Adelyn hadn’t ant for the conversation to turn serious. She had only said whatever ca to mind —anything that would give her an easy way out.

But she wouldn’t lie—

For a brief mont, she had beco serious when Nigel built up that suspense around why Dylan chose to stay instead of walking away from her.

It was sothing she had been trying to understand from the very beginning. Yet no explanation had ever truly made sense.

She had taken advantage of him ...

Shouldn’t he have had every reason to discard her?

Then why had he let her audacity slide?

When Nigel claid he understood the reason, she had almost believed him.

But when she finally heard what he said—

Her lips pressed into a thin line as she stared at him.

"Calling a devil is one thing," she said, "but how can you call him a devil as well? Do you even know who he is?"

Nigel shifted slightly in his seat before picking up his fork again.

"I don’t need to know who he is to tell what he is."

With that, he sliced into a piece of tender at and placed it in his mouth, completely unbothered.

Adelyn narrowed her eyes, glaring at him.

"Cub, you really do act overly confident at tis when you shouldn’t ..."

He lifted his gaze to et hers,

... and she raised a challenging brow.

"Don’t you want to live?"

"What did I do?" he asked, as if genuinely confused. "I only said what you asked for."

Shrugging, he added, "If you didn’t want to hear it, you shouldn’t have asked in the first place."

"You—"

Adelyn pointed a finger at him, but no words ca out.

In the end, she simply closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"Fine. I won’t hold you accountable this ti, considering you made such a good al today. But be careful with what you say next ti. I might not be in a good mood to let it slide."

Nigel looked at her but said nothing further.

He had already said more than enough. If he went any further —he feared he might reveal sothing that would only complicate everything.

Just as they finished dinner—

The doorbell rang.

Both of them paused.

They exchanged a quick glance before Adelyn spoke.

"I’ll go check. Just help put the dishes in the sink —I’ll clean them later."

Nigel nodded, watching as she walked toward the door.

Adelyn checked the ti on her way.

It wasn’t too late ... but it wasn’t exactly early either.

At this hour, she rarely had visitors.

So who could it be?

Her expression shifted as a realization struck her —there were only two people who would show up unannounced at a ti like this.

And the mont she thought of them, a complicated mix of emotions stirred within her.

Still, she didn’t dwell on it. Instead, she quickened her steps and reached the door.

She pulled it open —expecting to see the Big Devil.

But the face that greeted her ... wasn’t his.

Her brows furrowed slightly, though she quickly composed herself.

"Yes?"

"Ms. Grace?" the man outside asked —as if confirming her identity.

Adelyn gave him a brief glance before nodding.

"Yes ... that’s . How may I help you??"

The man smiled imdiately.

"Hello, Ms. Grace," he said, introducing himself, "I’m Charles David, the managerial secretary of this apartnt complex. I heard you recently moved in, so I ca to greet you."

It didn’t sound entirely inappropriate—

But it didn’t feel entirely right either for a residential secretary to show up like this.

Still, Adelyn offered him a polite smile.

"Hello, Mr. David. Please, co in."

She stepped aside to let him enter.

Charles didn’t refuse.

He walked in, his eyes scanning the apartnt with quiet curiosity —as though searching for sothing.

Adelyn noticed it but didn’t point it out.

Instead, she followed behind him, guiding him to the sofa and gesturing for him to sit.

As he settled down, he spoke again.

"You’ve decorated the place quite well, Ms. Grace. These furnishings look exceptional—the style, the quality ... Where did you get them?"

Adelyn let her gaze sweep around the room for a mont.

There was nothing particularly remarkable about the furniture.

It was simple. Basic. Functional.

Yet hearing him praise it as if it were sothing luxurious only made her more curious about his intentions.

Turning back to him, she smiled.

"Oh, these aren’t from any particular store. I just—"

"Auction house?"

He cut her off abruptly.

Adelyn blinked, clearly caught off guard.

"Heh?"

Charles quickly smiled, trying to smooth it over.

"I an —did you get them from an auction house?"

She tilted her head slightly, studying him.

"These pieces look like antiques —quite old in style. So I thought ..."

"No," she interrupted this ti. "They’re not antiques. I just found them online and rented them."

"You rented them?"

He sounded genuinely surprised, as though he hadn’t expected her to do sothing like that.

However, Adelyn didn’t mind confirming it to him again. So, she nodded lightly, saying,

"Mhm. If you like the style, you can find similar ones there. They have quite a few options."

Even though she could tell that wasn’t his real interest, she played along anyway.

Charles watched her carefully, as if trying to confirm sothing.

But after hearing that she had rented the furniture—

His certainty wavered.

After all, what kind of wealthy heiress would rent furniture?

Wouldn’t soone like that prefer to buy new pieces —and replace them whenever needed?

"Mr. David," Adelyn said softly when she noticed his silence stretching too long, "if there’s sothing you want to ask, you can do so directly."

Her smile remained gentle—

But her eyes were sharp.

"Beating around the bush will only leave you more confused."

The secretary felt embarrassed after being seen through. He tried to avoid her eyes, but he couldn’t continue it for long.

Finally, mustering up, he spoke, "Ms. Grace, may I know what your background is? Are you soone from a rich family, coming to live here to experience life?"
