Love Across the Light Years -The Devil CEO Indulges My Lies. Chapter 83: Promise to make it up later
Adelyn stilled.
For a long mont, she couldn’t move at all.
Her entire body felt frozen —paralyzed —while her heart pounded wildly against her chest.
This ...
What just happened?
She couldn’t process it until she heard him say —
"Do your best."
Her pupils dilated as realization slowly sank in.
She looked up at him, completely speechless.
Wait ... really?
This was his way of wishing her luck?
Before she could react —before she could even form a proper response —
"Adelyn!"
The voice ca from behind
And she recognized it instantly.
Alia.
Her body stiffened at once.
Did she see them?
The re thought made her tense because if Alia had seen them, there was no way she would be able to explain things to her.
"Soone is looking for you," Dylan said, his gaze shifting past her.
She looked up at him again, and the certainty in his eyes told her everything.
He had seen Alia.
Adelyn coughed lightly, rubbing the tip of her nose as she took a small step back.
"Yes ... it must be Alia," she replied, deliberately brushing aside what had just happened.
Gesturing vaguely toward the building, she added, "I—I should go first. Otherwise, she might co looking for here, and that will only make the situation difficult."
She stepped back again and quickly repeated.
"Thanks once again, Mr. Warren."
Then, without waiting for another second, she turned on her heels and hurried away.
She didn’t dare look back.
Not even once.
Dylan watched her retreating figure, his lips curving into a faint smirk —one that carried a quiet, satisfied amusent.
"Dada ..."
Eira’s soft voice broke the silence once Adelyn disappeared from sight. "Can we wait for Mama?"
Dylan turned around to look at her. He noted the emotion in her eyes but shook his head, replying, "She wouldn’t like that."
At that, Eira’s expression dimd slightly.
But she didn’t argue, nor did she insist.
She simply nodded in understanding ... and then settled back in her seat, sitting quietly.
Dylan watched her. He didn’t know how to comfort people —not even his own daughter.
Yet, he tried.
"You’ll et her again," he said, his voice calm.
Eira didn’t look at him, but she nodded again, as if confirming that she understood.
And in truth, she did.
She hadn’t forgotten that Adelyn had said they would et again.
But no one specified when.
Now, she couldn’t help but wonder —
When would she see her Mama again?
Would it be really soon?
Or would she have to wait a long ti?
What if ... her Mama forgot her again?
The thoughts only made her heart ache more.
But she didn’t say anything out loud. Instead, she simply sat with them, trying to find the answers on her own.
—————
anwhile, on the other side —
Adelyn didn’t realize how her vague promise had left the little girl unsettled. If she had known, she might have chosen her words more carefully.
But the mont had passed —and she remained unaware.
As she walked towards the audition building, Alia caught up to her halfway and gently grabbed her arm.
"Adelyn, where are you rushing off to like that?"
Adelyn stopped and looked at her, pausing a second as if considering the answer. "For the auditions," she said, "Are we here for that?"
Alia pursed her lips, but didn’t dwell on it. Instead, she asked, "How did you get here?"
Her gaze flicked behind Adelyn —toward the direction she had co from.
"And who was that person with you?"
"The person?" Adelyn repeated.
Alia nodded. "Yeah, I just saw you standing with him there. Because of the distance —and the trees in between —I couldn’t see clearly."
Hearing that, Adelyn felt a quiet sense of relief.
"He was no one," she replied, keeping her expression calm and casual. "A cab driver."
"A cab driver?" Alia repeated, her eyes narrowing a little.
But Adelyn remained composed.
"If not a cab driver, who else do you think would take the trouble to drop here, Sister Alia?"
That made sense.
Alia couldn’t refute.
Nodding, she said. "Alright. Now that you’re here, let’s go inside."
Adelyn humd softly, before the two of them turned and walked in together.
—————
Inside, Alia went to check with the crew. After confirming them of Adelyn’s arrival, she returned and said, "You can rest a while first. They still need so ti to finalize the list. Once that’s done, they’ll let us know your slot."
Adelyn nodded in understanding.
Just then, from the corner, she heard soone say —
"I heard even Clara Scott has co for the audition today. She is aiming for the lead role. Do you think they will choose her as the female lead?"
"Not very sure," another replied. "But she is quite a capable actress. Her talent doesn’t need proving after all the awards she’s won in recent years. Still, this is Director Rhodes. No one really knows what he’s looking for."
"Exactly," another voice replied. "And it’s not just Clara. Several top artistes are here today for the lead role. With all of them competing, the selection won’t be easy. I heard the expectations from the lead roles are even higher."
Adelyn listened silently.
And so did Alia.
Alia wasn’t particularly interested in who would get the lead role. All she cared about was Adelyn getting selected for sothing —anything. So that they could at least begin from sowhere.
Placing a hand on Adelyn’s shoulders, she said lightly, "Don’t get nervous. You are anyway not going for the lead role. Those top players aren’t your competition right now."
Adelyn didn’t respond.
She simply smiled and nodded.
Truthfully, she wasn’t at all nervous.
It was just that hearing Clara’s na had stirred a mory from the past, making it resurface again quietly.
"Adelyn ... we know you’re capable. But right now, your capability is only making Clara feel insecure. She thinks she doesn’t belong in this family ... Can you give in to her just once? Mom promises she’ll make it up to you later."
