defensive counterattack… And at that point, when all floating platforms close and retract, even if this squad arrives at the defense line, they won’t have a chance to enter.

And after Osmond’s call.

The Source Energy Boats around Gu Castle began mobilizing, advancing towards the giant wall.

War, is on the verge of erupting.

The remaining ti for the explorer squad began to be counted in “seconds.”

“Mr. Deputy… ‘Heavenly Eye’ transmitted the image!”

Soone slamd a fist on the desktop in the central control room’s large screen.

The monitor’s voice was exceptionally excited.

The image refreshed, enlarged, then enlarged again.

After a dozen tis of zooming in, the “Storm” at the horizon beca clearly visible, a devouring cyclone sucking everything into it, along the path, mountain ranges and ridges crumbled.

And before the storm.

A group of figures were racing along.

Compared to the storm sweeping across the earth, their forms were very small, very small… Even after zooming dozens of tis, remained like tiny ants, unclear in appearance, only a general shape seen.

This was the explorer squad on the labyrinth mission!

They were desperately sprinting before the storm.

“Open the ‘Umbrella Defense Line’!”

Zhong Yuan’s golden eyes burst with an unusual brilliance, he felt the blood in his body boiling, his voice rising passionately, “Investigation Corps Second Team, listen to orders… Set off imdiately, follow to the giant wall, and pick them up!!!”
