Dark stood in the middle of it and felt the end of the borrowed ti arriving. He was ready to say goodbye, yet right then his eyes snapped open with urgency and alarm.

A murky darkness leaked from their edges, seeping outward from the corners in thin, living threads that moved against no wind and followed no gravity, curling into the air around his face with the purposeful quality of sothing that had been contained and was now finding the gaps in its container.

Dark’s face, which had held its calm and easy expression through everything that had preceded this mont, through the entire engagent, through the battle and the dying domain and the ending of Envy’s existence, moved through emotions with the rapid, uncontrolled sequence of a mind that had just received information it had not been prepared to receive.

Confusion arrived first, genuine and unguarded, the expression of sothing encountering a fact that did not fit within any frawork it had available.

Surprise followed, deeper than the confusion, widening his eyes in the particular way of soone who has just realized that what they are confused about is real.

And then disbelief settled across his features and stayed there, the emotion of sothing that has verified the fact twice and still cannot fully integrate it into what it knows about the world.

"What?" The word ca out barely above a murmur, carrying the weight of soone who had asked it internally several tis already and was only now letting it beco sound. "How could this have happened?"

The question hung in the dissolving space.

Then, as though the answer had been delivered directly into his ear by sothing that did not need a voice to communicate, his expression changed again.

What replaced the disbelief was pure anger.

Not the cold, controlled anger of sothing that has been offended and is deciding how to respond. The raw, imdiate, uncontained fury of sothing that has just understood what has been done and cannot believe it has been done and is outraged in the most fundantal way available to it.

"HOW COULD YOU DO THIS?" The roar tore through the dissolving domain with a force that stopped the dissolution entirely.

The crumbling pieces of the mirror surface held in place. The fragnting reality ceased its unraveling, and the entire constructed space suspended itself in a held breath, as though the world itself had decided that this particular sound warranted a pause in everything else before it continued.

"YOU MADMAN." The darkness spilling from his eyes had changed.

It no longer carried the pure, clean quality of the darkness that had been his throughout the engagent. It was murky now, writhing at its edges, alive in a way that suggested it was not entirely under the authority of the thing it was spilling from, twisting against itself with the agitation.

"YOU DID THE UNTHINKABLE." His voice broke on the last word, not with grief but with the particular fracture of a fury so complete that even the chanism of speech could not fully contain it.

"WHY?" The word ca out enormous and then fell into silence, the question addressed to sothing that was not present in any way that could answer, hurled into the dissolving space the way questions are hurled when the asking of them is the only thing left to do.

No answer ca. Nothing shifted in response to the demand.

What changed instead was his skin.

The obsidian surface of it began to writhe, the darkness moving beneath it in waves, the flesh under the skin responding to sothing deeper than the exterior, squirming with the urgent, contained energy of sothing that wanted to tear free and beco sothing else entirely, sothing that the words unspeakable existed specifically to avoid having to describe.

His body had beco the site of a war between what it currently was and what it was being pulled toward, the pull growing stronger with each cycle, the resistance holding it back for a mont before the pull surged again, and the resistance had to find more ground to stand on.

Dark stopped speaking.

He turned every available resource inward and began to resist with everything he had. The changes suppressed themselves under the force of that resistance, receding to the edges, the writhing stilling, the darkness in his skin settling.

For a mont, it held.

Then the pull grew more intense, and the cycle began again, the resistance and the surging and the holding and the surging, repeating in the way that all battles of this kind repeat.

A smile crept across his face.

It lasted less than a second before it was gone, vanished as quickly as it had appeared, as though the face that produced it had borrowed the expression from sowhere it had no right to borrow from and returned it the mont the loan was called in.

With it, the darkness began to fade.

The murky, writhing threads that had been spilling from his eyes thinned and retreated, drawing back into the edges they had erged from, the contaminated quality of them dissolving as they went.

The obsidian darkness of his skin followed, bleeding away from the surface in the sa gradual way, revealing the original underneath in pieces until the original was all that remained.

Slate dark skin. The face the world knew.

"I am Alex Crawford."

The words ca out with the determined, repeated quality of soone using language as an anchor, driving it into the ground of their own identity to have sothing to hold onto while the confusion between what they were and what they had been asked to be finished resolving itself.

"I am Alex Crawford. I am Alex Crawford. I am Alex Crawford."

He said it againa nd again, each repetition slightly steadier than the one before it, the mountain-like weight that had been pressing down across his mind lifting increntally with each iteration, the confusion between being Dark and being Odysseus and being Alex dissolving in the sa gradual way that the darkness had dissolved, until what remained was simply the truth of who was standing there and the certainty that went with it.

He stopped.

He looked around.

The headless corpse of what had been Envy lay on the shattered mirror surface, enormous and motionless, the impossible assembled form that had been put together at the cost of everything its occupant had been willing to pay, now simply present in the way that things were present after they were finished.

Alex looked at it and smiled, brief and without performance, the smile of soone who enjoyed it imnsely but didn’t have the ti to savour it, before moving on to the next thing.

The darkness beneath his feet shifted.

It spread outward and then drew upward, and from within it rose the ornate coffin, chains hanging loose at its sides, the runic seals dark and dormant but present, the polished surface reflecting nothing, the sa as it had always been.

Alex did not pause to take stock or mark the mont or allow himself any of the space that the magnitude of what had just happened might have argued he had earned.

He stepped into the coffin without ceremony, and before he had fully settled into its velvet interior, the lid slid closed above him. The chains that hung at its sides snapped into place with the efficiency of things returning to their natural position, the links engaging and tightening in their practiced sequence.

The runic seals ca alive, their ancient script glowing faintly against the dark surface of the coffin.

The darkness around the coffin rose and gathered, pulling inward and upward, coalescing into the rough suggestion of a human form around the coffin’s surface, shaping itself into the approximation of a person.

The coffin vanished into the pool of darkness, as darkness gave way to pale white skin, almost colorless, leaving it white as bleached stone, the look of soone on the edge of death.

The facial features settled into the perfect face of Alex, his armor from before cloaking him like a second skin, and just as it finished, he fell to one knee.

Alex’s eyes were open, wide and fixed on nothing, his expression carrying the particular blankness of soone whose mind was present but not yet fully operational, still finding its way back from the distance it had traveled.

Around him, what remained of the domain finally restarted its patient dissolution, the clicking and clattering of the shattering mirror surface filling the air.

The sound continued for a ti, each crack finding its neighbor, each fragnt releasing the one beside it, until the whole of the constructed space had resolved itself into the void that surrounded it.

The veil of the pocket dinsion stretched thin.

Then thinner.

Then it dissolved entirely, opening to the outside world, making Alex clench his jaw as he forced himself to his feet and dragged his body with sheer will towards the corpse of Envy.
