He clung to those mories and the gentle voice that often echoed in his ears for eight long years, through so many seasons.
Waiting was his commitnt, as he persisted through thousands of days and nights with no clear purpose, not knowing how long he might wait, lost in the vast galaxy of ti, waiting and waiting.
Finally, in the eighth year, he awaited her return. But this ti, how long would he be left in aimless waiting after her departure?
Arlo Seys placed the chestnut cake and mille-feuille on the coffee table and gave a bitter smile, the sorrow in his eyes deepening.
The more he looked at those things he had brought back specially, the more they seed an eyesore. Arlo reached out to grab them, intending to throw them in the trash bin....
Just as he was about to let go and drop them into the trash, a voice rang out.
"Arlo Seys, you’re back?"
Arlo froze with the food bag mid-air above the trash bin, unbelievingly turning his head toward the voice, and saw Ariel Morris standing on the stairs, rubbing her sleepy eyes while looking at him.
Arlo’s gaze swept over with a mixture of surprise and lingering coldness in his eyes, which instantly chased away Ariel’s drowsiness. She straightened up, "I’ve been well-behaved today, slept all day without wandering around or touching your stuff. You’re looking at like this, and it’s making nervous."
Arlo turned his gaze back, nonchalantly putting back the items he was about to throw away onto the coffee table, masking his fleeting embarrassnt with an indifferent expression.
"Have you eaten?" Ariel moved down the stairs toward him.
Arlo responded with a flat "Hmm," then casually glanced at Ariel, asking noncommittally, "Didn’t you eat?"
Ariel nodded, "I just woke up; my stomach feels a bit uncomfortable."
Arlo’s lips pressed into a line, "You slept at ho all day?" So, she hadn’t left after all.
"Yeah, I’m feeling hungry now, so I ca down to make so noodles. Arlo Seys, why are you back so late?" Ariel got up and poured herself a cup of warm water, casually asking, "What’s in the bag? I saw you were about to throw it away."
Arlo’s face showed a trace of embarrassnt, quickly concealed, his voice sounding detached, almost emotionless, "I went back to the old house today, and the housekeeper made a lot of food, so I packed so to bring back."
"Food?" Ariel’s eyes glistened with interest as she glanced at the contents of the bag on the coffee table. Having slept all day, she was really famished, and just hearing the word ’food’ made her hunger pangs intensify.
Arlo let out a soft "Hmm," and when he caught a glimpse of the hungry glint in her eyes, he felt a subtle sense of lightness and joy within. He took a look at Ariel, then rose indifferently and headed upstairs.
His departure made Ariel quite happy. As she sneaked a look at Arlo’s figure disappearing at the top of the stairs, she imdiately reached for the food bag and opened it.
The sight of the mille-feuille and chestnut cake left Ariel utterly shocked.
