Seeing Arthur standing in front of the liquor cabinet, she snapped at him with ill temper, "She's waiting on her son in law, not on you. Are you a dead man or what? Can't you even get the bowls?"
Her attitude toward her father in law remained perpetually harsh. Arthur was not a man without a temper.
In the past, a quarrel would have certainly erupted, but now Arthur said absolutely nothing and went directly to fetch the bowls and chopsticks.
The primary reason for this change was none other than Luis. The second son in law's status within the household was now so elevated that Arthur had no desire to argue in front of him.

With the son in law backing her up like this, Arthur simply had to obediently swallow this resentnt, allowing Ruth to finally hold her head high and feel a long overdue sense of triumph.

"Yes, Mom, this was offered by our brother in law to honor us anyway. It's perfect timing for us to have a good drink tonight and really enjoy ourselves."
Nancy was also putting in considerable effort to diate and keep the peace.
Everyone's glass was filled to the brim. Arthur's mood was also quite elevated and enthusiastic.
The second son in law was not only promising but also knew how to navigate social situations with grace. The matters concerning the loan and the acquisition of the car had been kept completely under wraps, ensuring that Arthur wouldn't lose face in front of this shrew of a woman.
On top of that, the bar had helped offload that batch of mineral water, leaving his financial situation sowhat more comfortable. At the very least, out of the past several years, this year had been the least financially strained.
After eating and drinking for a while, the mother and daughter duo beca particularly animated when discussing the day's events.
Arthur then uttered a sentence that actually sounded like sothing a decent human being would say. In a low, asured tone, he stated, "In a little while, I'll call a few guys over. They can spend the night in the car. If we need them tomorrow morning, we'll just have them co on up. We absolutely cannot allow ourselves to be taken advantage of."

Arthur proceeded to make a phone call, presumably to so of the low level thugs working at his company.
Upon hearing this, Mother-in-law Ruth looked at him with a beaming, amiable expression. With her own hands, she poured him a drink, a gesture that seed almost like a form of reward.
In that brief span of ti, the excitent had driven the four of them to finish off a one and a half catty bottle of foreign liquor. Nancy imdiately opened another bottle and then discreetly signaled to Luis with her eyes.
Luis was fully aware of what she was thinking. Her resistance to the idea of her father keeping a mistress was actually quite minimal.
This was because, during her childhood, not only had she received the complete love of both her parents, but the mistress had also taken her out to play and bought her quite a few things.
