On her eighth day trapped in the dical departnt, Evelyn Ford was resting in the utility room when she unexpectedly saw Ronan Kendrick.

He had just pushed open the glass window when Evelyn pulled out her knife and slashed at him. If Ronan hadn’t reacted so quickly, one of his hands would have probably been chopped off.

"What are you doing here? Why are you back?"

Ronan jumped into the storage room, closed the window, and sat down right on the floor.

"As long as you’re still alive, I can rest easy."

Evelyn’s lips twitched into a smirk. "Oh, thanks. It’s terrible in here, but I’m hard to kill. Still kicking."

"Pack your things. I’m getting you out of here."

Evelyn sized him up from head to toe. "Did you just get back? You sll like blood. How did you know I was here?"

Ronan looked up at her. "Where else would you be?"

Evelyn rembered him once saying she had a scent he could sll and track. ’So, did he find by following my scent?’

"Ronan, so many people have died in the base these past few days. Even if it were a terminal illness, there should have been ti and hope for a cure. But regrettably, we couldn’t find any way to save them. We could only watch as they died."

"Natural disasters are unavoidable. Don’t dwell on it."

"What’s the situation outside now?"

"They’re screening every building. Anyone who feels unwell is forcibly sent here. The base has also started purifying the water."

’So they’re not just sitting on their hands.’ Evelyn felt a lot more relieved.

Ronan suddenly took out a dagger and slit his wrist. Seeing his blood well up, Evelyn, to her sha, swallowed hard.

"Drink."

"I feel like a vampire right now."

"It’s fine. I have plenty of blood."

Evelyn glanced at his eyes. Thankfully, his colored contacts were still securely in place.

"You must have died from stupidity in your past life."

’If his blood’s healing properties were discovered, he’d probably be taken away to be used as a test subject or turned into an antidote.’

Evelyn sucked at the wound, drinking his blood until the gash began to heal. Only then did she lift her head.

A sar of fresh blood stained the corner of her mouth, making her look even more like a vampire. Ronan raised a hand and roughly wiped it away, then sniffed the air around her.

Evelyn felt a little awkward. She hadn’t washed up in days.

"Aren’t you leaving yet?"

"I’m taking you with ." They were currently on the fourth floor. With his skills, it would be easy to get her down.

Evelyn took out ten boxes of special-purpose dicine. This was what Quincy had helped her find when they scavenged for supplies at Seascape Corp. She didn’t know if the dicine would work and had agonized over it for days before deciding to bring it out.

’There can’t be any more deaths. The bodies are piling into mountains. These were her people; she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.’

"Take these eight boxes and put them in the base’s water reservoir. As for these two boxes in my hand, I’ll figure out a way to get the people here to take them."

She didn’t know if it would be effective, but Kevin Holloway’s words had reminded her. It was a special-purpose dicine; it might be able to kill these mutated parasites. She still had half of it left in her space—her own escape route.

"Okay."

Ronan took the boxes without asking any questions.

"If it doesn’t work, we’ll leave the base. If it does, I’ll leave the dical departnt once this is all over."

Whenever Evelyn closed her eyes, her mind filled with images of the people who had died here and the pools of blood on the floor.

Even with her strong fortitude, she couldn’t bear to stay here any longer.

After Ronan left, Evelyn dozed off for a bit in the utility room.

The workshop for boiling herbal dicine was on the fifth floor. When Evelyn arrived, the staff mber in charge of brewing was dozing off at their post. Evelyn took out five pills and dropped them into the large pot that was currently simring.

That night, the herbal dicine was distributed to the patients. Half an hour later, everyone began to have diarrhea and vomit. By the next day, the patients’ spirits had started to improve, and color had returned to their faces.

"Did they heal on their own?" Dr. Miller found it incredible, but despite running tests for half the day, they couldn’t find anything.

Seeing that the special dicine was working, Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief.

anwhile, Kevin Holloway, who was on the top floor, suddenly fell ill. Just like the previous patients, he started convulsing, vomiting blood, and slamming his head against the wall.

Dr. Miller boldly had soone force-feed him the dicine. After vomiting for a while, Kevin Holloway’s complexion improved as well.

Before, when he said there were worms in his body, everyone thought he was lying just to cause trouble. They never expected it was actually true.

"His incubation period was so long, and the worms he coughed up were as big as earthworms. It’s terrifying."

The dical departnt successfully brought the parasite under control. The base withdrew the personnel stationed outside, and after the water was purified, the food delivered to the dical departnt started to include vegetables and stir-fried pork.

Although people were still being sent over, every patient who arrived was successfully cured. The atmosphere of despair that had shrouded the base finally began to dissipate.

But what Evelyn hadn’t expected was that Rachel Xavier would be sent in again.

The person who brought her this ti was Jill Lynch. Clearly, Jill knew Evelyn was here and had rushed over, eager to reconnect, only to be coldly ignored by Evelyn.

Rachel started vomiting as soon as she was brought in. In just the few days since they’d last seen her, she had lost so much weight she was practically skin and bones.

Evelyn saw her vomit a piece of rotten flesh teeming with worms. The people nearby recoiled in terror, and even Evelyn was startled.

"How could this happen?"

"What did she eat or drink?"

Jill was too frightened by Evelyn’s cold glare to speak. Evelyn roared at her again.

"Did she drink unpurified water again?"

"No, after she went back, she ate two cans of food. She didn’t drink any water."

The color drained from Evelyn’s face as she suddenly thought of sothing.

"Force-feed her the dicine."

The dicine contained the special-purpose pills, but it had no effect on Rachel after she drank it. She vomited up more chunks of flesh, and finally, her eyes stared blankly as she stopped breathing.

Evelyn turned to run, but Jill grabbed her and held on tight. Evelyn kicked her away and, ignoring the administrators and security personnel heading toward her, bolted straight out of the dical departnt building.

’More than ten days. Trapped in here.’

Along the way, she saw many people. She was wearing a protective suit, still stained with blood, and everyone who saw her imdiately gave her a wide berth. Evelyn sprinted back to her apartnt building as fast as she could, the building administrator screaming curses behind her.

"Ronan! Ronan..."

Evelyn pounded on the door of 602. Just then, Chase Underwood from next door ca out. Seeing Evelyn, he was too excited to speak.

"Evelyn! What about Serena? Is she back too?"

"No, she’s still in the dical departnt."

Chase looked disappointed. Evelyn continued to pound on the door.

"Ronan!"

"I saw him leave about an hour ago."

Evelyn’s legs gave out, and she almost collapsed to the ground.

’What do I do? Ronan’s not here. Wendy ate the canned food, too. The cans have parasites, and the special dicine just lost its effectiveness. What about Wendy? How can I save her?’

Evelyn thought about herself. She had also eaten the canned food, but she felt fine.

’That’s right... my blood. I drank Ronan’s blood. Could my blood have healing properties now, too?’
