[ FORCED FULL SYNC — INITIATED ]

[ Warning. Catastrophic. ]

[ Estimated host capacity at this load: five seconds. ]

[ Past five seconds: dantian rupture. Heart failure. Death. ]

The numbers arrived faster than Lin Xuan could have read them, but Lin Xuan was not the one reading them.

Mira already had the count.

Five seconds was less than she would have asked for. Five seconds was what the body would give her before it stopped being a body. She could spend them pulling Lin Xuan back from the wall and running, which wouldn’t save him because Master Hu would catch them before they cleared the mouth of the alley. Or she could spend them doing the one thing five seconds was good for.

She picked option two.

The cascade opened.

The body of Lin Xuan, pinned against the brick a heartbeat earlier, lifted off the wall under no power that anyone in the alley had supplied. The blood that had been dripping from his lip stopped halfway down and went back the way it had co. His ribs slid into place with a noise that had nothing to do with bone. His pupils took the color of the panel border from the override, the color his second-life eyes had no na for.

The hair around his shoulders rose two fingers off the cloth.

Master Hu took half a step back.

It was the first half-step backward of his career.

"What are you? What the fuck are you!?" The weariness of the last hour was gone from his voice. The professional cadence had cracked sowhere between his throat and his teeth. "This was supposed to be an easy job..."

The body of Lin Xuan moved. One pace forward. The cobble under the right foot didn’t crack from weight. It cracked because the space the foot occupied had beco heavier than any space in the alley had a right to be, and the stone was the first thing under that space.

Four seconds.

The voice that ca out of Lin Xuan’s throat was almost his and not. "Sorry, old man. Forty years of work. We’re wrapping it up tonight."

Master Hu’s right hand moved toward the inner sleeve. The talisman was there. He had carried it for twenty-seven years and never used it. His hand was faster than most n’s hands and slower, in this mont, than the hand of a man underwater.

"Wait, what..."

He did not finish the word.

The body of Lin Xuan raised the right arm at an angle that belonged to no Form in the Seven Dragon Sword Art, and the arm described a diagonal across the air between them.

Half a ter.

Possibly less.

The diagonal did not touch Master Hu in the way a blade touched flesh. It passed through the space where his body stood, and at the instant it did, Master Hu stopped being a body.

The robe, the lined face, the thin mouth opening on the second word of his question, the talisman half-drawn from the sleeve, the forty years of careful contacts, all of it ca apart without blood.

There was no wound nor collapse.

For one breath he remained there in pieces too small for the eye to hold, dust and pale ash and threads of ruined Qi suspended in the shape of a man. Then the shape lost its argunt with the world.

The air took him.

What had been Master Hu scattered across the alley in a faint gray drift, and the place where he had stood was empty before the sound reached the walls.

Behind him, the brick wall remained whole.

That was worse, sohow.

The attack had not cut through the alley. It had not broken stone, split wood, or carved a path for the eye to follow. It had chosen one thing inside the world and removed it.

Two seconds.

The body of Lin Xuan turned, slowly, and lowered the arm.

[ Sync collapsing. Returning host capacity. ]

The cascade closed in reverse.

The blood that had gone back inside the body ca out again, in larger quantity, from the lip and the nose and one ear. The pupils paled back to nineteen years old. The two ribs Mira had clicked into place gave way again with the soft small sound of bone that had been asked to lie about itself for one minute longer than bone could lie.

The right knee folded first. Then the left. Then the palms.

The body of Lin Xuan went down on its side at the center of the alley with four corpses around it and one unconscious girl against the brick, and lay there breathing in a rhythm that was barely a rhythm.

[ I’m sorry, Xuan. ] Mira’s voice was small now, tucked back inside. [ I went over budget. ]

The panel folded into the corner of his vision and dimd.

The alley went quiet.

For a long stretch, nothing in it moved except the breathing of the boy on the cobble.

Then the disturbed air at the entrance stilled too, the way air stilled when sothing walked through it on a stride that did not announce itself, and a footfall arrived against the stone.

It stopped at the edge of the lane.

Took stock.

Four bodies in the patterns of n who had each died in the middle of moving. A girl against the side wall, breathing slow. A boy on the cobble at the center, alive, just.

The footfall continued. It crossed the alley without breaking pace until it reached the boy. A hand ca down to the side of his neck, found the pulse, and stayed there until the pulse confird itself a second ti.

Above the boy, in a voice the alley had not heard tonight, low and tired and certain:

"Xuan’er."

A second footfall arrived behind the first. Lighter, bringing a cool breeze, not from Skyedge. The robe of Frostmoon Ridge passed Lin Xuan without stopping and knelt beside the girl against the wall.

"What happened here, Lin Zhen."

Lin Zhen kept his hand on his son’s neck. "I don’t know. But first we need to help our children."
